“This is glamping at its best!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 2, 2011

This property is meticulously maintained. The rooms were large, clean and comfortable. The food service was excellent -- especially considering you are in the middle of the Serengeti. The staff was very friendly, knowledgeable and went out of their way to make you happy.

The game around the property was abundant! It was heaven falling asleep each night to the sounds of the rowdy neighbors... lions, hyenas and a few ellies.

We stayed here 3 nights at the end of our 2 week safari in Kenya and Tanzania. All the staff were friendly, helpful and professional. The tents were luxurious, with hardwood floors and granite in the bathroom. We opted for dawn and dusk game drives, leaving for the morning drive 30 minutes before sunrise and arriving back at camp 30 minutes after sunset on the afternoon drive. After breakfast and after lunch we sat on the porch and were mesmerized by the vastness of the Serengeti and its spectacular wildlife. The meals were excellent as was the service. The restaurant staff went out of their way to teach us some basic Swahili. We saw just about all the animals, including a 15-foot rock python.

Great place to be. The luxury tents are amazing with the bathrooms most good hotels would aspire to have. The atmosphere makes you feel like a privileged explorer just assigned by her Majesty's geographical society to the task of findings that enigmatic source of Nile. The food was very good and served with the true attention to the detail. You can start your day by having a cup of tea or coffee on the porch of your tent while watching the game all around you.The service is high class. Safari opportunities great. An unforgettable place we already want to go back to.

Room Tip: Seems to me you cannot go wrong with any of the luxurious tents.

Kirawira sits atop a hill south of the Grumeti River in the Western Serengeti. Game is always active here, and we saw dik-dik, impala, giraffe, warthogs and many birds from the deck of our tent. We also heard lions at night to make the safari experience complete. The tents are very comfortable, with hot water and electrical outlets. Paths from the tent to the restaurant and reception area are well maintained and lighted. Finally, the staff and meals are absolutely wonderful. The staff is eager to please and help you. The Edwardian style reception area is fantastic and has many pristine antiques. If you're going to the Serengeti, spend a few nights here and you won't regret it. It's about 30 minutes from an airstrip.

From welcome to departure we had a great experience. The tents are very nice with good showers. The restaurant is good. The setting is beautiful. The service is excellent. We had the misfortune to be in a vehicle accident and while our guide was away for a day getting the vehicle repaired the assistant manager, Ellietta, took good care of us. He made sure we had beverages and provided us with lunch while we waited in the reception area. He contacted our guide for updates on his arrival time and even offered his personal tent should we need to stay for an extra day (all tents were booked). His hospitality was over-the top. We will definitely stay here again.

Sue and I arrived at Grumeti air strip on September the 4th, and was welcomed by our guide for our four days, by KITOY NDOSSY the number one guide in East Africa. On the way to the camp we saw our first glimpse of what was to come. The camp was more than we expected, the staff from Mr Ellietta Mbisse, our friend Emmanuell, hope your wife Agnes is well, and little Eric. to Catherine our house keeper who always made our tent look so nice, and to Jane in the shop with her beaming smile, and Frank in the restaraunt, and so many of the staff who made our visit so special. A BIG BIG thank you for the cakes and the songs made my birthday even more special. The service was above first class, the food just wonderful, in facr everything about Kirawira for us was out of the world. The views over the Serengeti amasing, and to think we had our own lion pride walking around our camp, once while we were on a game drive, they came up to the dining tent, they must have heard of the superb menus. And Kitoy made sure before we had an even closer look at the pride on Wednesday evening, never thought we would be so close to such magnificent animals. Our four days at the camp have been some of the most special Sue and i have experienced. We saw all the animals that we could wish for, from a rare sighting of Serval, well done Sue!! to watching a pride of lions surround a nile crocodile, poor thing didnt stand a chance. To seeing the elephants stripping a tree bare, we even had to get out to push the jeep as the battery went flat, in the middle of nowhere, now that was fun. Breakfast sitting over the Grumeti river watching the thirty or more hippos playing was very special, but to sit on the serengeti plain drinking wine with Kitoy as the sun set was probably our most treasured moment. If you want a real african experience, in the most wonderful of settings, and with staff who make you feel like family this is for you. To all at Kirawira, lots of love and thank you, Rod and sUE

Room Tip: tENT ELEVEN WAS LOVELY, THE "simba" tent as its known. lovely view

We (four adults) stayed at Kirawira for two nights at the end of a two week safari – and as with most properties we were greeted with the complimentary hot towel and fruit drink. We had started out our Safari in another Tented Camp in Kenya, and loved it. Kirawira though, was just that much better, and that is saying a lot since the other property was fabulous.

Now as to the “Tent”. Each tent is raised up on a platform overlooking the Serengeti and has a large balcony. Hardwood floors, marble and granite bathroom, large walk-in shower, king size canopy bed, teak furniture, telephone, electric plugs and lights everywhere – in other words you have canvas walls, but saying it is a tent is stretching it. You still have that feeling – but your “tent” rivals any high end hotel room you have ever stayed in. Turn down service is standard, including a complete refresh of the room each evening. Bugs were pretty much non-existent and we never saw a mosquito. We stayed in August and the temperature was around 30 in the day and 15 at night.

Now for the service. Somewhere in our research of where to stay, I had come across either a review or a comment that Kirawira was like stepping back in time to the 1930’s. Whoever coined that phrase got it right. All staff are in formal attire, anticipate your every wish, and no detail is left unattended – no matter how small. Something as minor as your wakeup call – is a personal visit to your tent with your favorite morning beverage and a muffin, this to tide you over on your morning safari until you return for breakfast.

Food was great for all the meals – breakfast (including complimentary champagne), lunch and dinner. Lots of variety, great soups, salads and main courses. This again is where their service comes in – each meal served with flair and very, very, personal service.

Both the lounge and the two tents that serve as restaurants, are just that, tents. But again though – they are very well appointed with hardwood floors, high end furniture, linen and silk draped roofs. All overlook the Serengeti and you get fabulous sunsets from the deck out front.

Although pools at most of the African properties are just pools, the pool area at Kirawira makes it a resort. Water trickles down a rock lined stream from above, into a small pool, and then from that into the main pool. There are lots of places to either sit in the sun, or relax in the shade. From the pool you can see animals, although to see a lot you do require binoculars.

For those reviewers that said following the Migration – there are no animals, either had a bad day, went out in the heat of the day when the animals were staying out of the sun, or didn’t have a competent guide. This part of the Serengeti is full of things to see even after the Migration. Zebras, Gazelles, Impalas, Warthogs, Buffalo and Hartebeests were all present, and therefore so were the predators. On game drives we saw a pride of lions, including two lioness up in a tree, a cheetah, tons of giraffes, crocodiles, and a small family of elephants. Plus you have hippos pretty much everywhere. Within a couple of hours drive we saw a leopard with a fresh kill 30 feet up a tree, her cub in another, a large family of elephants (over 30), and one of the biggest elephants we saw in Africa. To be fair, in some parks you come upon more animals, more often.

Whatever you decide to do – remember to tip those who make your holiday special. A couple of bucks to your waiter, porter or guide are appreciated along with a few Asante's (thank-you's).

We stayed at Serena properties throughout our two weeks. They all do a great job with their service and the food is good. Each property provides bottled water in the rooms.

We thoroughly enjoyed our two night stay at Kirawira.
