“Amazing location, fantastic hospitality and beautiful food!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 22, 2010

We've just returned from Lemala Luxury Tented Camp in the northern Serengeti, Tanzania. It;s a seasonal camp located next to the Mara River where we watched the annual migration of wildebeest. It was a fantastic spectacle and the camp was the crowning glory of the experience. The tents were luxurious with lovely hot showers - the best we had on our safari! The staff were fantastic - very welcoming and and nothing was too much trouble for them, even preparing different food for our kids. How the chef prepared such beautiful food in the middle of nowhere I don't know. We would highly recommend this wonderful camp!

What a beautiful area of the Serengeti: a stone's throw from the Mara River and view of distant escarpment, with gentle hills and nooks to explore and observe wildlife. Sundowners on the river are a must. We had the area completely to ourselves in early June, which was a treat. The staff are excellent--friendly, efficient, and relaxed--and the tented rooms comfortable and well kitted out.

I stayed here for two nights in August and it was a wonderful experience. Plenty of wildlife, regular crossings of the wildebeasts over the Mara river, good food and a very knowledgable guide. A much better choice than nearby Olikira Camp, which I spent one night at and it was dreadful.

Fabulous tent site in the northern Serengeti; it's a bit off the beaten track and takes ages to get to by road but there are flights to a nearby airstrip. Showers are out of a packet, so you have to inform an assistant when you want to take a shower, as he'll fill it up with warm water. Animals (wildebeest, zebra etc) wander right past your tent during the night, and a ranger escorts you to the dining tent and back. Staff are hospitable and friendly.

This is a semi-permanent tented camp, and it was located close to the Mara River in July. We chose it because we wanted to be nearby the Great Migration at this time of the year. Among the five lodges/tented camps that we stayed, Lemala Mara was the best, followed by the Ngorongoro Serena.

The main advantage is the remote location. If you have a driver-guide who is good at spotting animals, there will be fewer vehicles fighting to get the best viewing angle. Driving off the official tracks seemed to be slightly less observed.

There are only eight tents, and meals are served in a communal table. This allowed us to know other guests and share different experiences. Before dinner, guests spend time in the ´bush TV´, actually a bonfire near the main tent. Most of the beverage and drinks are complimentary.

The tents are very confortable and the staff carries the hot water to your tent when you are ready to take a shower.

There is an overall rustic and adventurous feeling, but combined with very confortable accomodations and helpful and friendly staff.

We decided to drive to Northern Serengeti instead of flying to the airstrip. This decision brought advantages and disadvantages. On one hand, we made our return trip to Central Serengeti using a road outside the park, bordering its west side. This enriched our journey as we were able to see the country side villages and people that were very different from what we saw in Arusha, Dar Es Salam or Zanzibar. On the other hand, the trip from Central Serengeti to Lemala Mara inside the park was long and boring, and we crossed some woodland infested by tse-tse flies (which entertained the kids as they tried to kill the insects inside the car).

The three-course dinner menu is fixed, so you run the risk of having to eat something that you dislike. However, the food was always delicious and neither us or the other guests had any problem with it.

They do complimentary laundry for three pieces of clothing. Unfortunately they forgot our basket and we had to leave the camp with some clothes still wet. Nothing that lowers our high appreciation of our stay.
