We stayed at Boulders Lodge two years ago and made a promise to ourselves that we had to get back to Africa as soon as we could to stay at another Singita property (although if Singita's were in Fallujah, we were going to Fallujah. If they were on the planet Mars, then we were going to the planet Mars. You probably get the point). Well good things come to those who wait and we are happy to report we made good on that promise this past month by visiting Tanzania and staying at both Faru Faru Lodge and Sabora Tented Camp. Simply put, Singita gets it right, in all aspects.
In many ways Faru Faru reminded me of Boulders. Both places have a more contemporary, or modern feeling to them, compared with some of the other Singita properties. Both places make great use of rocks and stones for design. Both feature fantastic food, amazing service, wonderful locations and awesome game viewing.
The rooms at Faru Faru are very comfortable and spacious. The views are amazing, with wall to wall windows. You can sit in your room if you wish, never leave, and probably be content as you can watch all sorts of game stroll down to the watering hole or the river to get a drink. The mini bar is stocked. We didn't see a bug in our room the entire time, which we know matters to some people, even though we were in the middle of the bush and naturally one should expect some bugs. The only minor improvement would be to add an indoor shower. There is a lovely outdoor shower, and a nice bathtub inside, but I recall Boulders having an indoor shower in addition to the outdoor shower, which is nice.
The food was terrific the entire time. There is a great breakfast buffet laid out each morning, and you can also order just about anything you want from the kitchen. Lunches and dinners were creative and delicious. The wines were always free flowing.
There is also a spa and a gym onsite. The gym is pretty bare bones but you can definitely get a decent workout in if you so desire, to combat all the food you are stuffing into your face (seriously, dessert with lunch every day is something I could get used to).
The guides and game viewing are pretty spectacular. Highlights were watching and following Lion hunting zebra and hunting various antelope species one day. At one point, 2 lionesses and 2 male lions walked right beside our parked LandCruiser, so close I could literally just about reach out and touch them had I been foolish enough to try that. That experience got my blood pumping!
We have to give a special mention to two people, our guide Eugen and our waiter Peter. You guys were amazing. Eugen we look forward to future game drives with you. Your knowledge, passion and excitement for what you do is contagious. While everybody at Faru Faru is wonderful, we think these two guys are enormous assets for the company and property and are prime examples for why Singita has an approximately 99.9% 5 star ratings on this site (and part of the reason why Singita Grumeti Reserves received Travel and Leisure's #1 hotel/resort ranking in the world recently)
PS - we also visited Sasakwa, the third (and most pricey) Singita lodge in Tanzania. We were blown away by it and greatly look forward to staying there in the future.
