My family and I were on holiday over Christmas/New Year 2011-2012 and we made the marvelous decision to stay at the Singita property Sasakwa Hill Lodge (in connection with the Sabora Tented Camp, also fantastic).
I was really nervous about booking a trip to a place I had never been, through a travel agent in South Africa whom I had never seen, but I have to say that we were so well taken care of that I am only sad that the Singita brand only deals with safaris in Africa.
Every step of our trip was taken care of, from the moment we touched down in Kilimanjaro until the plane took off again at the end of a dream-come-true two weeks in Tanzania.
Sasakwa Lodge was the third hotel on our journey but it was the best one. It was comfortable, luxurious and gorgeous. And as nice as the Lodge was, it took second place to the location of the lodge itself, perched high above the Serengeti plain. Mesmerizing. It is the first thing visitors see as they walk through the breezeway to enjoy a drink with the lodge managers during the welcome briefing all guests receive upon arrival. The cottages are fabulous, exactly the right kind of decor for this exotic place. Little touches are not neglected, such as decanters of brandy and liqueurs for an evening nightcap. The beds are very comfortable, the claw-footed bathtubs are romantic, the plunge pool is heated and a good size.
Of course, all this is nothing without wonderful people working tirelessly to make for an even better stay, and Sasakwa Lodge had this too. Every person we came into contact with was kind, enthusiastic, and helpful. Everyone had extensive knowledge of the region, the animals, and country.
The guide we were blessed to have during this amazing trip was Adas, whose extensive knowledge of, well, just about anything having to do with flora and fauna was just a cherry on top of the safari sundae.
I know it isn't cheap, but do yourself a favor and go as soon as you can. This is too good to keep secret!
