“Great place for Brithdays”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 3, 2013

We always come to the Spur for a birthday celebration- they do such a nice job at making you feel special with the singing and dancing- and the beef is really good there, too!

“Fancy lumps of meat”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed December 26, 2012

In a Boston minute, the steaks here are basically all generic meat with different sauces or in other words:

Spurs as almost everyone knows is a steak house franchise out of South Africa. As almost everyone also knows franchises don't exactly have a great equilibrium in this part of the world. The customer service is outstanding and the reason why I gave this review a 3 star. The waiters are enthusiastic, keen to help and unlike other restaurants in Dar actually look happy to do some work.

The ambiance is standard Spur (cow seats, children's play area, etc..). So far so good? Just wait till you hear your first "Happy Birthday" song (whereby extremely loud speakers play an annoying tune in which all the waiters drop whatever it is that they are doing and in a ritual like manner yell in gibberish). This same ritual tends to be repeated 3-4 times in a span of 90 minutes. Bear in mind you're in Dar, where the average diner has micronesian social skills. Hence, they tend to repeat this same birthday song with the same lyrics along with the same gibberish over, over, and over...and over.

If you've managed to hold it together without the migraine of the birthday song and have the remaining energy to hold your steak knife, your steak is served. Fries look great, the onion rings look a little odd but edible nonetheless and my Manhattan Strip Sirlion looks absolutely delicious.

But wait, something doesn't seem right here, a Sirlion is supposed to have some fat. This is nothing but layers and chunks of just meat on a sauce. It also tastes remarkably similar to the Cheddamelt rump which happens to be similar to the Slimmer. And that's Spurs in Dar.

Whether its a rump, sirloin, filet or even the chicken Schintzel, its all just filet of meat on different sauces. Once you've had it once, you've had the whole menu. On a side note, the burgers aren't that bad and the Salad bar is usually fresh. Its just a shame that a restaurant that prides itself on Steak serves just lumps of the same meat with sauces.

Go there once, order the 200 Sirloin or the 500 T-Bone: You've just had the same chunk of meat with different thickness.

“Steak and Ribs!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 18, 2012

Great steaks as always from the South African steak house franchise. The waiters are quite jolly and always ready to help. Kids play area is clean and there is always someone there minding the little ones so you dont have to worry. It's an open kitchen so if you do sit close to the kitchen on a busy night it does get quite noisy. Steaks are cooked quite well and the do try to get your specification right. Smoking section near the door ensures that non smokers are not bothered by the smoke and tobbacco smells. If theres someone celebrating their birthday the waiters all sing for you and give you a complimentary dessert. And every few hours the waiters do a sort of entertaining dance routine that customers may jion in if htey want to or know the moves. All in all a nice place to go.

“Just like Home ( for SA'ners )”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 1, 2012

Again a Spur is a Spur. Same set-up, same menu but now with Kilimanjaro beer. Well situated in Sea Cliff Village with ATM, Mini-Market and play center. I you are overwhelmed by Indian/Coastal menus this is a great break specifically for South Africans. Salad Valley is good value but a medium spread. Regular Combo Specials for Carnivores and Seafood Lovers. The service is typically "Karibu" excellent. Smoking area and Sport's Flat Screens.
