“Delightful Marrakech”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 3, 2013

We selected this riad on the basis of the reviews and were not by any means disappointed. Me and my partner were the only guests staying at riad safa and so had full reign of the beautiful roof terrace every morning and relaxing lounge every evening. Having said this, this would be an ideal place to rent out fully with family and friends. Jean Michel (Frederic was unfortunately away),made us feel very welcome, gave us some invaluable advice about haggling and catered to our every need before we even had a chance to ask. Like others have commented, we strongly recommend having at least one evening meal there - the chicken tangine was delicious! In relation to the location, the riad is about a ten minute walk to the manic fantastic mayhem of el Jemma fna and the souks. Although there are indeed closer roads /hotels to the centre, there are a number of hidden stalls and shops on route along a series of winding alleyways which very few tourists get to see - this is where most of my shopping was done. In short, a lovely few days.... I highly recommend! Barbara & Mark

We have just returned from spending 4 nights in Riad Safa, and would definately return for more! This was our first trip to Morocco, and have fallen in love with the place, including this beautiful Riad. We were rather nervous about our first trip to Marrakesh, and when booking our accomodation we chose to be met at the airport and booked the hotel's taxi transfer service - this turned out to be a very wise move, and I cannot recommend this service highly enough, as Marrakesh can be a confusing place to navigate round initially! We were met by Riad owner Frederic, who showed us the way through the many narrow streets, and made sure we were fully armed with maps and guide books ready to explore on our own. The Riad is an oasis of calm just a short walk from the main attractions of Marrakesh, if you want to experience life in the vibrant medieval city, then look no further. The owners, Frederic and Jean Michel have made Riad Safa a beautiful place to stay, and along with Said and the other staff who do everything possible to make your stay a good one, nothing is too much trouble. All of the food we were served during our stay was superb, so was the Berber whisky! The Riad has it"s own Hammam and plunge pool and can arrange the traditional Hammam and massages for you. Of course we had to indulge ourselves and have the works, well, when in Rome! We stayed in the Sumatra room which suited us perfectly, espeically with double sinks in the bathroom. We had the opportunity to look at all the rooms over our stay and will now try to work our way round them all in the next few years! Frederic also arranged an excursion for us to the Atlas moutains with a Berber driver/guide in a 4x4, what an amazing day, the memories will stay with us forever. All in all, a great trip, we shall return, Insha'Allah !

You are no doubt reading this as you are in the position of trying to pick a nice place to stay in Marrakech (as we were back in September 2012), out of the hundreds of well rated riads on offer on various travel and hotel search engines.
To be brief, I will say that a stay at Riad Safa will undoubtedly be a highlight of your visit to Marrakech. The glowing reviews don’t lie!

For those interested in greater detail about this little gem….read on!

I don’t often write reviews (a cliché, but true in this case) and particularly not lengthy ones, but such was the warm, friendly and incredible experience we had from our stay that I have felt compelled to spread the word!
Based on the many recent favourable reviews on Trip Advisor, we selected Riad Safa along with 2-3 other riads to check their availability for our visit over the New Year in search of some winter sun. Frederic replied pretty quickly to our email enquiry and offered lots of helpful information regarding our arrival in Marrakech and about the taxi transfer to the riad in the heart of the winding, narrow streets of the Medina. When Said met us at our taxi drop off, he took our suitcase and set off through the bustling streets, with us struggling to keep up with him as he elegantly glided through the thronging crowd. When we stopped outside a large, very old looking doorway in a dimly lit narrow street, I wondered if we had made a mistake and the website photographs had been misleading compared to what we had been expecting. He opened the door, leaving us both with our jaws dropped as the beautiful, palace-like interior was revealed. After such a fantastic first impression, our stay at Riad Safa, (almost impossibly) got better each day we stayed there. We stayed for a week in total, with one overnight excursion to the desert, organised with the help of Frederic. We had one of the best meals of our trip that first night in the riad...a delicious kefta tagine. It was so good that I can still taste the delicious flavours just thinking about it! Said repeatedly encouraged us to feel like we were in our own home, and that this was our home in Marrakech. At first, I thought it was just something said to make us feel at ease. But after one day, it really did feel like home for us. A place of repose, away from the chaos outside in the Djemaa el Fna and the Medina. The house was wonderfully peaceful during the daytime and the evening time offers up the opportunity to meet with the other guests and swap stories of the days adventures dodging snake charmers and haggling for the best prices in the souks.
I can’t stress highly enough how our stay in the safe, homely confines of Riad Safa proved a godsend when we wanted to step inside and away from the bustling streets, even just for a short while. Taking a delicious Moroccan-style breakfast up on the sun-drenched roof-top terrace each morning was a great way to start each day.

Frederic, Jean-Michel and Said were a constant source of helpful advice and information. We particularly enjoyed Said’s company in the evening when we returned from dinner and sat and talked about Moroccan culture and life in general. We also learned a lot from Said about the Berber culture and his experience growing up on the edge of the desert. It was genuine experiences likes these that consistently bring us to seek out the Riad Safas of this world, over the ubiquitous brand name luxury hotels that seem to populate every popular tourist destination. And we can honestly say it is one of the best mid-level/boutique guesthouses we have ever stayed at.

The rooms are full of character, with a nice touch being the bathrooms/showers that appear to have been lovingly built in keeping to the old vernacular traditions, without losing the sense of luxury.

The staff were unendingly helpful and courteous. The guestrooms, and indeed the whole house was absolutely spotlessly clean.

When we look back on our Marrakech adventure, we simply can't imagine having stayed anywhere else. We give this place 10 gold stars...on a scale of 1 to 5!! we hope that we will return to Marrakech again one day and revisit this wonderful place.

And some final advice on staying at Riad Safa: be sure to eat in at least one of the evenings of your stay here (preferably the first, because you will be back for more) and treat yourself to some pampering with a hammam!
You will have no regrets!!

Room Tip: From what we saw, the rooms all had their own charming character. We stayed in the Catalina room whi...

We stayed at the Riad Safa for 6 nights over New Year's 2013. It was an absolutely wonderful place to stay - a peaceful oasis with a lovely warm and welcoming atmosphere! The rooms were gorgeous and very comfortable! Frederic, Jean-Michel, Said and all the staff at the Riad were extremely helpful and we enjoyed sharing many an interesting conversation with them. And the food… the very best we had in Morocco! Thank you for making our stay so special, it was a highlight of our trip. We will definitely be back to stay again when we next get to visit Morocco. Merci beaucoup … Shukran!

Room Tip: All the rooms are lovely... but the best are on the second level!

We stayed at the Riad Safa for 5 nights in January 2013. It was a wonderful place to stay and the location was perfectly close to the markets and square. We had excellent service from Frederic, Jean-Michel, Said and co with fantastic meals provided on the 3 nights we ate in. The atmosphere was just devine and it made our trip to Marrakech most memorable. I plan to stay here again when I next visit Marrakech!

My husband and I visited the riad over Christmas and had a truly relaxing time. Riad Safa is a perfect location - about 10-15 minute's walk from the Place des Epices and the Djemaa el-fna. Staff, Frederic and Said, were extremely helpful with recommendations of things to do and places to eat. It was so relaxing to come into this lovely house at the end of a long day of haggling in the souks. It is quiet, peaceful, clean, and very safe. We experienced beautiful weather and supreme hospitality. Be sure to eat dinner at least once in house - we ate three times and each meal was better than the last!
We would definitely go back. Be sure to email the Riad directly for bookings in order to get the best price.

Riad Safa was recommended to us by Michele from "Plan It Fes" who arranged our travel/tour, we were not disappointed. My traveling companion and I (middle aged females) arrived at Riad Safa via London, from Australia. Sied greeted us, explained everything and was fantastic for the entire visit, we were the only guests for the first evening. We enjoyed our wonderful meals on the rooftop, which was a real haven, with Sied explaining the history of this exciting country. The museum of old photographs (in the neighborhood) was a highlight as I am a "professional photographer". The Riad is tastefully furnished, service is exceptional and the food fantastic. I look forward to visiting again. Thank you Sied for looking after us so well. We really appreciated your knowledge and expertise. Great location. Also visit the Marjorelle Gardens.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Welcome at Riad Safa, a true haven of peace in the exciting Medina of Marrakesh.Riad Safa is located in one of the last authentic parts of the old city (medina), with some of the major cultural institutions just around the corner, and ten minutes by foot from the famous Jemaa el Fna square.Safa means serenity or pureness in Arabic, and it is our aim to provide you with a feeling of pure wellness during the longer or shorter time you stay with us. The atmosphere therefore, is very quiet. Even at the moments that the Imam of the neighbouring Mosque spreads his prayers over us; then you feel the mistery of the East and the presence of the languorous city.We speak English, French and Dutch and we love to help with everything you would want to be assisted with; whether it is a transfer from or to the airport, the booking of an excursion, or to have you accompanied safely home through the myriad of narrow alleys by our helpfull staff, after a 1001-night dinner in the medina. We want you to feel comfortable, and at home with us.Affordable luxury, that is what we want to offer you.Marrakesh is a bustling and buzzy city, so it is nice to know that after a tiring day of shopping in the souks (covered markets) or a visit to one of the palaces, you can immerse yourself in the lovely quiet of our Riad, and relax in one of the intimate "salons" or, during spring and summer, cool down at the small rooftop pool with a dewy glass. At night we offer a delicious "table d'hotes" in a romantic setting on the roofterrace, or indoors, just as you prefer.In-house hammam & wellness • we have a small hammam on the rooftopterrace, which you can book• on demand we can arrange for scrubs, massage, facials, pedicure and manicure. ... more   less
