“Super weekend in Meknes with great hosts.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 17, 2010

Riad Lahboul is a fantastic place to stay. The hosts are very friendly and they ensure you feel at home. I do not travel on my own that often but I had a lovely time nevertheless. I had a cookery lesson with Manou which was fabulous. She shared her knowledge about the local culture which was very interesting. The visit to the local bakery was super.
If you plan to visit Meknes, this is a wonderful place to stay. Don't forget to visit Volubilis - an archaeological site situated near Meknes. Volubilis features the best preserved Roman ruins. It's a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Meknes apparently isn't on everyone's must see list, squeezed between Casablanca and Fez, yet it's a really interesting, relaxed city to spend a couple of days that's less touristy and hectic than some other cities and yet has plenty to see.

What made staying in Meknes particularly awesome was the Riad Lahboul. Owned by an English guy (Simon) and his Moroccan wife (Mona), the Riad is 5 minutes walk from the main square, 15 minutes walk from the new town and was the friendlies place I stayed. From organising to pick me up from the train station (2 hours later than scheduled), to showing me around the city and organising a trip to Volubilis, the service was friendly and first class. Both Simon and Mona were friendly, interesting to talk to and provided excellent service. The other high point was the food at the Riad (cooked by Mona). It was fantastic - as good as anything I had in Morocco. I can still taste the spicy beef I had on my first night!

Do yourself a favour, put Meknes on your Moroccan itinerary and stay at the Riad Lahboul!

We spent a wonderfull moment at Riad Lahboul. Mouna and Simon warm welcome and kindness made us feel at home in their magnificient Riad, perfectly located near the Medina, Bab El mansour and steps from the "ville nouvelle". Don't miss Mouna's diner and the nearby authentic and relaxing Hammam. I'll go back and will recommend Riad Lahboul to anyone staying in Meknès!

The best place we stayed in whilst in Morocco, due mainly to the staff and owners Simon and Mouna,They couldn't have done enough for us,Mouna introduced my wife to the bathhouse, even took her there, what an experience!! Simon was always available to help in anyway possible,eg,walk with us so we didnt get lost finding our way back, giving us his phone number should we get lost, and promising to come and get us should we need help. Mouna even took us and showed us where to catch buses to various towns. The Riad is unbelievably beautiful with its tiled columns and walls and such a surprise . Like I say further on,"its a hidden gem" ! Itsthe must place to stay when visiting Meknes.

Great place to stay from one night to an entire week. Meknes is a wonderfull city and with the help and tips from Mouna and Simon it was a great experience for both the parents and the children.
Lovely decorated rooms, a friendly reception with all the help you can imagine and great cooking.

Simon and Mouna, .... Thanks a lot !

I stayed here for 3 days and loved every minute of it. The Riad is absolutely beautiful with the most intricate and amazing mosaics - the best I've seen in a Riad, and the stay was a home-away-from-home - I really felt comfortable here. The rooms were spacious and clean and Mouna and Simon could not have been more helpful.

After the craziness of the Souks & Place el-Hedim it was a joy to return to the tranquillity of Riad Lahboul and relax on the terrace.

Definitely try out Mouna's food - it was amazing, and is a great opportunity to eat Moroccon food other than the Tajines and Couscous that we were normally served elsewhere

The most salient sensation experienced at the Riad Lahboul, was that of integrating into a family home that is fully assimilated into the the local community. Situated on the periphery of the ceaselessly stimulating Medina, Riad Lahboul allows one to experience a genuine slice of Moroccan life that is refreshingly far removed from the tawdry hotels that isolate themselves from the heart of Meknes. Guests are unhesitantly accepted as if consanguine, a trait which evokes a unique charm and character which is so often lacking from impersonal and businesslike accomodation.

The interior of Riad Lahboul is perennially enchanting and will very likely induce a stiff neck due to the consistent surveying of each impressively decorated wall and ceiling. Although a mere minute's meander from the buzzing, central hive of the old city, retreating to the Riad during the often intense heat of midday is an immediately therapeutic and calming experience. It is equally meditative to relax and socialise on the beautiful open terrace that, with dusk's arrival, unveils a mesmeric sonic panorama of live music and the myriad voices of gregarious locals.
