“Nice location - top camp...”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 18, 2012

We stayed here two nights in May this year and we were all pretty much in awe of the camp - every aspect of it. It has great views of the Western Serengeti and a lot of wildlife abounds around the camp, making a short walk from your luxury tent to the lounge and dining tents an exciting one, especially after dark. One of the other guests had spotted a leopard ambling across a few feet from the camp parking area that very morning though we did not see it. One has to always be accompanied by the lodge staff ofcourse. We had already past the Migration on our way here but despite the lack of numbers we had an exceptional stay. Once again we heard a lion call but we couldnt locate it though we did follow its spoor the next morning. The sunsets were amazing. Even though the service was trademark Serena, I would add that the service at Kirawira is a notch higher - the staff seem to have that much extra time on their hands despite their workloads. The dining staff were especially good with kids and elders alike.

Room Tip: All tents have Serengeti views and they are luxury tents with a wooden look but with modern fittings...

We arrived in mid-June, and while we missed the migration, we were very happy with our stay at Kirawira. Kirawira is set a bit above the plains and offers beautiful views. The staff was very attentive and sweet, the food was delicious and the furnishings were very comfortable. I would highly recommend a stay at this camp.
Game viewing in the surrounding area was good even though the grasses were high. We saw many elephant herds, giraffe, crocodile, lion and the usual gazelle, impala, etc.

Fabulous!

We were a group traveling through Tanzania and Kenya and found this accommodation to be one of the best. Our group was upgraded to Kirawira so obviouslyu found it value for money. Found champagne on arrival nice touch and the dining experience with a choice of many courses much better e next morning. than buffet style of others especially the silver service. Coffee and muffin brought to tent before breakfast a nice touch. Surprised to find a " kill" less than 100m from site next morning. Our group still takes about this spot.

Our stay at this lodge was part of a trip to East Africa. We found the food quality and general service to be only average. The individual lodges were quite nice with comfortable beds and indoor plumbing that mostly worked. However, the food, especially dinner was overcooked almost every night, especially fish options. The staff was people were pleasant but often not available in the middle of the day for guests.

Exactly as you would imagine from the description. Views over the escarpment are fantastic, a great pool if you have time, and the "tenting" experience with all the bells & no downside. The staff & food were excellent; we just needed more time to enjoy the luxury on our first night on safari. Great wildlife in the vicinity. The best of the lodges we stayed in during the week. Wake up to the morning corus at dawn - only on safari would this be acceptable!

Kirawira in the Western Serengeti was one of several Serena lodges I stayed at on a recent trip. Based on reviews I had read, I was expecting this property to be outstanding. Although the tent (Kanga #9) was certainly on the luxury end, with comfortable beds and a very nice bathroom (including a toilet area with a privacy door), I was somewhat disappointed that the food served was basically like all the other Serena properties. The food was good, but I guess for what they charge for this tented camp, I was expecting the food to be more upscale. The meals however, were all served, no buffets. The best part of the meal were the entertaining genet cats that visited the dining tent at dinner time. The pool was refreshing and clean. Hot water for showers was plentiful. Note, that if you are having laundry done at this location, it is about triple the cost of the other Serena properties on the Northern Circuit. I also stayed at Mbuzi Mawe tented camp in the Serengeti and enjoyed this Serena property more (including the significantly lower price).

Room Tip: Had heard tents 7-9 had the best view. I was in #9 which had a nice view, with just a few trees.

Our tour operator, Ketas Safaris (they are based in Kenya and specialize in East African tours) arranged for an upgrade to the Serena Kirawira Lodge. I was at first a bit reluctant, having 2 kids under 3 and the hotel's website stated they do sit down meals with silver and the whole lot (any parent's nightmare). Have no fear - this was one of the best safari experiences we've had to date. Everything at the lodge was perfect, from the amazing view, to the wonderful staff who took turns to entertain our kids while we had our meals. The food was amazing, given their remote location I can only but salute them. The chef took pains to prepare meals for my 8 month old daughter. The birdlife at Kirawira was fantastic, you can just sit back, relax and listen all day long. Thank you Ketas and thank you Serena for an unforgettable experience - we hope to be back soon!
