“Hotel review”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 16, 2013

Hotel continental is not to be confused with hotel intercontinental.
This hotel is run by locals and is thus of different experience.

Tangier was our first stop in morocco and we were only there for one day (we left for chefchaouen the next day).
It is a good location if you are there just for a day. It is at the edge if the medina, therefore easy access by taxi if you arrive by taxi. Easy walk to medina, about 3 minutes, and about 15minutes to the big roundabout. But there isn't much in tangier from what we saw.

Western toilet and a shower. Shower was cold and the water was barely trickling. Im not sure if this is because we were staying on the top floor. Very unpleasant because we were there during winter. I would not stay there again.

Room is basic and clean.

The hotel is not handicap friendly. It has many stairs leading into the hotel lobby and many stairs leading up to the rooms. For people with knee problems, it may be challenging. However it seems stairs are unavoidable in morocco as far as my experience.

The hotel is not as nice as it looks in the pictures.
The main photograph of the front of the building is featured on the website. The front of the hotel indeed photographs well, but the foyer view is less than impressive as it looks out onto a harbor under construction.
The other pictures that show traditionally Moroccan interior is actually only photographing the old preserved part of the hotel, which you can see on the way to the area you eat breakfast ( you eat breakfast on a foyer which is unimpressive). This is a very small part of the hotel and you do not stay in that part of the hotel.

Service was okay. The hotel manager speaks good English. However there is only be manager to man the desk, and he is thus very busy tending to all the hotel guests. He gave us the wrong information to take the ctm bus to chefchaouen. Please be advised that if you are taking a ctm bus, you do not go to the main bus stop. Rather you go to the ctm ticket office which is also where the bus leaves from. It is best if you tell the taxi driver ctm bus. It takes about 10minutes to get there by taxi from the hotel.

Room Tip: Do not get a room on the top floor. I think you might get slightly better water pressure.

My husband and I stayed here for one night after getting the ferry over from Tarifa. We were able to walk from the port and once settled it was an easy walk into the Medina. The hotel, especially from the outside, has a great air of faded grandeur. The room we were given originally had twin beds and no view but when we asked to change the manager was very helpful. There wasn't another room ready at the time but he was happy to look after our bags in reception while we went out to spend the afternoon exploring. We ended up with a decent double bed in a room with a fab view of the port - we even had our own tiny terrace. Bathroom and breakfast both fine - all in all a very good start to our trip.

We loved the hotel - you can imagine Humphrey Bogart living the high life here in the 1940s. It has aged since then of course, but the original splendour is still evident. Now it is a relic, but cheap and clean and the staff are very helpful. Location is excellent. We stayed one night after travelling on the train through Spain and before catching another train to Marrakech.

Room Tip: Try to get one facing the sea with a balcony. There aren't many with balconies.

Travelled with 3 others. we had a room for 4 only stayed for 1 night on arrival from Tariffa Spain. The hotel is huge a bit old but very cheap and clean. The hotel is next to the Medina in which we found a guide for the night to take us around. This is a taste of what to expect for your stay in Morocco. An amazing place. This old hotel has character and the tiled hand work in the breakfast room ( breakfast was plentiful ) is amazing. Standing on the balcony you look across the bay and the port. Would stay here again .

The hotel is old, prices are high for the standard, BUT the atmosphere is incredible. The hotel is directly on the port, near the old medina, and this is the only good aspect. Don't go there looking for a nice place to stay, for relax but if you are searching "Tanger old beatnik atmosphere"...this is the place!

I don't agree with the one and two star reviews. Hotel Continental was THE place to stay in Morocco, a half century ago. No doubt the hotel is old and past it's prime but staying here is visiting a piece of history, seeing how the rich and famous traveled decades ago. Consider this was the height of opulence when built in the late 19th century. The tile work rival anything you will see elsewhere in Morocco.

The hotel feels dark and somewhat dingy, more like an old museum rather than a run down hotel. We stayed in a spacious family room with a double bed and two twins. A window opened to a small balcony overlooking the harbor. The floors were wide plank unfinished wood with warn look that showed their years. The room was basic with only an old TV on a stand and an attractive antique dresser that I could imagine was there for a half century. The bathroom must have been recently renovated as it was spotless and modern.

The area immediately outside the hotel is dirty and run down but this is true for most of Morocco. The location is good if you are interested in visiting the medina as it sits right on the edge, walking distance from the ferries.

As with all tripadvisor reviews you need to set your expectations. A five star review is not saying this place is a Four Seasons while one star reviews are off the mark suggestion this place is a dump. I believe the age and history of this hotel adds to it's charm. If you are interested in history this place is for you, if you want modern opulence, look elsewhere.
