“Brilliant Riad in heart of Medina”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 15, 2012

Just returned from a fantastic four day stay at Riad Assouel and wanted to tell everyone how amazing the place was - its run by a charming Frenchman called Stephan, the Riad is stunning decorated in the classic Moroccan fashion, the rooms are beautiful, the Riad staff are all fantastic, very friendly and efficient (especially Mohamed and Abdou), and the food is superb (and easily better than some of the more famous restaurants in Marrakech). We ate at the Riad several times during our stay and always had a superb array of Morrocan dishes (the tagine lemon chicken was particularly noteworthy and the Morroccan salad was utterly delicious too).

We ate breakfast and lunch up on the delightful roof terrace - where one can sunbathe or just chill out drinking mint tea, watching the sunset over the medina roofs. Down in the courtyard, there are several large salons and sitting areas as well as a central pool for swimming.

The Assouel quartier of the medina is a typical area of the medina and is home to several tourist sights and high end restaurants like Le Foundouk and Cafe Arabe. The Souks are about two minutes stroll and the Place Jemaa el Fna is about 10-15 minutes walk. Although its possible to learn the route through the maze of alleys (I did), the Riad's staff will always either walk you to your destination or come and pick you up to bring you back if you need help.

The Riad also organised an excursion for us to the Ourika Valley and to the High Atlas Mountains which was a lovely escape from the confusion of the Medina and is very recommended.

Having visited Morocco three times, its clear the Riad Assouel is a real find. Not too expensive, friendly and professional and one of the nicest places I ever stayed - and will definitely return to as often as I can...

Room Tip: All the rooms are good but the suites are bigger...

Stayed at Riad Assouel for 4 nights in Dec 2011. Managed by a French couple who were courteous, helpful and friendly. Additional staff attentive and discreet. Lovely room, good amenities, tasty breakfasts. Ate in Riad one night and that was good too. They coped with my dietary requirements (booked in advance) without any reminders on arrival and we'd definitely return if we head back to Marrakech.

Where do I start? There are so many positives and no negatives. The rooms were great, the staff superb, it was clean and the food was Morocccan. There was a loittle pool and a roof terrace which was a great place to have breakfast, even in December. I would recommend that you try at least one evening meal in the Riad, because the service and food was excellent.
The Riad is in the old part of town which is a maze of narrow alleyways (maps are useless). On arrival telephone numbers are exchanged and if help is needed to get back to the Riad a quick phone call resuts in a member of staff showing up to guide you back.
Marrakech is a busy place, but the Riad is a place to relax and feel at home.

Room Tip: All rooms are good.

We stayed at the Riad Assouel for a week, having left our own B&B behind in the UK and looking forward to a completely relaxing break. This Riad was the one included in our holiday package and we felt totally secure, having read the reviews. It is situated right in the Medina, tucked away in one of the medieval streets. One thing for sure is that the reviews just give a small insight into the amazing hospitality and friendliness you will receive from your host, Moutaa. She keeps a tight ship and it certainly pays off as everyone could not have been more helpful. We didnt want to spend all day everyday out in the Souks, and spent quite a lot of time in the hotel, and we were always made to feel very welcome with freshly squeezed juices on offer.

All of the rooms in the riad are decorated to a high standard, and beautifully individually designed. They each have aircon, which when the temperatures are in the 30s is most welcome after walking all day.

The evening meals are excellent and we ate in most nights and had a variety of specially prepared Morrocan dishes - mostly presented in the traditional tajine. Moutaa also spent some time with us, showing us how to cook using the tajine, and we have come home having purchased loads of spices in the Souk, to experiment here.

Moutaa is a gem, and has become almost a sister to us. She will organise private transfers for you, tours around the Souk, and if you get lost, her phone number will be in your pocket before you leave the riad. Nothing is too much trouble.

We cannot recommend this lovely riad highly enough to anyone who is looking for a relaxing break within a bustling city. We will definitely be returning, and Moutaa and her family are always welcome to stay with us in the UK.

Room Tip: All the rooms are beautiful but the suites are delightful.

We stayed for 4 nights from 11-15 October 2011 leading up to my birthday. The welcome was fantastic which set the tone for the whole visit. The staff could not do enough. Moutaa, the manager, was extremely helpful and Mohammad was our own personal guide and protector! We were upgraded to a suite which was lovely - clean and spacious. Breakfast on the roof terrace was a great start to the day - huge and tasty so we didn'y need any lunch. We ate at the Riad twice in the evenings. Both nights were very special, especially the last night. Moutaa had arranged local musicians, balloons and a cake for my birthday. It was a brilliant evening - all of the staff joined in and there was dancing on the tables! I would highly recommend Riad Assouel and I would have no hesitation in staying there again.

We recently spent 5 nights in the riad Assouel and found it to be the friendliest and most accommodating accommodation we have ever stayed in. Also one of the most beautiful. Tucked away at the top end of the souks is this little gem of a riad, our first impressions were wow how amazingly beautiful and tranquil it is. Moouta and her staff who run it will do their upmost to make your stay a memorable one, nothing seems to be too much trouble. The rooms are just as amazing as the web site photos show and you feel as if you have been whisked away into a different world. The food is lovely and you can have a cooking lesson which is great fun. I would also highly reccommend the hamman and massage which where excellent.
The area around the riad does take a bit of getting used to staff will guide you through it initially but as I had read before hand if you get lost just look as if you know where you are going and eventually you will get there. I did feel that we had seen a small part of the real Marrakesh not just the touristy parts.
One of the things that worried me and many other previous travellers was what I could wear, as it was very hot but I did not want to be disrespectful to the locals. Well I need not have worried any normal holiday clothes for hot weather are fine just be sensible you do not need to cover your arms.
The evening meals at the riad a lovely and the house red wine is very good.
We hired a guide/driver for 2 days Jalil, he was fabulous the first day was around Marrakesh and the second was into the Atlas mountains, I got his details from trip advisor forum and he helped to make our stay so memorable, he spoke excellant English and went out of his way for us, he also got very good deals for our meals whilst we were with him.
If we go back to Marrakesh I would not hessitate to stay here again and I would reccommend it to anyone wanting to stay in a beautiful riad who wanted to experience a bit of real Marrakesh hospitality
