“Clean, good location & large rooms”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 24, 2012

We stayed at Tanzanite Executive Suites for a total of three nights across two different stays. The area is in the Muslim Quarter of Dar-Es-Salaam and is only a short taxi journey to the ferry terminal (for access to Zanzibar - 10,000 TSH) and the airport (20,000 TSH).

There is an excellent street restaurant called Mamboz which specialises in grilled chicken (6,000 TSH) only a five minute walk away. We ate here each night during our stay and didn't suffer any ill effects. The hotel has a restaurant area of sorts which is only used for serving breakfast. No other meals are served. The breakfast itself was a buffet style with ceral, toast, sausages, eggs, waffles etc. etc. - it was of a good quality.

Overall, the rooms are a great quality for Tanzania. The air-conditioning worked flawlessly (needed in the Dar heat!) and the showers were hot and powerful - rare in Tanzania! I'd advise staying on as high a floor is possible due to some street noise during the mornings. We felt safe walking around the neighbourood during daylight hours and made regular trips back and forward to the local supermarket. At night, the streets aren't particularly well-lit so I'd advise sticking to the main roads and not wandering down any side streets.

The wifi in the hotel worked most of the time during the stay but isnt' a great speed - don't rely on it for anything other than casual web-browsing.

The hotel staff are very attentive and will be glad to help you with any queries about your time in Dar-Es-Salaam. Overall, we enjoyed our stay here.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on a high floor to minimise noise from the street.

We spent a night here at the end of our trip. The property is a 5 minute walk from the ferry port and only 20 mins taxi ride from the airport (although we did go in non-rush hour).

The rooms are spacious, clean and comfortable and the staff are hugely helpful and very friendly. No food on site, but there are microwaves and fridges in the rooms and there's a choice of food delivery options if you don't fancy eating out.

Rooms on the upper floors have great views across the city. Although going out on the balcony is a bit scary!!

We got a 2 bedroom suite, which had 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. We had 3 to our party, and this was one of the few places close to the ZNZ ferry where it was apparent that it would sleep 3 people. The bathrooms and bedrooms were beautiful, and it was great having a kitchen and living room. Each room had an AC unit and an electronic mosquito killer.

Staff didn't have too much information available for this year's ferry schedule. Some were more efficient than others.

Breakfast was okay but well-run.

There is no hotel restaurant, but they provide a binder full of take-out menus. Our food was not good, but we perhaps just made a bad choice. There were a lot more restaurants to choose from.

Good value and good location if you want to be close to the ferry! It's a 5-10 min walk.

The staff was very friendly and helpful. We arrived at 3 o'clock in the morning and our booking was only for tomorrow. The manager placed us for the rest of the night in a giant family suite. With no additional charge! The location is not fancy, but it's a minute walk from all local businesses, very helpful for transfers. No dinner offered, but you can order from restaurant menu. Room service is quick.

Stayed on a brief visit to Dar with a colleague. The property is located in a noisy area of Dar oldtown - mosques and car alarms entertaining you throughout the night. Overall the place had a grim feeling to it, warnings about their restrictive policy on alcohol and guests all over.
TV channels were poor quality.
Next time I'd rather stay at a proper hotel for that kind of cash.
No idea how this place can be rated #3 in Dar. Not justified.

We stayed at the Tanzanite Suits for 3 nights in July and August this year. The place is value for money. We stayed in a 2 bedroom suite. The rooms are reasonably sized and clean. The staff is extremely helpful. The location however a bit of a disappointment with little to offer specially in the evenings. The surrounding area starts closing down at 5 and is completely deserted by 6. The streets nearby are run down and not lit giving a feeling of insecurity. While staying here one should be prepared to use the taxis. These are easily available but are not metered so be prepared to haggle. There is no in house restaurant so food is to be ordered in. This also is not a problem as the hotel carries a menu. Orders can be placed with the reception and the food is delivered to the room. Further, there are plenty of reasonably priced eateries close by, noting fancy but decent.

we spent one night at the tanzanite executive suite before getting the ferry to Zanzibar early the next day.

communication beforehand was excellent so our late arrival was not an issue. Our room was upgraded because we mentioned it was our honeymoon. The facilities were excellent, the staff were friendly and helpful and even drove us to the ferryport in the morning and helped us to get our ticket to Zanzibar. We would recommend this for anyone visiting Dar es Salaam.
