Overall clean hotel, as there were four of us we were given two room's next to each other with a door joining both the room's, that the hotel staff unlocked for us this was rather helpful.

The problem was the constant noise from the construction of the hotel next door did get rather annoying at times, especially in the early hours of the morning.

The staff were helpful, but the breakfast was not to my liking.
Overall our stay was pleasant, and I do think it was value for money.

We stayed here for two nights with our tour group. The hotel is situated directly across from the opera house. Our room was medium size, with two narrow beds placed together. Only one of the three pillows supplied was satisfactory. The room contained a mini-fridge and safe. CNN was the only English-language television station available. There was no good reading light, but there were room-darkening draperies.

The bathroom was nice, with large towerls and a hair dryer. The tub had a hand-held shower, situated very low on the wall, so the best option for showering was in a sitting position. It took an inordinately long time to get hot water at about 6:30 a.m.

Breakfast was satisfactory.

The hotel also had a spa, which we didn't use. Prices for treatments seemed about average.

Have just returned from a seven night stay at Ryad Mogador Opera, was a bit anxious going after reading some of the reviews of the hotel on trip advisor. I went with two friends for a city break and we had a very pleasant stay. We picked the hotel because of its location, safe area and close to Ave Mohommad V, where there are some nice shops and restaurants (highly recommend Grand de la Poste for dinner, fab food and lovely staff, plus they serve alcohol!).
Our room was spacious, clean and had all the facilities we needed. The staff were always friendly to us, we had a problem with our safe when we arrived which was fixed immediently. Breakfast was good, consisted of cereals, eggs, pancakes, pastries, yogurts, cheese, tomato, coffee and juice, always plenty of it.
The swimming pool does have a building site beside it, not ideal but this didn't stop other guests from using it, (we never had time to use it).
I would recommend using the hotels spa and hamman, we had a lovely morning getting treatments, very cheap and the staff there were lovely.
The hotel does not serve alcohol, not unusual in Marrakesh.
This hotel may not be to UK four star standards but we did not pay four star prices. We got a cheap deal and felt we got very good value for money.

Well where do I start...

On our arrival we discovered that the lift didn't work, we were taken to level 'e' which doesn't exist, we then decided to walk up 4 flights of stairs rather than risk getting stuck in the lift. Another word of warning, the staircases do not have sufficient lighting, you will fall over if you don't take care. We were expecting to find an iron in our room - a basic necessity - we were shocked to discover that a so called 4 star hotel did not provide this facilities. We asked the hotel for an iron and were given a faulty one with the wires showing, we refused to except this as we didn't want to risk an electric shock. When we raised this issue the "electrician" or whoever he was attempted to fix the faulty iron by wrapping the wires in cello tape. In the end we just had to walk around with creased clothes. When we complained to the staff about the lack of iron they spoke about us in Arabic and laughed in our faces. We asked for help, they were not interested, the only time they were helpful is when we booked an excursion with them. They receptionist asked us to pay a deposit and refused to provide a receipt, when we asked for this she behaved as if this was a strange request and still refused to provide one. She told us that the driver would pick us up from the hotel at 9am and in fact he came at 10am, when we asked her for help, she told us to go away in an aggressive manner. This as obviously because she had already pocketed the income from us, before we paid she was a little more helpful. When we asked the manager for help he said "don't talk to me, I have heard bad stories about you" obviously all the staff had been discussing us, this is very unprofessional. We were also shocked to discover that the safe did not work. The door would not close, we complained about this and the "electrician" carried it away and came back with another one with an even worse one. Even though he knew we spoke no Arabic he then explained the issue in arabic and disappeared. We had to carry our belongings at all times. Beware, if more than 1 person requires a key, they'll give each of you a key but only 1 will work for a short time. We had to walk up and down 4 flights of stairs each time we needed to get in our room to get the key reactivated. When we asked about this the receptionist said he didn't know why this was happening and grinned in our face. Sleeping is meant to be the most comfortable part of the stay, however we found deadly pins in our bed covers, this was a very unsafe discovery. All TV fanatic please be advised that all channels are in arabic and french, the only English speaking channel is CNN. The room we stayed in was very noisy, you can hear the furniture being moved around in the rooms beside and above you at all hours of the day, this prevented me from having good night sleep. The beds were also very hard, my back still hurts.

2 of 5 stars Reviewed January 6, 2009

2 of us stayed here for 2 nights over the New Year as part of a tour of Morocco. Apparently the usual hotel was not available so we were put up here.

Our room was actually ok with pleasant decor & facilities. We had a main road facing room so traffic noise was a bit of an issue. However, I was really cross that on the second day no clean bath towels had been left by housekeeping who then refused to answer their phone extension. Reception was not interested & basically asked me to go away, they also refused to help book a taxi.

The saddest aspect was the hastily arranged New Years Eve dinner at a neighbouring hotel which was so mediocre & dull that it makes me cringe just thinking about it!! How this hotel warrants a 4 star rating is indeed puzzling.

On the plus side the porter was very helpful in flagging a taxi down & instructing the driver on how to find our medina Riad & getting a very good price, we even got a smile from him, so its not all bad!

On arrival it was evident they had messed up our booking by reserving 2 rooms instead of three. They claimed a third room was not available. We were asked to go to a newly opened sister hotel just 200 yards away, with matching facilities. Reluctantly we agreed, the less than helpful manager insisting this was the only option. The hotel, the Riad Mogador Guitez was indeed new. So new that it had no other residents, no breakfast facilities, hardly any staff and was surrounded by building sites occupied by howling dogs, traffic and the rail yard. It was more than half a mile away with nothing in the way of restaurants or other hotels anywhere near.

After a sleepless night we complained loudly and were allowed back in to the Opera. It seemed to have been a blatant attempt to get some residents in to an empty hotel.

The rooms we were given were excellent, decent sized and clean. (the one good point in this sorry tale).

However ,the "hot" breakfast buffet consisted of one tray of scrambled egg (smelling faintly of fish) and another tray containing hard boiled eggs. Otherwise it was all cold buffet.

You will wait an interminable time for a coffee in the foyer, served by a surley waiter who spends most of his time trying hard not to catch your eye and who will never bring you the same drink twice.
You will have to pay (80 Dirham) to use the indoor pool, despite being a resident.

The 'consierge' will hail you overpriced taxis (just go round the corner and hail one yourself, you'll get a much better deal) He will demand tips for doing very little and may try to rip you off by giving you a handful of change he insists is of equal value to the money he wants to swap it with. He relies on your unfamiliarity with the currency to make a profit.

And finally, whatever you do, do not be conned into letting them book a taxi to the airport. they will charge at least twice as much as the going rate (150 dirham instead of 75) and will insist you pay upfront.

Taxis are plentiful, even at 05:00hrs and the drivers who do not have to pay a backhander to the hotel staff are a friendly and basically honest bunch.

To sum up. Enjoy Marrakesh and it's people. It's a fantastic place but avoid this place if you can.
