“Dirty, empty riad”

We actually didn't end up staying at the Dar Naima after seeing the room and the lack of people (staff or otherwise) anywhere in the place.

We happened to arrive in Marrakech by bus during a taxi strike. Due to this, we decided to call Dar Naima and ask if it would be possible for them to send a car to pick us up at the Supratours station.

I was told by the woman on the phone that it would be no problem, she asked when our bus arrived (3pm, it was currently 11am) and told me a driver would be there to meet us and would be holding a sign with our name on it.

Our bus arrived at 2:40pm so we weren't concerned when we didn't see anyone waiting for us. But by 3:30pm, after numerous unanswered calls to the hotel, we realized no one was coming and had to get a ride in a work truck to the hotel.

Once there, a woman answered the door, we told her our name and she led us into the main courtyard. This place had obviously been a beautiful riad at one point in time, but currently it had a dry fountain in the middle and dead plants all around, spiderwebs in the corners.

After she called out to the owner a few times with no reply, she took us up to our room, said something to us in French very quickly and disappeared. Unfortunately we don't speak French and didn't have time to catch her to find out what she said.

After waiting a few minutes, not sure if she was coming back or not, we looked around a bit and never saw a soul in the whole place. We did find a second door leading into our room that led up the rooftop, the door was unlocked and we discovered the key we had did not fit.

We then started to notice more things, our room had a sitting area, when you sat on the sofa a cloud of dust errupted from it. Upon noticing this, we hit our hand to the bed and the same thing happened. Honestly, we were too scared to look under the bed covers, I hate to think what was there.

At this point we realized if we were going to enjoy our 3 night stay in Marrakech we would have to find new accommodation. We went to an internet cafe and called a couple of nearby riads until we found one with an available room.

We returned to Dar Naima, grabbed our bags and informed the same woman that had let us in that we would not be staying here. She went and got a young man who spoke English. We told him why we were not staying and he begged us to come in and talk to the Manager, the Manager apparently was too busy to come out to us, he said we had to go to her.

To make an even longer story short, we discovered they had no other guests in the hotel, but still tried to say we owed them for 2 nights because they couldn't book the room on such short notice. We said we would pay for 1 night and we did.

I would not recommend this riad to anyone. There are so many beautiful and well cared for Riads in Marrakech, I'm sure you could find one better.

“Nice Riad - but not certainly not luxury”

Dar Naima

We stayed fat the Dar Naima or 4 days from 2 Jan 07. It started by waiting 20 mins at the airport for the pickup who were late but they were friendly and took us right to the door of the Riad and helped with the luggage on the last leg of our journey (about 500 metres from where they parked).
The room, the Smahane, actually consisted of 3 small rooms, the bedroom was just larger than the bed. The bathroom shower didn't have any pressure and the bath was a brick/tile fountain-like thing that took over 30mins to fill. So no lovely hot showers or laying in a bath. And a small room to sit in. All clean, a bit dark though.
The owner never once said hello which I found unfriendly. Only the doorman who let us in/out of the Riad spoke to us in French. And warning, when we went to pay, with all bags packed and rushing to the airport, the owner said we had to pay about 5% extra if we paid by card! I thought this was illegal and would have liked to have been warned in advance. Not nice!
In the morning it was extremely cold where they serve a simple but nice continental breakfast with great coffee. The girl that served us had a bad cold (which we both got!) and when she dropped a bread roll onto the floor she quickly picked it up and without a thought put it back on our table with the other rolls. Yuch! They lit a fire but it didn't warm the room instead it totally filled the Riad with smoke and a strong burning odour. Not at all pleasant. Only on our last day did they put a fire guard in front of the fire and it seemed to stop the smoke but also alas the heat!
We needed help once to understand where we could park our car near the riad but the staff really couldn't help. I was annoyed to find that the owner had maps on the wall of her office when we paid.
All in all I wouldn't stay again. It is a lovely Riad but I didn't like the small rooms which don't look small in their website photos, absent unfriendly owner and the sting in the tail (%price hike for credit cards).
We stayed in a Hotel on the last night the Atlas ASNI for about £40/night and then I wished we stayed there the whole time. Staying in a Riad in the Medina is overly expensive for what you get and to me overrated. I think the Riad night be better in the summer. However, the Riad was pretty and gave us an interesting more authentic feeling, was great being near the Souks and the Jemna El FNA square. But the Atlas Hotel was a short walk away and definitely worth it. Getting out of the hussle and hassle was while worth it.

“Genuinely friendly service”

Dar Naima

Like many of the city's riads, Dar Naima's a devil to find. You'll probably end up employing one of the local kids to help you out. There are no shortage of those, though. Once you find it, Dar Naima's an absolute treasure. We were greeted by an elderly Marrakchi, who spoke not a word of English - but then that's half the fun.

The riad is full of Moroccan magic, especially if you arrive at night. A little dog eared perhaps, and our room smelled slightly musty, but it's brimming over with atmosphere. Every question we asked or problem we had (not that there were many) was greeted with an enthusiastic smile, and a genuine willingness to help. We were made to feel really welcome, and not at all like outsiders.

Highly recommended for those wanting to throw themselves whole-heartedly into Marrakech.
