“Treated royally in a former Royal Palace”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 15, 2012

Thank you Brahim and staff for a truly wonderful stay at the Palais Donab. I do not believe the decor, service and gardens can be bettered by any other Riad in central Marakesh. We stayed for three nights and could not find fault with the establishment. How nice it was to be treated like royalty in a Riad that was formerly a Royal Palace

Room Tip: Choose the Yasmin suite for large balcony and interesting room

We had some vague idea of Riads in Marrakech, we have seen plenty of them on Internet, heard different stories, got suspicious with plenty of fantastic reviews on all Riads in Marrakech. Suspicion got confirmed directly by people from Marrakech - apparently there are plenty of Riads, restaurants in Marrakech who writes those fantastic reviews themselves (or ask someone to write it). We have visited a few well noted, and I can tell you that should be careful reading reviews of Riads in Marrakech!

So although Riad or more precisely Palais Dar Donab is not even between first 100 Riads in Marrakech (Probably because they did not go into this dirty game of fake reviews), staying there with my wife was probably one of the best experience we had during all our travels over the years.

First, it's well located, very close to the taxi or main road, still on the pretty wide, safe, clean street inside Medina, still just a few meters from souq and 10 min walk from Djema el fnaa square.
Second, it's fantastically decorated in traditional Moroccan style, with huge patio, swimming pool big enough to have even little impression of swimming, trees inside, sunny - so you can stay next to to swimming pool with sun / or shade of trees depending on your choice for basically full day. Just one more reassurance that it was not only our impression - first there were couple of exterior visitors to the patio and swimming pool every day (they pay 150 MAD for entrance)' but never at the expense of those staying in Riad, and every day we have seen some tourist, some of them with local guides entering to take pictures of patio and decoration inside..... Need to add something on top?!

There are only few suites and 1 room. We stayed in the room, although it's smallest in Riad, it was really spacious, with bathtub, TV, AC, with even 1 really tiny extra room with 1 bad where you can actually put all the mess, luggages to keep them out of sight :-)
There is direct access to rooftop terrace from the room (actually it's situated directly on the terrace with some chairs, beds to relax and enjoy sun, or simply birds singing in the evening).
The room was clean, not the newest furnishing but with some charm, decorated with local original paintings, the only - but really only small inconvenience were couple of ants in our room.

Breakfast is nice, served inside or outside, freshly squeezed orange juice, yoghurt, pancakes, viennoiserie, excellent local honey, jams, sometimes fruits.

The service is really great, helpful, not intrusive, really honest. Everyday cleaning beds and charis next to swimming pool, full attention and full energy even if last night we were the only residents and there were still all 5 or so staff members doing everything needed as any other day. Well true, this day we felt like real pashas or kings :-)) Honesty of staff was demonstrated the best directly first night, we asked them where to have dinner, and even if there was dinner served inside the Riad, they recommended us another restaurant, which was excellent - Maison Arabe 5 min walk away. (we tried restaurant inside Dar Donab last night, pretty good, though not excellent food ).

You will not be disappointed in this Palais, even if they don't have 300+ reviews all of them with 5 stars but with vast majority written by reviewers with 1-2 reviews...........

Room Tip: There is 1 room and rest are suites, but even in the "smallest" room you will feel well an...

Riad Dar Donab is actually a palace, means bigger than the usual Riad in the Souks. It offers exactly what you expect and dream of when you travel to Marrakech. I cant praise enough this Riad, the pool, service, staff....my husband and i had a wonderful time and Brahim, the manager makes you feel very special. The whole Riad is beautiful retored with o much love to detail. Every room is excellent and clean, the pool is an extra treat as it is a big one. We had even our own secluded sun terrace and could breakfast on it as well. The restaurant is amazing and the tajines are lovely! Dar donab offers a peaceful haven in the Souks where you can ret and relax! Not to far away is a lovely Spa where the reception will help you to book in. All staff speak very good english and are amazingly friendly and well trained. Another advantage you can access it via car, means your luggage can be easily transported, which is not always given when you book a Riad in the Souks. I cant believe that anyone does not like this Riad! Due to my job as journalist i travel a lot and Dar Donab was one if the most nicest and luxury Boutique Hotels with a speial flair we have been. Strongly recommended!

Room Tip: There is one very privately with its own terrace more away from the others, very good for couples!

We stayed here for 3 nights, it's whole ambience is one of luxury and how life should be.... On reading other people's reviews, one said the place was tired ... Yes the place in some parts seemed dated, but that's what gave it the character and the timeless elegance . There are I am sure plenty of places to stay in arracesh that are opulence and very chic, but if you want a quiet luxury you will be hard fessed to beat this jem
The service was quiet and un assuming. I personally do not like to be rushed during dinner. The tables are set around the pool and the twinkling lights add to the romantics among us. The plates were served hot ad the tangine of lamb was beautifully cooked.

Hussein with his smile spoke good English and his service was excellent.

Our room was room 2 which was beautiful, with a rage bed and no less than 3 sofa,s so plenty of room. A walk in dressing room with plentiful of hangling space and drawers.

This rhiad is walking distance to the big square and souk market, being inside the medina.

Wifi Internet meant I could keep in touch with home easily.

We sat during the afternoon around the pool with a bottle of wine and tapas. And strolled to the great plaza for the evenings.

I would recommend this place to those romantics among us, not for the clubbers, but those seeking quiet luxury.

Room Tip: All rooms seem suits we stayed in room 2 which was beautiful

We ate lunch at Dar Donab and viewed the rooms for some friends visiting. The rooms are very 1985, with old sofas and tattered bedspreads. The menu is very standard Moroccan (tagines, couscous, brochettes), and my tagine was chewy and overcooked. My wife's salad was a pile of sliced vegetables in a bland dressing. The manager was openly rude and dismissive. You can do a lot better for the price at places like Dar Les Cigognes, Riad El Cadi, Riad ZamZam.

We have just returned after spending 5 nights in the Yasmine suite at Dar Donab (probably the best of the 5 suites as it has its own balcony and privacy) - an absolutely superb experience. The room was large, cool and very comfortable, with a huge but somewhat dated bathroom. This suite has its own terrace with comfortable chairs and table surrounded by beautiful flowers and citrus trees. You also have direct access to the top roof with more sun loungers.
This small palace is beautiful; the architectural decor is fantastic with the most intricate detail in the tiles and mosaics. The gardens have loads of colour, lovely palms and the scent of orange blossom. The grounds like the house are really well maintained, not a weed in sight. The pool is not heated so at this time of year it was bit too cold. There are lots of sun loungers at ground level and, more privately, plenty on the roof level with large umbrellas and tables.
The staff were friendly, efficient and very helpful andthere was always someone around.
We found the restaurant menu a bit limited but the food was tasty and not expensive we ate in for most lunchtimes but went out to eat in the evenings.
This was a fabulous place to stay I would love to go back and have no hesitation in recommending it to anyone.

Room Tip: The Yasmine suite has space and privacy, the more expensive Royale suite is huge and magnificent but...
