“Yummy food!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 24, 2013

I loved how good their Chinese cuisine were. The menu had quite a variety and recommendations by the waitress were good. It's really a top class restaurant and you can have insane of amount of food with cocktails for equivalent of 25GBP per person. It helps that it's located in the gorgeous Sea Cliff complex. As it is well known in Dar it's very easy to get to. The concierge can order taxi for you.

“So much food....but quite average given the price!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 24, 2013

We stumbled upon Alcove whilst attempting to find a place that served lunch on a Monday. After visiting Great Wall and Addis in Dar (both of which were closed), we returned to Seacliff having eaten at Karambezi before.
Instead, we decided to try Alcove. The restaurant was pretty much empty at 1pm, which is more typical of the Tanzanian eating schedule rather than the restaurant itself.
The restaurant is indoors, with tasteful decorations, nodding towards South Asian and East asian cultures and traditions. It is very much in typical Asian/colonial style, with high roofs, spacious and overlooking the gardens of the Seacliff restaurant. It was a little bit dark, and I can imagine it being quite bad when it's dusk or evening service.

The service was slow. It took a long while to order drinks, which took at least 15 mins to arrive. The food also took nearly 45mins -1 hour to arrive.

The drinks were around 6,000-10,000 shillings each (£3-£5) which is quite expensive for Tanzania. The strawberry milkshake was very good though.
In terms of the food, each dish was approximately 20,000-30,000 shilling, which I thought was ludicrous pricing (£9-£20)! It is much higher than any other restaurant I've visited in Tanzania.
When the food arrived, I understood why. The portions are enormous. The order below was enough for 5 people easily.

We ordered the Chicken satay (7/10), the salt and pepper prawns (8/10), Jade chicken (8/10), Spring rolls (6/10), Beef noodles (7/10) and the steamed rice. Overall, the food was very average. I've had a lot better.

The price was the ridiculous bit however. For all the dishes, the total was $100!!! That is ridiculous considering the fact we're in Tanzania, and did not have any alcohol. For value, it is not worth it- and there are better alternatives elsewhere.

“Consistent quality of food...”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 13, 2013 via mobile

its one of the best indian rest in town with consistency of food quality. Service is good and normally it takes 20min to prepare ur food. Atmosphere is good and serves alcohol too. Its in town and parking space available. Better to make reservation during weekends as its always full. Approx $18/per person. I think this is the best place for indian food.

“Disappointingly average”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed March 25, 2013

We decided to visit Alcove at the Seacliff A) because we had a good meal at the sister restaurant in town and B) lots of people told me how good it was. Decor is OK but bland, one of those places with bright lights and no consideration given to create an atmosphere. Food was OK although, Amongst a number of dishes (we were a group of 6) we had to send back one as being so heavily salted it was un edible. The horror came with the price of drinks tsh 6,000 for local beer and even more horrendous, Tsh 6,000 for a local water! (Translated to $ this is not exceptional, but against local prices and similar outlets it's horrific) generally , if other things are great, who cares - unfortunately there was no balance in the price/value equation - sorry, I will not be coming back
