“Don't expect too much”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 27, 2011

For around $15-$20 getting your own room seemed to be decent value for money. Rooms were not that clean, views were non-existent. However location was quite good, especially if you've missed the ferry going over to Zanzibar (which happens to most people anyway!).

A few good restaurants nearby that allow you to venture out at night.

Completely affordable with breakfast included, this was a lovely little hotel.
On our low budget, it was luxurious - towels provided and powerful showers with plenty of hot water. The bedding was clean and comfortable and there was a fan in our room which meant we got a great sleep. Though it's not in the most glamorous of locations, there are plenty of restaurants and internet cafes in the area, and it is near to the ferry port for Zanzibar too. A great base from which to explore Dar.
The hotel's laundry service is also highly recommended!
For a budget hotel in Dar, I'd go to the Safari Inn every time.

A basic backpackers hotel. The area is fine once you get over the number of people on the streets. We walked everywhere but not singly.

Having stayed in budget accommodation in East Africa, the Safari Inn was disappointing. Our room was absolutely swarming with mosquitoes, and no net was fitted. We were able to borrow a net from reception but it was not big enough to fit the bed and had to be hung from the ceiling fan which itself was so old and noisy it coudn't be used. The sheets were dirty from the outset. Whilst breakfast was supposedly included in the price, this was merely coffee and two slices of stale toast. They tried to charge us extra for some eggs, to make it a breakfast actually worth eating!
In terms of positives, the location is good and close to the city centre, and in terms of appearance and safety it is what one would expect from a busy budget hostel. Overall however i would not recommend it to other travellers on any budget.

Room Tip: Insist on a fitted mosquito net or do not stay here

We have stayed at Safari Inn many times , first time 1998. The hotel has changed since the mostly to the better. But it has become darker surronded by other houses. The view it is not very nice.
But other things are good. It is cheap. The rooms are clean. It is safe.Breakfast is ok.

My husband and I stayed here twice during a recent trip to Tanzania. The rooms are sparse but well-kept and I was delighted to find hot showers. The free breakfast is generally simple -- with coffe/tea, fruit, juice, and toast... sometimes with an egg. We stayed in a fan room, which was enough for us on a budget. We were repeatedly pestered by their local taxi drivers. But overall, it was a decent stay. We tried a night at another nearby backpacker but ended up back at the Safari Inn anyways.

It's hard to find, on the side street, but taxis know where it is. We paid around 20$ for a room without air-con. I definitely recommend to add 5$ and take with air-con. Fan is not enough with this temperature and humidity! We had a small room without misquito net, but there were no mosquitos and rooms are sprayed every night. Bed was a bit tough, but quite good for sleeping. Clean sheets. Hot water is also available. For breakfast (included in the price) you have tea/coffee, tost, jam and fuits - standard in the region.
If you look for a cheap room in Dar, I can recommend.
