“best value”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 20, 2012

Best value for money in Dar. Don't miss out on trying some of the stakes that come on a stone plate sizzling hot. Nice breeze on the rooftop ads up to the entire atmosphere.

“rooftop review”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 12, 2012

the dowtown part of Dar Es Salaam, is full of restaurants that serve local food, indian and chinese. the Red Onion is a rooftop restaurant that features indian food and is one of the better options in the city. the food in not spectacular, but is good and good value for money. Sharing the rooftop with friends can be a very pleasant way to spend an evening. We all ate different dishes and they were all quite good and served in reasonable time......although the ambience of the restaurant is somewhat lacking, ie metal chairs and the tables do not match....the overall impression is that we would go back for more.

“Great Food”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 13, 2012

I have to say that the food at the Red Onion is fantastic!
After walking around Dar-Es-Salaam for days looking for somewhere other than the new Africa Hotel, to eat , we found the Red Onion and what a surprise we had.
There was Live Music, cheap but pleasantly good beer and the service was pretty good.
We spent the equivalent of £30 (GBR) and got top food.
I recommend the Butter chicken and Peshwari Nan bread.

“Tasty stuff downtown”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 31, 2012

Red Onion has the benefit of being a relaxed outdoor restaurant in the centre of town. (It's on the 2nd floor mezzanine terrace of the posh highrise behind the petrol station opposite Posta.) If you've just spent a few hours watching out for potholes and walking around in the crowds of the city centre, it's brilliant to get out on that terrace and see it all from above... with a cold beer and a tasty curry. Watching the sun go down you can feel pretty exotic/urban as you contemplate the selection of Dar highrises and the balconies of the neighbours, birds wheeling around.
They serve various type of food but I normally order Indian. Their aloo paratha is the tastiest I've tried in Dar. There's also an ice cream/juice bar next door and a coffee bar that you can order from. The service has always been friendly and professional.
As a bonus it's at the Eastern end of Kisutu Street (apologies to those who prefer its long Indian name) wich features lots of Hindu temples, interesting shops and good lunch places (such as Bhog 56, highly recommended too.)
