“Stunning and historic riad hidden behind closed door”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 27, 2014

Snaking your way through the alleyways of the historic old town you cannot imagine what you will soon discover . Behind a single door in the wall is a corridor lined with photos leading to a wonderful courtyard garden . At each end small lounges are tucked away in nooks. In the centre tables dressed beautifully and with fresh flowers . Rising above this courtyard is a balcony which on either side has the riads superior suites. These have stained glass windows, carved wooden shutters and antique furniture . The ensuite bathrooms have brass wash basins and traditional tiled showers . On the level above this is a roof terrace where you can sit in the shade . Breakfasts are a sumptuous affair - brown seeded bread, four types of preserves, pastries , yoghurt , fruit salad, freshly squeezed orange and good coffee. This is so individual and special it beats all the big hotels with their corporate offerings and faceless if opulent facades. You won't be disappointed if you book here

Room Tip: Go for the deluxe suites - it's worth the extra

We arrived at the door of Dar Zahia after dark having followed our escort through a maze of ever narrowing streets and alleyways not quite knowing what to expect. As the heavy door was opened a gentle light from a trail of candles streamed out we and entered into the beauty and peace of the riad. With the delicate scent of amber and musk and the very gentle, soothing music our travel weary bodies were soon soothed and relaxed.

We were greeted by Paolo and his lovely team of ladies. Their manner was gentle and obliging and every effort was made to relax and welcome us into what should be described as a luxurious home. Dar Zahia has a very special feel of being luxuriously spoiling but in a subtle and discrete way. It is comfortable and spacious, and while the accommodation feels open one can retreat into privacy at any time. Our bed was strewn with rose petals and was heavenly to sleep in! It was amazingly quiet at night and in the early morning.

Breakfast was a feast, beautifully prepared and plentiful to set us up for the adventures of the day ahead. If it so suits you can request a private dinner cooked by one of the lovely ladies - book ahead. At the end of the day it was fabulous to take a drink and enjoy the cooling of the evening on the roof terrace - all we had to do was request what we wanted and it appeared!

While the riad is beautiful, and may compare to well to others, what sets it apart is the kindness and hospitality of Paolo and Emanuela. Paola has an incredible sense of what suits his guests and advises on restaurants, shopping, spas and site-seeing accordingly. His hand drawn map was invaluable - if you like to plan ahead share your thoughts with Paolo and he will hone your plans to make them really work for you.

All in all we had a magical trip, experiencing the marvels of old and the new Marrakech with all the hustle and haggling, the crush and the wonders of the city with the knowledge that we could escape and recover in the haven of Dar Zahia at any time - or take a plunge and sunbathe at the sister Riad Anjar. Thank you to Paolo for making our trip so special and memorable.

We have been to Marrakech a few times and stayed in exquisite raids each time. Riad dar Zahia was a little smaller but did not disappoint. The Sakina suite for 3 nights was perfect. The stained glass, the warm colours of the furnishings and the antiques were all beautiful to be surrounded by. Paolo was always attentive and very helpful with any special requests. Personally, I could have done without the serene music but that's just a matter of taste. We ate at the Riad one evening - it was good but quite expensive.

Emanuela was v. available from the beginning. She explained us main monuments and places to visit and ensured us about safety in Marrakech. The Riad is v. beautiful, the breakfast served in the morning is delicious. After walking around the city which is very noisy, it was amazing to get back to the Riad that was so quite. Perfect place to relax after some sightseeing. It is located 3 mins from Souks and 5 mins from the main square Jemaa El Fna. We celebrated my fiance's B-day, so Emanuela recommended us great place to eat, we loved it!!! Every detail of this trip we enjoyed fully!!

You won't be able to find better place to stay in Marrakesh.

Definitely an oasis of peace in the heart of the busy and chaotic Medina. After a hot day of wandering around the narrow souks and markets of the old town, bargain and tasting the delis of Marrakesh, coming back to Dar Zahia and relax in this extra fine acommodation was a priceless experience. Paolo and rest of the staff were very nice and kind, and make the stay a trully recomforting medication for those like us, who scape from the stress of daily office work.
Don´t forget to try at least breakfast and dinner here, food was top quality and completelly traditional home made style.
Ah, and finally don´t loose your time and effort pulling your bags to/from the airport, let Paolo offer you the local way ;)

The Riad Dar Zahia is a wonderful place to stay. It retains the original ornate plasterwork and carvings which are equally as impressive. The Riad is small and cosy with lots of attention to detail. The three course dinner we ate on our first night could not be improved and compared favourably with top priced restaurants in the area. Breakfast is plentiful with lots of variety, from fresh fruit to crepes, omelette and pastries. The very spacious bedroom (suite) is extremely comfortable with a choice of chairs for relaxation as well as a terrace. There is also a beautiful roof terrace if you wish to catch some sun.
Many thanks to Paolo and staff who could not have made our stay any better.

Wow!

Riad Dar Zahia, our second Riad, was truly spectacular; 18th Century opulence was the order of the day. Although our other, first, Riad was placed higher in TA’s lists, I would say that the two are actually incomparable as they are both absolutely beautiful but in entirely different ways. Riad Dar Zahia has retained its unique 18th Century charm, as can be seen in the few photographs that I've included in this review. (Plus, the Dar Zahia is situated right in the middle of the souks!)

Paulo, the owner (an affable Italian, whose English is excellent and who is often knocking about the place) arranged for us to be served tea whenever we required, even providing an overnight tray for us with a Thermos flask etc. We appreciated this enormously, as the staff finished at 10pm and didn’t normally return until 8 the following morning. There was no additional charge.

The breakfasts were ample and very good, including bread and butter, jam, cheese, fruits and yogurts, lovely orange juice, pastries, fatirs, eggs and tea and coffee. We thoroughly enjoyed them!

Our suite, "Saida", was altogether sumptuous! The furnishings were all in keeping with the general ambience of a luxurious home. The bedding was of a high quality, and very comfortable and warm; the evenings and nights were still quite chilly in Marrakech when we visited in March.

The suites crowning glory, however, was the fabulous sunken bath/shower. It would be difficult to describe it adequately, so please have a look at my photo’s.

I’ve no hesitation in recommending this astounding place to anyone who is looking for a Riad which exemplifies the genuine Marrakchi heritage of Islamic architecture and decoration, it is truly beautiful!
