“Lovely hotel really worth a stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 16, 2011 via mobile

My husband and I stayed for a short weekend break in Tunis and I chose the majestic based on reviews here. It was lovely. A hotel that lives up to it's name and certainly in it's architecture. Clean, excellently priced, friendly and well situated to the capital. Breakfast was a buffet that had a better selection than some others we've stayed in. Give the boiled eggs a miss! Room service was superb and the seafood spaghetti was delicious. Room was large and well appointed. The bathroom was spotless and new. Only downside was the impatient room maid who seemed to hassle us out of our room in check out but then we did dally. Overall highly recommended!! Will definitely book again!

I have stayed at the wonderful Majestic for over 12 years and have come to regard it as a home from home. Sadly, last September it closed for major renovations which will take 2 years. Personally, I will miss its faded charm as it really was a one-off

Our initial impression of Tunis was marred by an unscrupulous, piratical taxi driver who basically held us hostage on the trip from the Tunis Airport to the Hotel Majestic. Fortunately, the hotel itself set us straight on this wonderful city!

The Hotel Majestic is an affordable base from which to see beautiful Tunis. Staying at the Majestic puts you within easy walking distance of many restaurants, bookstores, the medieval Arab bazaar and the commuter rail line out to ancient Carthage (site of the ultra-creepy Tophet, where the Phoenicians used to sacrifice their children to Baal) and Sidi Bou Said.

I wrote in my diary that the Hotel Majestic was "a run-down shadow of its former French glory... a weird, old-fashioned place with peeling paint everywhere and a general dusty malaise." Looking back on it since that first night of first impressions, we came to love the place and would highly recommend it.

We paid the equivalent of $35 (US) per night for our room. The room was huge -- the bathroom was almost as big and the wild aquamarine tile in it was a sight to behold. Toilet was modern, not Turkish. TV was all in French and Arabic. The room keys were delightfully ancient -- they were real keys, like skeleton keys, long and spindly. The room had an air conditioner that worked very, very well. The bed was extremely comfortable.

There is a little bit of a buffet breakfast in the hotel. The highlight of it was the stray cat that jumped into my wife's lap during breakfast, in search of attention. Stray cats are everywhere in most Mediterranean cities and Tunis is no exception. The locals regard cats as vermin.

The staff were very, very helpful, and arranged for us to get a car for our drive to Dougga (driving in Tunis is a nightmare; the less said about it the better). I got some real insight into the Tunisian character, which is far more westernized than that of most Arab countries, when I went to the hotel bar to watch France playing in the European Cup; all the locals at the bar were cheering for France, their former colonial overlord. No hard feelings evidently! "In Tunisia, we are all with France," the bartender told me.

For eats, we recommend La Petite Vague (address unknown but near the hotel; ring them at 71.255.081 and ask directions). As I recall it was not far from "la rue Martin Luther King." You can't leave Tunisia till you've tried mechouia "salad" (it isn't a salad, but that's what it's called) and harissa, a spicy tomato paste on bread, topped with canned tuna. It's really good. Wash it down with Boga, Tunisia's ripoff of Sprite. You can also try brik a l'oeuf (don't ask).
