My family and I recently spent a week at the Meikles Hotel in Harare.
It's a big hotel with the hospitality more commonly found in small family owned establishments.
We had "Park View" rooms. They were average (and overpriced for the money), but the the view was quite calming. If you are watching pennies, skip these rooms and take the regular rooms. You can always take a walk outside to see the Park (which is unlit at night anyway).
This was not my first visit to the hotel and it is definitely a shadow of its former self. The service in the main restaurants was good, but occasionally the staff in the lounge dining area would forget to take orders.
Many of the items on the menu were not available as they had to be imported and there was simply no foreign currency available to import them.
The fuel shortage in the country is severe, so the location of the hotel makes it convenient to get around town on foot. The Eastgate shopping center nextdoor is mediocre at best. The better shopping centers like Arundel Village and Sam Levy's Village are in the suburbs and require a car to get to. If you can find gasoline, they are worth visiting.
