Hotel Salammbo is in the city centre of Tunis, NOT in the subburb of Salammbo. So be sure the taxi drive knows to take you to the city centre from the airport.
This hotel is mainly frequented by locals and is in great location just steps from the train station, medina, and Tunis' trendy shopping street.
We quite liked this hotel, enough to stay at it twice, although we found others that moved out after one night. Their complaint was cleanliness. I guess after travelling the world, our standards are probably a bit relaxed. When we first checked in, the cleaner's bucket and supplies were still in our room. When we asked if our room was actually ready, they just took out the supplies. We doubt they were done, but the room was in okay shape so we didn't mind. Our second room was clean and ready.
Both times we had a double en-suite room. The first room was normal hotel room sized. Our second one was huge and even had two decks. Price was the same, so guess we just lucked out the second time around.
The staff was always friendly and one of the desk clerk spoke some English which was helpfull (the rest spoke French and Arabic). The price included breakfast, which in Tunisia means coffee and bread with butter. The coffee was good, the bread fine.
The rooms came with TV, but no English-speaking channels. Really the best things about the hotel was its location, the fact that there was constant hot water, and you can book on-line.
We liked it well enought to stay twice!
