“Good Service, Can do better!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 16, 2013

I was in JB Belmont Hotel in November 2012 and what do I say, one this a great investment and having been in other establishments of this magnitude, JB can do much better. A few improvements are required here and there.
I enjoyed the service and the staff are fairly friendly, though a lot needs to be done in terms of on job training to boost their morale even high. The location is great for a business person since it is easily accessible.
The rooms are big enough and the food was great. I look forward to visiting this hotel again.
You can do even better.

Wow, where do I start? I stayed at JB Belmont for a week in Dec 2012. Never again! Don't get me wrong, if you only need a place to spend the night in DAR, why not, but don't stay here for more than one night.
- The hotel in in the middle of city center. Don't expect to be able to do anything else than sleeping. Restaurant and bar are really dark and boring. The food is below average (i'm difficult when it comes to food), no outdoor area. There is only ONE lift in for this hotel of 20 floors and it is used at all times by the personnel. It might seem like a small detail but it can take you up to 10-15min to get from reception to your room.
- The rooms are fairly big. My room had a terrible "public toilet smell" but maybe I was unlucky. TV and Internet are working most of the time but that's it. 3 TV channels and very slow internet. Not suitable for a business man/woman. Like many places in Africa there are frequent power cuts, but unlike other hotels, JB Belmont don't find it necessary to use a generator so you end up in complete darkness in your rooms.
- Service is terrible, asking them to make the room is like speaking to a brick wall. Room service is supposed to take 30min, in maybe 6 times I used it I never got my food in less than an hour and most of the time it was not was I ordered. I asked them to add an egg to my sandwitch and they called back 20min later to tell me it was not possible (!). They also charges you a hidden fee of 3000 shilling for room service.

Like previous reviewers there were some things that were good. The staff are friendly and do their best to help went asked. Also the rooms are a good size. However the hotel is pretty shabby. A number of things are broken and haven't been repaired and generally the place needs a re-vamp and in some places a more thorough clean. If you're staying for business then it's a convenient location and will meet most of your needs. But if you're on holiday then they're much better options for the money being charged.

After spending a couple of weeks in Zanzibar, on our last night before flying home we stayed at this hotel. The staff was very friendly to us and we felt very welcomed. Our room was incredibly spacious and very well made. We had dinner in the restaurant and my friend and I agreed that the mashed potatoes and vegetables were amazing! The hotel staff picked us up from the ferry port and also took as to the airport at 4:30 am because we had an early flight. This hotel has a lot of offer and we only wish that we were able to spend more nights there.

I would definitely recommend this hotel for those who visit Dar es Salaam!

Stayed 8 nights at this establishment and had a mixed bag of service quality ranging from very poor to exceptionally excellent. The listing states that this hotel has 2 restaurants, but upon arrival only 1 of the 2 was ever open. The one that was open had a very nice menu, but 80% of the time you could not order off of the menu unless you did so for room service. The rest of the time it was set up as a buffet in which the offerings hardly ever changed from day to day and night to night. The staff in the restaurant was excellent with quality service, friendly and very helpful!!! The hotel as a whole was very clean and well maintained. The lobby staff was very helpful for the most part, depending upon the individual you were dealing with. Check out was questionable...accepting a credit card was iffy...their authorization machines were broken, not working or had no connection. They could not check-in new guests using credit cards, nor could they accept credit cards for those checking out...so they stated. Persistence paid off by demanding they at least try to use the machines for authorization....and it worked!!!

All in all this was a nice place to stay and I will stay again knowing what to expect and what not to expect. The good out weighed the bad and only another stay will determine whether or not there will be a 3rd stay.

Room Tip: You can negotiate price for an upgraded (deluxe) room very easily with a long stay.

I battled to settle on a rating so I guess a 1.5 just about sums it up. There are a number of good things about the hotel - some of the staff were friendly, the rooms are large and no problems with cleanliness and free wi-fi, but then the problems start. The staff in many cases are simply very poor at their jobs and it seems that service is an annoyance that they would rather do without. It starts with the front desk with the receptionist slumped in a chair who barely grunts at you and then the dining staff are simply hopeless - I waited 15 mins for milk with my cereal...I spoke to the head waiter and 3 waitresses, and eventually had to leave without getting milk (the problem is that there is no milk at the breakfast buffet, and HAS to be ordered).
Getting to the rooms proved to be a wait as the single lift ,whilst very efficient, does not have the capacity to deal with the hotel volume. As mentioned, the rooms are large and have everything you need. The beds are diabolically hard and I regularly woke up in the morning with backache. The first morning I had no hot water - and then it transpired that they had forgotten to tell me that each room has its own heater and you have to turn it on the night before. The shower was clean but in need of the most basic maintenance - half the nozzles on the shower head were blocked, and the door seal was hanging off, leaving a huge gap. The hotel used to be called the Paradise City hotel, evidenced on the almost threadbare towels and the odd toiletries that were provided. The hotel is located right in the middle of town, with an informal market across the road and the noise from at least 5:30am does ensure that sleeping in is not an option! There is no fitness centre.
The food was OK but I have to say that I was with a group of about 30 people for a conference, and about 7 people came down with stomach problems.
With a bit of effort, this hotel could be so much better - should I return on another business trip I would definitely try somewhere else.

Each room is a small apartment making them quite spacious. Major issues are the lack of a room safe, the flooding bathroom and the single elevator. If you spend a few days here then the buffet dinner became quite repetitive.
