“Best Riad in Marrakesh”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 24, 2011

We recently spent 5 nights in the riad Assouel and found it to be the friendliest and most accommodating accommodation we have ever stayed in. Also one of the most beautiful. Tucked away at the top end of the souks is this little gem of a riad, our first impressions were wow how amazingly beautiful and tranquil it is. Moouta and her staff who run it will do their upmost to make your stay a memorable one, nothing seems to be too much trouble. The rooms are just as amazing as the web site photos show and you feel as if you have been whisked away into a different world. The food is lovely and you can have a cooking lesson which is great fun. I would also highly reccommend the hamman and massage which where excellent.
The area around the riad does take a bit of getting used to staff will guide you through it initially but as I had read before hand if you get lost just look as if you know where you are going and eventually you will get there. I did feel that we had seen a small part of the real Marrakesh not just the touristy parts.
One of the things that worried me and many other previous travellers was what I could wear, as it was very hot but I did not want to be disrespectful to the locals. Well I need not have worried any normal holiday clothes for hot weather are fine just be sensible you do not need to cover your arms.
The evening meals at the riad a lovely and the house red wine is very good.
We hired a guide/driver for 2 days Jalil, he was fabulous the first day was around Marrakesh and the second was into the Atlas mountains, I got his details from trip advisor forum and he helped to make our stay so memorable, he spoke excellant English and went out of his way for us, he also got very good deals for our meals whilst we were with him.
If we go back to Marrakesh I would not hessitate to stay here again and I would reccommend it to anyone wanting to stay in a beautiful riad who wanted to experience a bit of real Marrakesh hospitality

We read the other reviews before we went and thought that the Riad couldn't possibly be as good as everyone was saying... but it really is!!! What an amazing experience we had! We would definitely go back to this Riad if we ever returned to Marrakech, even if was just for a few days!
The private transfer we got took us as close to the Riad as we could get where we were met by the brilliant Abdou, the porter, who carried our bags the 3 min walk 'till we got there. When we got inside it was pure tranquility. A real contrast from the busy hustle of the crowded streets and alleys outside. We were met by the manager Moutaa when we arrived and I have to say that she is absoloutely fantastic. My girlfriend's bag got lost on the flight and Moutaa literally chased it up every hour for 3 days until finally it turned up. She even called in some favours from the airport staff to try to help find it. As if that wasn't enough, she also went out and bought my girlfriend some clothes. Moutaa, we love you!
The location of the Riad is in the old city or 'Medina' and is about a 20 min walk from the main square. This might put some people off, but we really enjoyed staying there and seeing how the old town worked. There's so much more character that the New City which might as well be in Spain or anywhere else hot and sunny! The walk to the square took you right through the Sooks as well which was always interesting. Don't worry about getting lost either. You will! But fear not, if you call the Riad, Abdou (or whoever is there) will come and find you. He showed us the way on the first day and walked us round half of Marrakech showing us where to go!!
The rooms in the Riad are all beautiful and decorated individually (We got a tour of the whole place when we arrived). As there was only one other person there when we arrived, we were upgraded to the best suit that they have which made for a really nice, comfortable stay. I think it was called Koutoubia?! The air con worked really well which helped during the hot nights. Only tiny gripe was that the water pressure in the shower was quite low. That is literally all I could find wrong with the whole Riad!
Eating at the Riad was an experience to remember too. Sat by the pool, surrounded by candles at night, enjoying a tagine and a bottle of wine was out of this world. Easily the best food we had in Marrakech without a doubt (and we tried a lot of different places). There was only one restaurant that compared, Cafe Arab (Very expensive though). Moutaa also gave us a free cooking lesson. We had to go out and buy the ingredients (that she paid for) and then she tought us how to cook them and we made a full 3 course meal. About 3 seconds after we ate, we were off to buy a tagine!
Everything at the Riad was amazing and there was nothing that the staff wouldn't do to help make your stay more enjoyable. Moutaa and Abdou were absoloutely outstanding and really made our stay there special. I can't recommend this Riad highly enough!

A fantastic welcome from the airport to inside the Riad, all the staff are welcoming, happy and very helpful. The accommodation was excellent (we were upgraded immediately and were very happy) as were all the rooms. We thoroughly recommend this Riad, from its luxury and calm interior through to the clamour and bustle in the alleys. You must prepare yourself to work your way to "La Place- Jemna" via the souks and on your return from the run of the gaunlet( the souks) to lie in the pool in the heart of the Raid and reflect on your achievement. From the roof terrace view Marrekesh, amazing during sunset and spectacular at sunrise.
Riad breakfast is great, service excellent and staff are very communiative, will help sort travel tickets to excellent destinations; which was priceless. Evening meal is good but a little pricy in euros.
Consider going to other destinations- Essaouira, Agadir which are amazing definately worth a trip, check ticket prices and book from Supatours. Casablanca 3 hrs away by train, worth missing.

As stated by previous guests this Riad is truly special.
We stayed and ate here for 7 nights in a lovely air-conditioned suite.
The Riad is located in the northern part of the Medina directly within a non-tourist area.
The day to day existence and activities of families, traders and locals is fully evident and gives a real sense of an aspect of Marrakech that can easily be missed if done as a day trip.
Although it can be difficult to find, when like us you are exceptionally geographically challenged, our exceptional host Mohammad was always available to find us when lost.
Mohammad made sure our needs were met and looked after us superbly. Moutaa was supposed to be on holiday but came in anyway to make sure service was as good as it could be.
The room we were given was well appointed, spacious and well maintained; it was the room that the owner uses when in town.
The terrace was a lovely place to sit, snooze and listen to the goings on in the neighbourhood in the evening and the pool was a welcome relief as temperatures reached 46'C!
No menu but every night we had a fantastic different three course meal cooked by Fatima.
We rented a car for four days and it was safe to keep it in an area about five minutes away from the Riad....incidentally, much is overstated in guide books that should know better about driving....I found the driving fun, it wasn't expensive or unsafe. In fact I've had worse experiences on the A57 Snake Pass!
We really enjoyed our stay here and would recommend it for anyone who wants to go beyond the potential anonymous stay usually in a large hotel.
This is a tranquil oasis within the hustle and bustle of a real medina run by people who have a passion for customer care.

Room Tip: Ourika is lovely

By a stroke of good fortune we found Riad Assouel - a serene and tranquil oasis amidst the hustle and bustle of the Old Town - and dined there on 3 of our 4 evenings. The Riad is beautifully furnished, the suites and bedrooms are elegant and the welcome we received from Moutaa and her staff was wonderfully warm, genuine and second to none.
Moutaa is a splendid host, her cuisine is well thought out, beautifully prepared and presented with a perfect balance of aromas and flavours.

We could not fault this Riad, the hospitality we received was exceptional and Moutaa's attention to detail greatly enhanced our enjoyment - what a find.

Situated close to the souk, and yet very quiet this beautifully restored riad is really worth a visit. There are 8 bedrooms - all large and individually decorated, as well as a pool, Tv lounge, roof terrace and hammam. The food deserves a special mention - absolutely fantastic, so much better than you will find in the centre of town unless you pay a fortune. The staff looked after us (2 women) really well and were always ready to assist with any queries or e.g. getting taxis to visit some of the 'not-to miss sights' of this amazing place. We would recoemmnd this riad to anyone consdering a stay in Marrakech. For a complete contrast we followed our stay here with a couple of days in the Ourika Valley - see our review of another great place to stay - Kasbah Agounsane

We have recently returned from a 4 night stay at Riad Assouel. Our trip was organised at very short notice to replace a cancelled holiday in Egypt and we were very pleasantly surprised to be taken to this beautiful little Riad. We were on our own for the first 2 nights so felt we spoilt. The staff were delightful and so helpful, especially on the last day when my husband thought he had lost his camera. The lovely little cleaner searched the room and found it in the suitcase. We ate in every evening as we were a little wary of going out on our own after dark. I'm sure we needn't have worried but we had booked this in advance. The food was delicious although no choice but as we love food it was a nice surprise each evening. I would not hesitate to recommend this hotel.
