“The heart of Matmata”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 6, 2014

The hotel was the best in Matmata, you can experience a Troglodite house, food was good. The staff was very nice and Matmata's location it's great to stay two nights if you are travelling without a group, to visit the Bere Bere Fortifications and Ksar Grihlane, in the Sahara Matmata it is also worth seeing, really special and unique

Stayed here as part of a tour. Hotel room was good. The buffet was not. Had dinner and breakfast here. Food that should have been hot was cold. Great views thought over the desert from the grounds though. Friendly staff.

This is an enormous hotel - presumably designed for large package groups which, when we stayed, simply weren't there. In fact, nobody was there apart from us. Most of the place was in darkness. It was like something out of The Shining. The troglodyte room was nice enough but the bathroom needed a good scrub. The swimming pool looked very nice but had no water in it. The evening buffet food was okay but resurfaced for breakfast the following day in a slightly luke warm manner. It was really depressing. We couldn't wait to leave. That said, when we stayed in 2012 Tunisia was going through a difficult period and tourists were pretty thin on the ground everywhere in the south. The hotel may have improved since but we recommend you shop around Matamata to see what is generally available (although beware the hotel touts on motorbikes).

We were in Tunisia for a 12-day trip. This hotel was our stop on our 5-day trip called "Le fond du désert". This hotel is builted like the gorfas in the south of Tunisia. We did sleep in a berber gorfa-style room, which was really exotic. The interior-court of the hotel are beautifull with all the flowers and the decorations. The terrace on the roof gives you a very nice view of the surrounding rock desert. We had a nice buffet-style dinner and breakfast next morning and the service was very good.

You HAVE to take a berber-style room to appreciate your stop there. Of course, it is not an hotel where you spend a complete week, since it is in the middle of nothing, but if you pass-by Matmata, the detour for one night worth it completely!

Will return there for sure!!

Room Tip: Choose a berber corner room with 2 separate rooms, really worth the price.

This hotel was very good, very clean and well maintain and probably the best hotel in Matmata. The food was good and have a nice variety. The staff are friendly, the berber room underground are amazing they are very cool in the summer without need for air conditioning. The bad thing is there are no entertainments!!! and the pool was closed.and The TV sucks and no channel were clear to watch !!!!

Room Tip: sleep only in the cave room because it is a amazing expereince

I loved this place. You sleep in a room dug out of the cliff. My favorite place we stayed in during out Tunisia trip.

Wouldn't have stayed here given the choice, but as many others have said there aren't many places to stay in the area.

The room would have been OK after a good clean.

The pool would also have been lovely after a good clean, but outside area very shabby and dirty and STANK of sewage which was visible in a big puddle. Not nice.

Food poor.

Upside? Interesting building. Amazing views at sunset/sundown.
