“1 Week in Riad Assouel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 1, 2014

Just back from our week in Marrakech, staying in Riad Assouel. Amazing Riad with fantastic staff - loved Marrakech.

Glad we accepted the free transfer from the airport, as we would have been unlikely to find the Riad on our own, especially at night.

Assouel is a great location to the Souks with some fantastic places to eat (Kui Zin) and drink (Cafe Arabe, sells alcohol) along the way. I love how you wonder along the motorbike, bicycle and donkey filled streets to find the little wooden door... stepping into the tranquility of the Riad.

Food at Assouel was fab, breakfasts were yummy (yoghurt, fruit, moroccan pancakes, bread, jams, mint/tea and coffee) and supper was always as good as the meals that we had in town. (Their red wine is delicious too!). Our bill at the end of the stay was much less than we expected and we didn't hold back with the mint tea, food and extras.

I had a traditional hammam and massage at the Raid - which was great and good value too.

One of the best aspects of our stay were the staff, attentive, friendly and extremely helpful. We didn't find them 'pushy' at all. They found us good deals for a half day tour of the city and a private taxi to the mountains - much better than we saw anywhere else.

Staff would book our evening meals outside the Riad and take us to the restaurant if we wanted them too (navigating Marrakech can be a little tricky, especially in the dark).

Fantastic holiday and raid. Will stay here again when I next visit Marrakech (which I will do... with more space in my bags for bringing things back!).

Note: Don't get your money out in the UK, their ATMs are really cheap - you get a much better exchange rate than in the UK, we averaged at £145 = 2,000 Dirham when from ATM. (lots of ATMs in the main square)

We spent a full week here and had a fantastic time, booked on the basis of reading previous reviews it lived up to expectations. A beautiful riad just far enough away from the hustle and bustle of the main tourist area to be a centre of calm and relaxation. The owners and staff were delightful and couldn't have been more helpful and charming. The riad and rooms were clean and well furnished my only slight gripe is that the showers could possibly do with a little refurbishment.
If you've never been to Marrakech before the maze of side streets and alleys could be a little intimidating, but rest assured people are very friendly and always willing to help. We even used Nordine one evening to book and take us to a restaurant we fancied visiting...piece of cake! We ate in the riad on several occasions and the food and wine were excellent.
We will certainly be visiting again. Thanks to all the staff -Mohamed, Nordine, Abdou, Zahira, Fadoua, Najia, Sana and of course the owners who made our stay the thoroughly enjoyable experience that makes a holiday memorable. Finally a big plus is being picked up and returned to the airport.

This is a lovely place. All the people are extremely nice, the rooms are lovely, the service is attentive and the atmosphere is just right. The criticisms of the Assouel's location in the medina are absolutely irrelevant to the experience. It may be a few minutes further away from the square than some other places, but it's five minutes from the Marrakech Museum, walking everywhere (including through the less tourist frequented bits of the medina) is one of the pleasures of the place, and there is no reason whatsoever to be concerned about safety (we walked back to the riad every evening we were there). Do not be put off by the few poor reviews; I always read the criticisms first, and the ones the Assouel has received do not reflect our experience in any respect.

Five of us recently stayed here for 2 nights on our first trip to Marrakech. We booked the Ourika Suite (which sleeps upto 4 people) & M'goun standard room for 2 nights. It was a great experience at excellent value for money.

The Riad itself is simply beautiful in decor, tucked away on a quiet street in Marrakech with easy walking access to the Souks and main tourist square in the Medina/ Old town. We choose to stay at a Riad rather than a large branded hotel on the outskirts of town as we wanted a more authentic experience.

The first piece of advice would be to arrange for the staff to collect you at the airport which is what we did based on previous reviews. My husband & I are extremely well travelled however finding this Riad would be near on impossible especially if you have never been to Marrakech before.

First impressions of Riad Assouel were fantastic. The decor was beautiful throughout, with a small swimming pool in the centre of the courtyard. Painted in beautiful white paint with traditional Moroccan furnishings. The hospitality of Muhammed was simply first class. We were warmly greeted with Moroccan Mint tea & pastries, along with local maps and the priceless local knowledge that Muhammed shared with us including local restaurants and the 'do & don'ts' in Marrakech.

Food at the Riad was also of great quality. We had breakfast daily, a light lunch on arrival & we eat dinner in the courtyard on our last night. Breakfast was fresh OJ, Coffee, fruit, Yoghurt, bread, jam, Moroccan pancakes etc. It was perfect to start the day.

The rooms itself were wonderful too. Each room decorated differently in traditional decor. We loved the room however this is what prevented the hotel from scoring maximum marks. We had 2 plug sockets that were not working, hence side lamps not working, and having to constantly fight over plugging the heater in (it was cold), camera charger, lamp in, proved to be a let down as we only had one plug socket working. Also although the decor is old & traditional throughout the Riad, some aspects in our room, such as the shower really could do with being thoroughly cleaned.

The rooftop area on the Riad was beautiful too. Although obviously closed off when raining, we were able to enjoy this on our last morning when the sun made an appearance. It was the perfect place to relax with a book in the sun.

During our stay we all had a Hassam (traditional Moroccan scrub) and a Full body massage at the riad which was a fantastic and relaxing experience.

Overall this was a great stay. The service throughout cannot be faulted. Our impressions of Marrakech were completely different to what we expected, it can only be described as a 'senses overload'. Definitely the most confusing place I have ever travelled to. This riad was a god send at the end of a long day walking the souks/ medina, and we all looked forward to returning here to relax at the end of the day. To be honest unfortunately Marrakech would not be somewhere I will return to in the future, however wouldn't hesitate to recommend this Riad to others.

The owners and staff were extremely friendly and helpful. From meeting us at the airport, to driving us into the new town, to preparing the most delicious dinner for us and our friends on Christmas Eve complete with music and dance, we were made to feel very comfortable and welcome. The Riad is tucked away from the hustle and bustle of the Medina, but in a very convenient location.

Fantastic riad, wonderful welcome from Coralie the owner who came to meet us. Nothing was too much trouble throughout our 3 night stay. Breakfast was excellent along with a lovely lunch we had on our arrival. I would without doubt return and could not recommend this riad enough.

Very friendly and helpful staff and especially the French owner is so friendly, helpful and really gives you a warm welcome. You really feel yourself at home : very nice, warm and cosy decoration of the places. It is also a beautiful house in the middle of the Medina and inside it is remarkably quiet. They also have a great cook : typical Moroccan dishes tasted great.
If you want to relax a bit after a busy, crowdy day in the city, the rooftop terrace is a must !
