“Perfect hotel for Tunis: best value, best location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 8, 2011

Stayed 3 nights and had 2 rooms (1 dbl; 1 trp) for my family. Both rooms were 2nd floor and with balconies facing onto Ave Bourghiba. Charming hotel, well run by very friendly staff. Bear in mind that this is an old building - so expect some less-than-impeccable decor/fixtures/furnishings/etc. The location is singularly the BEST place to stay in Tunis - there are other more expensive hotels on the same Avenue (eg The Hotel Africa 5* is directly opposite), but none are situated as perfectly as the Carlton. And the wifi is free and super-fast throughout the entire building and even extends to the street-side cafe. Highly, highly recommend this for the charm, location and balcony view.

Perfect location in the "City" close to the railway station, to the main Avenue, the Medina and main "Shopping Mall". Friendly personnel ready to help in any situation. Budget-price, considering the location. Free of Charge Wi-fi Connection (perfect for business)!
The hotel offers functional rooms but with no other services (no minibar, of bar in the hotel at all!).

Stayed for 3 nights -
bang on the Ave Bourguiba St, easy access to Medina market, lots of small cafes, restaurants.
Clean, warm, room but with a mini TV and unfortunately a leaky WC otherwise good value for money though a little on the higher side.
Excellent and cooperative staff - especially Mr Imet who does only night shifts and was always ready to help.
Only DRAWBACK - no restaurant for lunch/dinner, only breakfast which was quite adequate but somewhat mundane if you stay for more than 2 days. Business meetings have to do at the breakfast coffee tables as guests not allowed into room at all and no other place to meet.
Biggerst PLUS : Free WiFi in your room unlimited and surprisingly quite fast

The hotel is very well located, our room (double room with balcony) was rather small, the hotel's walls are rather thin so you can easily hear the noises from other rooms (children screeming, etc.). The downstairs coffee shop employees have a very bad habit of dragging the chairs and the tables when it is closing time. The hotel does have wireless which worked very well and was included in the room price, however the hotel did not have electricity adaptors; they have the European type of sockets so we could not use the laptop because of this (and we could not find any adaptors in the supermarket either). The breakfast was basic, not a lot of varieties, not much fruit, bad tea and the service (especially the employees) needs a lot of improving and attention to details.

The hotel has airport pick up and delivery service, that is of course chargeable but its location is perfect.

The Hotel Carlton is located opposite the 5 star Hotel "Africa" on Ave. Habib Bourgia. It is a good base to explore Tunis and the surroundings. On the Avenue you have lots of Cafes and an almost parisienne feeling. Excitingg the Hotel and turning right, you will reach the Medina (old town with basar) in 15 Minutes.

Turning right, you will reach the TGM (subway station) in 15 Minutes. From there you can take a ride to the archeoligical site of Carthago and the artis village sidi bou said. The main station is also within walking distance, from there you take trains to Sousse, Monastir and so on.

Rooms are basic but clean, service is friendly.

Though the hotel has clean rooms, some with nice views of the main street, I would not recommend it if you are traveling on business. The internet did not work for 5 days while I was there. The management was unapologetic, did not call anyone to repair it, would not give me a discount for my inconvenience. My final frustration was that their website said they took American Express. However, I had to nag them into dragging out the credit card machine so I could pay for my room.

I wrote this message to Carlton Hotel and wish to also submit it to Trip Advisor. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Carlton and would highly recommend the hotel for anyone visiting Tunis. Our rooms were very clean, comfortable and quiet. The location of the hotel is very convenient - a short walk to the medina and a bit longer walk to the train station where you can catch the train to La Marsa with stops at Carthage and Sidi Bou Said. Also, we appreciated being able to get the airport shuttle service from and to the airport. I specially want to mention the courtesy and friendliness of the front desk clerks who so willingly helped us with any requests for assistance - Sonia and Zahia. They are a definite asset to the Carlton. Many thanks for a most comfortable stay.
