“Most Gracious Hosts!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 3, 2011

I traveled to Morocco for the first time with my mom in February. As soon as we arrived to Dar Charkia, we were greeted with a warm welcome by Mike and Lisa. They welcomed us with mint tea and cookies. After a long day traveling this was just what we needed. Lisa then proceeded to hand us a map of Marrakesh with all of her notes of places to visit and things to do on it then made us dinner reservations at the most amazing restaurant. This type of service continued throughout our 4 day stay. Outside of the warm staff, our room was beautiful as was the entire hotel. It was so nice to return to such a tranquil environment after a long day out and about.
I work in the hospitality industry and have been to plenty of hotels all over and I can honestly say, Dar Charkia offered some of the best service I have ever experienced. Thank you again Mike, Lisa, and your gracious staff for the wonderful experience.

From first stepping into the hotel my friends and I were met with the highest standard of hospitality, friendlyness and expertise I have ever experienced at a hotel establishment. All members of the staff are always happy to help whether it is answering questions, book guides during your stay, giving helpful hints for navigating in Marrakech or what you would like to have for breakfast. I cannot imagine a more perfect location for a stay in Marrakech; you are within a maximum of 5 minutes walking distance from the main square Jamaa el Fna and right outside your doorstep are numerous shops and dining places. We perticularily loved cafe Arab which is only 2 minutes away from the hotel. The rooms themselves are the decorated flawlessly with Moroccan luxuries and it was a joy sleeping there. You truly feel that you are cared for in this little establishment. Also, the breakfast you will be served every morning is one of the most wonderful meals you will ever have in your life! When I go back to Marrakech one of the highlights will without a doubt be to repeat my stay at Dar Charkia. Imagine a hotel which is perfectly sized, perfectly staffed, perfectly located and has an incredible standard of luxury and you have just described Dar Charkia. I loved it here and was truly sad to leave at the end of our journey to Morocco. You will not regret spending you time in Marrakech based at Dar Charkia!

Best Wishes

Christina

We stayed at Dar Charkia over New Year and had a brilliant time. The staff were delightful and Michael gave us invaluable advice on where to visit and what to see. The riad is perfectly situated in Dar el Bacha, an easy walk to the medina. We had a wonderful banquet on Hogmanay with memorable dancing! Michael and Lisa were terrific hosts.

From the first moment when you arrive at Dar Charkia you can tell your going to be in for a wonderful stay.

We were greeted very warmly by Lisa & Michael who advised us on the best places to visit in the town. Lisa kindly marked out on a pocket of the best places to shop and where go for dinner and lunch, even where you can find the cleanest toilets. Lisa also helped with any booking of restaurants or outings.

The city is fantastic, full of character and culture. Great fun bargaining in the markets and walking round the city. I would recommend the cookery and spa day at the Villa Savinios. The cooking is basic but you get taught the basis of Morrocan cuisine. You have two teacher's who lead and you follow their instructions and cook yourself. It was really enjoyable. After that you go and get scrubbed hard and washed with olive mud, have a massage, then end the food you prepared.

The staff at Dar Charkia are all really pleasant and more than willing to help. Valentine's Day was salvaged by Rhasid, who worked in the evening, who drove me on his scooter to pick up a pizza when my wife was ill.

All in all it was a very enjoyable stay and I would recommend to everyone.

My husband surprised me with a birthday long weekend trip to Marrakech - I won't disclose my age here!
I thoroughly enjoyed the hustle & bustle of Marrakech but this riad proved to be a calm haven tucked away in the quiet backstreets, only about a five minute walk from the souks.
Our room (Khmissa Suite) was clean, comfortable and spacious although we spent little time in it whilst at the hotel, making ourselves at home in the various communal areas within the hotel. We ate breakfast on the roof terrace, played games in the lounge, read books in the courtyard and ate a fantastic evening meal in the cosy dining area.
The food was fantastic. Breakfast filled us up, ready for our days wandering around the medina (I agree with LLClondon's review that, "the yummy fig jam is to die for"). We pre-ordered our evening meal for our first night (tapas; lamb, prune and almond tagine; baked fruits with mascapone) and, although we had some fantastic food in Marrakech, this was by far our favourite meal.
Lisa, Michael and all their staff were very welcoming. Lisa's helpful map and advise on our first day made us feel at ease within the city. It was no trouble for Rashid (forgive me if the spelling is incorrect) to take my husband to get a pizza when we realised the restaurants in the city had shut unusually early one evening. The staff were also on hand to book and rearrange reservations to a selection of recommended good quality restaurants.
We were sad to leave Dar Charkia as we felt like we were leaving close friends, even family. We're definitely planning to return.

First, don't let the conflicts occurring in other countries in North Africa deter you from visiting Morocco. We felt , and were, perfectly safe during our recent trip to this wonderful country.

Second, we can't speak highly enough of riad Dar Charkia: it truly is an oasis in the heart of Marrakech.

Even before we set off on our trip, owner Lisa promptly answered the various questions we fired off to her via email. For example, because we were unsure about train and bus connections between Casablanca (the main point of entry by air to Morocco) and Marrakech, Lisa offered to organize a driver to pick us up in Casablanca and take us by car to Marrakech. This three hour trip cost us about US$120 and was well worth the money.

We arrived in Marrakech just after night fall, and our driver dropped us off in the neighbourhood in which riad Dar Charkia is located. He couldn't take us directly to the door because -- as with most riads -- Dar Charkia is located down a series of quite narrow, high-walled alley ways.

However, our driver had phoned ahead to the riad to announce our arrival. Consequently, a staff member (Rachid) was there at the drop-off point to welcome us, to help with our baggage, and to lead us to Dar Charkia approximately five minutes away.

After 30 hours of travelling (don't ask!) and feeling utterly exhausted, we were guided by Rachid through a few short alleys, ushered through a sturdy wooden door into the riad, and welcomed into a serene and beautiful courtyard.

The tribulations of the journey and the hubbub of the city evaporated in a few seconds. All we could hear was the peaceful tinkling of a small fountain. The orange tree in the riad's courtyard was festooned with candle light. It was magic.

We slept well our first and every night thereafter Our room was wonderfully decorated; it was comfortable; it was clean; and it was well-appointed with bathroom supplies (including hair drier and bathrobes). It even was supplied with bottled water, a small container of sweets/candies, and a tagine containing dates and nuts.

The morning after we arrived, owner Lisa met with us and provided a detailed map of Marrakech. She pointed out the best cultural spots, the best eating places, where one could find a free/clean loo , and the best kinds of handiccrafts Marrakech has to offer. She also offered advice on how best to barter for items being sold in Marrakech's famous souks.

If you end up staying at riad Dar Charkia -- and if you consider eating lunch or dinner there -- we highly recommend the meals produced by cook Zahira: she is a marvel.

More generally, staff members " small" Samira, "big" Samira, Nadia, and Rachid are exceptionally attentive yet without being intrusive. Indeed, they stole our hearts.

Just back from a wonderful 5 days in Marrakech staying in the Dar Charkia....

The Riad is tucked away down a few narrow alleys in the maze of Marrakech (like they all seem to be) and approaching the unassuming entrance it is just impossible to imagine the beautiful and tranquil haven behind it, quite simply stunning....

Add to that the warm and genuine welcome from Lisa, Michael and the team and you have a perfect location... I rarely relax at first on holiday, but from the moment you step inside, it's pretty much impossible not to (and that's saying something bearing in mind the chaos of Marrakech outside)....

Great recommendations for trips and restaurants (as well as inside track advice on the guys in the souks..... thanks Lisa for the guidance on 'that road is closed, let me show you another route....' Happened a couple of times and I would have fallen for it without your guidance.... (oh and right price for a taxi - twice got quoted 100 Dirhams for a 20 Dirham trip :)) tks Lisa )

Definitely would recommend the Lotus Privilege for dinner, though not if you are on a budget - ok we had cocktails and a decent wine, but it was more expensive than a good restaurant in central London, but hard to beat for service and ambience.... El Fassia was fantastic for food and a little more reasonable, though all food and wine is pricy in Marrakech.

Don't miss eating at the Riad itself, obviously breakfast on the roof in hot sun was a fantastic treat (having left the rain and 6 degrees in London) despite the bees... But dinner was fantastic. There isn't a restaurant as such, but in a way it's better for it.... The food was wonderful and the casual style suits the Dar Charkia perfectly...

This was our first trip to Marrakech and it was an eye opener... The local people offer the warmest of welcomes, but then ask for a tip for helping.... Our guide round the Ouzoud waterfalls summed it up nicely "you can get really close to the monkeys and take photos and they don't even ask for 20 dirhams...."

But it is a very special city. Will we go back ? Absolutely without a shadow of doubt.....
