“Mmmm a bit questionable”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed November 12, 2012

Ok from the beginning ,we wanted to go to tangiers Morocco from our base in calahonda Spain ,we did a little research first and went with a company called FRS from Tarifa port , the price included foot passenger passage ,2nights in continental hotel overlooking the port a drive around tangier the obvious touristy bit a guided tour in the old part to pre arranged shops ,but it did include all meals then on the second day a random scruffy guy was appointed to us to take us all over the kasbah which by the way the hotel was situated at the edge of ,the guide was a pleasant enough guy ,and advised us not to venture out at night because it wouldn't be safe ,but we were tired so didn't want to ,now the hotel was a very old and regal looking building the architecture was great ,we got taken up to the fourth floor and the kids had one room and me and the wife had another there was no lock on the door so we had to put our stuff in the kids room while we were out and at night a flimsy catch to lock it at night mmm not really secure as a little shove would have opened it ,the rooms were very dated and dilapidated but nonetheless clean ,the food was ok and edible, there is a shop in the lobby that had a nice man in it and told us we could look but ok if you don't buy anything and gave the females a necklace gratis which was nice ,he has a lot of odd items in there ,postcards as well ,oh and the mosque was close by with the call to prayer throughout the night ,and early morning ,but hey what can you expect for a bargain break for 5people was £69 pp all in

Room Tip: Don't expect anything more than average if you aren't paying much to stay here ,they do have...

Staying at this hotel takes you back in time! It has a flair of the old days when Jack Kerouac or Winston Churchil stayed here! Each room has a framed picture of some important person who stayed here, the common area, reception and the breakfast restaurant are just beautiful! Rooms are equipped with all you need, but do not expect the furniture to be new. The waiters dressed in white shirts and black costumes serve you a nice sweet breakfast and coffee/tea. The location is very good, just next to the port. Ideal when you just arrive to Morroco by a ship and need to stay overnight before heading to discover the rest of the country!

You can see the hotel from the dock at which the Tarifa ferry lands, and it's about a 15 minute walk from the dock. You cross the street and a large empty parking lot to get to the several flights of outdoor stairs that lead to the hotel. The parking lot is somewhat debris-strewn and the bottom of the stairs looks like an old Roman ruin, so don't be put off by its appearance. The hotel is on the edge of the Medina so there is easy access to the souks and the old town. Our room was clean and very roomy and was in good shape. It also had a balcony overlooking the docks and harbor. The breakfast, as mentioned in other reviews, consisted of pastries, jams, packaged cheese, and coffee. The public areas in the hotel are decorated in the old Moroccan style and are quite interesting and worth walking around to see. All in all, I thought it was a good deal for an overnight stay. One negative thing was that the AC in our room did not work, but we did not realize it until we returned to the room for the evening.

The Continental is directly opposite the port, you do not have to walk through the medina to reach it. The rooms are comfortable and clean. The view, I think, is one of the best in the city. The bathroom was very nice (could have done with some drapes!), and the bed comfortable. Breakfast is also very nice in the beautiful room they have upstairs. I would definitely stay here again.

Room Tip: We stayed in a double room with a view of the port.

Faded, yes, but the Continental still exudes the romance of its former glories. Besides which, it is perfectly perched on the Mediterranean edge of medina with a glorious view of the port, sea, and, on a clear day, Spain. It's an easy walk to or from the port with ferries to tarifa.

Great customer service! Simple breakfast of fresh orange juice, pastries, and (decent) coffee.

Room 113 faced onto a residential street in the medina. It was fairly noisy at times (earplugs!) but I valued the glimpses it offered into life in medina. The room was basic, but with a really comfortable bed. The shower had problems with drainage, likewise the toilet didn't flush well. No fan or ac but in August it cools off considerably at night.

Tangier enchanted me in my 2 days, and that comes from someone who has spent months in the country over several years.

Dont go during ramadan everything is closed and mosques loudhailing all night. Also this hotel does not have a turkish bath. Not one that works anyway. It is opposite the port and they are building a new one so bulldozers going all day from early morning. The car park at the bottom of the steps is also where they dump rubbish and bottles very early. Would give this hotel a miss. Lots of youngsters begging in the car park also! No air con in rooms!!

We spent one week on the Continental and we love it.
+: Located just beside the port (steps from the ferry from Tarifa) and the medina, cheap, beautiful and typical Morrocan decor, clean, friendly staff, working AC. And the terrace where you get to have breakfast...
-: Ok, the room are a bit dated. Let say you feel like a starlett from the '50.
