During 2013 I stayed at the Serena Hotel for a total of 4 months on business for 3-6 weeks at a time throughout the year.

It is a fantastic hotel with very high standards, quality of rooms, service and food and I would recommend it to anyone who has the budget for it. Security at the hotel is high so you always feel safe but to be honest the Dar Es Salaam business district is safe place anyways and I had no problem being out on the streets later at night - but this is obviously not for everyone and it's great to know the hotel ensure that only guests and visitors are able to get in.

Staff were attentive and friendly, and did everything they could to make me feel at home while I was there.

The rooms are excellent quality with comfortable beds and great views over the golf course and sea on one side and the business district on the other. Each room has a large desk and a nice quality bathroom as well. Plenty of cupboard space as well and a good safe for personal belongings.

The hotel is centrally located and only 10 mins walk away from the Ferry port to Zanzibar - it's a great place to be based for going out for food at lunchtime and dinnertime (if you want a change from the in hotel food). It is also not far from other parts of Dar Es Salaam by taxi such as the (negotiate with the taxi drivers just outside the boundaries of the hotel - the Eurocar taxis the hotel provides are better cars, but very expensive) when you want to explore.

The hotel is also close to a Woolworths clothing shop and a 'mini-mall' with food, coffee, etc outlets as well. There is an ATM machine just across the road for cash and within the hotel there is a Bureau de Change (however the rates are not competitive here - go to the one which is in PPF Towers - it's 5 mins walk from the hotel)).

Food at the hotel was excellent - breakfast was fresh and a very wide variety of foods catering to all tastes. Lunch was good also although I only had lunch here a couple of times (I would suggest going to local food places for much cheaper and incredibly tasty food!). Dinner at the hotel was very good and I must recommend the Jahazi restaurant - incredibly fresh fish and lobsters, and the chef always made sure she met every guest which is a great touch. The hotel prices were predictably more than you could get at local places - but that's obviously a choice that each person makes for themselves. Room service was good also and prompt.

The Gym was clean and tidy and had nice new modern kit in it, and the staff were able to help you when needed. You could even arrange for a Personal Trainer! (Although I didnt!).

The Pool area is fantastic - it was amazing to be able to come back from work and spend an hour or two by the pool while the light was good. At the weekends when I wasn't out exploring it was a brilliant place to while away some hours with the pool bar and lounger service.

The cost of the hotel was approx $175-$195 dollars per night, so it is not the cheapest option but you do get your monies worth. If you are staying business - then this hotel should be your first choice, and if you are on a luxury holiday then likewise!

I would have no hesitation in recommending Serena in Dar Es Salaam!

Room Tip: Ask for a sea view room! Use the Bureau de Change in PPF Towers for competitive rates The hote...

There is high security at the entrance which is outsourced. However, most of the security staff did not seem to understand any international languages hence could not converse with the guests/visitors but resorted to using body language as a means of communication (might be misconstrued as rudeness). I was accommodated on the 7th floor and the usage of the elevator required inserting the room key card (imagine the scenario of a packed lift with different persons going to different floors!). The hotel has been rebranded different times; .......Sheraton, Movenpick, Serena etc but that has not translated in also the physical infrastructure overhaul and improvements such as the old fashioned combo of bathtub and shower. The room was clean and the bed was comfortable. The Serengeti restaurant and adjoining bar are ok but could do better with both ambience and service.

I stayed at this hotel because of it's close proximity to the stock exchange. The rooms are spotless, the staff are very friendly and helpful. Perhaps the check in process could be slightly streamlined but overall a great hotel.

It is a centrally located hotel in Dar es Salaam. The staff is warm and cooperative. They have a nice spread of breakfast buffet (overlooking the garden). Lobby is very comfortable for business meetings and has good WiFi access. Rooms are decent and overlook the front road, back road (which should be avoided) and the garden-cum-pool area. They also have complementary shoe shining service - and there is a unique chair at the hotel entrance if you have some extra time ahead of your meeting to enjoy the service. Overall a nice place to stay.

However, a few negatives to highlight:
(a) house keeping is not efficient you need to call them a few times to get what you need - e.g. I had to call them thrice to get drinking water while struggling with a soar throat;
(b) No shaving or brush kit or nail cutter offered in the room; and
(c) internet connectivity in certain areas of the room is poor.

From a pricing perspective (which is comparable to taj exotica), I find it expensive, but so are other things in Tanzania.

I stayed there for 3 nights in a business trip. The superior rooms are excellent, specious and very well equipped. The free Wi-Fi is good and fast. Service is implacable friendly and very helpful. The restaurants are good and the lobby and the terrace near the bar are very convenient for meetings. The location of the hotel is convenient if one has meetings in the business center of Dar. Indeed Recommended.
