“Inspirational site, but little to see”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 19, 2013

It gives you chills to be in one of the first spots inhabited by hominids 1.9 million years ago, and to be in a place of such an important scientific discovery. There's not a lot there, though -- a small visitor center with some brief info, plus an overlook into the Gorge. It's a nice spot to sit and eat lunch on your drive through the NCA on the way to the Serengeti, though.

“I'm Guessing it's a Let-Down if You're Not Into This Kind of Thing”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 15, 2013

Being an archaeology student, visiting Oldupai Gorge was absolutely wonderful. The brief talk was really informative, and it was so rewarding to go down to the place where zinjanthropus/australopithecus boisei was found... You can see hominid bones eroding out of the sediment. But you'll sink in knee-deep, which makes the jeep ride a lot less fun!

“Expensive but interesting”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 2, 2013 via mobile

You pay NY museum prices for a 2 room museum and a view into the gorge -- but it is probably still worth it because of the significance of the site. Listen to the lecture on the history of the site. It's interesting. This is worth stopping as a quick break between the S Serengeti and Ngorongoro crater as it is basically directly on the road. WHen I visited there were a lot of "Leopard Tour" vehicles but it was still pleasant.

“One should see where the first of our ancient ancesters were discovered”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 1, 2013

We had a lunch stop at the l,useum site overlooking the gorge. It was nice to each with a number of birds constanting begging for a handout or rumaging in the trash bin. A young staff member named Jasckson provided an overview of the geology of the gorge as well as taking us into the gorge to
see where the Leakey's made their discovery pf the nearly two million old remains of a person.
There is a mounent on the locatono as well as a small marker where the fossil was found. The museum which provides a visual timeline of the discoveries in the Gorge is worth a brief visit.

“Olduvai Museum”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed December 26, 2012

This is a small museum containing artifacts and a history of the active dig site. The 15 minute overview by a museum staff member was very informative. This will be much more interesting for those interested in archeology, anthropology and the history of mankind. If not, you may want to continue on to your next destination.
