“Perfect place to explore a fantastic city!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 8, 2013

Riad Amssaffah was the ideal place to stay. When we arrived outside we were dubious of the choice we had made but once inside we were pleasantly surprised with the grand size of the Riad. We were welcomed warmly served local mint tea and biscuits. We had asked the Riad staff to organise the transfer and was arranged without any hassle.

The decor of the Riad was traditional Morrocon and very beautiful indeed. Plenty of space for communal use, again tastefully decorated. We booked a standard room for a family of three and there was ample room. The room was large enough to accommodate us all. The main bed was very large and comfortable as was the smaller single. We were provided with all the amenities you would expect in top class hotel.

The whole staff team were very helpful and friendly and available 24 hours a day. As previous reviews have stated Fatima the head of reception was fantastic and so warm and friendly. She was full of local knowledge, gave us tips on where to go, what there is to see and do and organised excursions for us at a great price.

Unfortunately I got ill whilst I was out there and Fatima and her staff went out of their way to get me medication and look after me, this made the illness a little bearable.

Our trip was what it was because of where we stayed and the central location. If I go back to morocco I would not consider staying anywhere else. I can not rate this place enough, fantastic place to stay.

This riad is a true oasis of calm! It's tucked away under an arch in the centre of complete chaos ! Fatima the receptionist is the loveliest person ever and cannot do any more for you ! The food was delicious too but a little pricey compared to what u get out but comes in nice big portion sizes ! The room itself was very dark as there was no outside window so therefore no natural light. The bathroom was very basic and the light switch was broken and had to be punched to turn it on and the shower was very bare and took a while to regulate temperature. The bed was huge but like a slab of concrete ! We even had a few bugs one night. The pool was nice enough to put your feet in and sit on edge but wouldn't get in 1 because its in the middle of the courtyard so everyone is walking past you and some perv and 2 it wasn't very clean. The porter Mohammed was a legend he couldn't do enough for us and even walked us to the local hammam which Fatima recommended to us which was absolutely fantastic ! Defo go there ! On the last day we noticed some money had gone missing from both our suitcases which was disappointing but Fatima was so sorry and upset she gave us a free lunch and they had stolen 500 dirums from us so we had no money for lunch or a tip which we would have happily given. All in all it's a 15 walk to the square and 10 mins to the souks if you don't get lost and follow Fatima's map! It's so peaceful and is beautiful. It needs some tlc and some security as there are no safes in the room unless you ask which we were only told once we were robbed and if you want your room cleaned you leave your key at the reception and if nobody is around it just sits there which anyone coil take ! All in all it's cheap and cheerful and good if your planning on being out all day or just sitting around in the sun on the roof terrace or by the pool

Unfortunately my sister and I were very disappointed with this Riad. We stayed for a long weekend in May 2013.

The location is good, right in the centre of the souks. The main courtyard areas were lovely, and for a inexpensive break you get what you pay for.
Breakfast was good. But that is as far as it gets.

The roof terrace could be lovely for sunbathing, but it was also a dumping ground and in need of a good tidy up. The bar was actually a rubbish storage area!

The room was fine at first look, but then as bits kept on falling off and the hotel staff didn't seem to interested to fix things we were increasingly frustrated during our stay.

The reception staff were useless I'm sorry to say. We had to steal hangers, toilet paper and towels from another room and cause a big complaint to get our room fixed and cleaned. (they didnt tell us that you have to leave your key in reception in order to get the room cleaned as there is no master key)

If the hotel received some TLC and the staff were trained to look after the customers then it could be really lovely.

Only one member of staff (the doorman / breakfast server) was truly good to us, so at least he received a good tip!

Room Tip: leave your key at reception if you want your room serviced.

Having read various reviews on this Riad, I started to doubt my choice. It was my partner's 40th Birthday and I wanted to mark the ocassion and I was not disappointed with the Amssaffah! The location is perfect, right in the thick of things but once behind the grand wooden doors, it was like an oasis, perfectly quiet and peaceful. The rooms were large and comfortable, as was the bed! Typically, the plumbing left something to be desired but certainly was not a deal breaker! The staff (Fatima, Aziz and Mohammed) were wonderful and helped me arrange a lovely surprise breakfast for my partner's b/day. We also arranged a day trip to the mountains through the hotel and it could not have been better planned. The dinner, wow, better than some of the restaurants we went to in the Jamaa el Fna. In all, would absolutely and without doubt, recommend this lovely Riad and I cannot wait to return.

This is definitely an Hotel with old world charm and in the rushed life we all lead now it has a peace all of it's own. Forget the concrete blocks found in every city in the world and enjoy this completely different place to stay with very obliging staff (especially Fatimah, who runs the place) and with beautiful architecture it is very relaxing to sit and enjoy a drink after a hard days sightseeing.
The room my wife and I had was quite basic and the bathroom was not the best I have ever had but for a long weekend it was fine. The sheets were changed every day and the room was always kept very clean. Breakfast was mainly bread with jams and butter with either pancakes or boiled eggs and could be classified as adequate.
Riad Amssaffah is fantastic but when you go through the front door you end up in a completely different place with the dust and bustle of the souks all around and the excitement really grabs. From the Hotel it takes about 15/20 minutes to reach the main square but that walk through the souks is always different and entertaining.
It is about a seven minute walk to the hotel from where the transfer bus drops you off and in the heat that could be daunting to some although I found it fascinating.
It is perhaps not for everyone although I found the whole experience very uplifting and would tell all my friends about it.

This riad is a very ornate, authentic Morrocan guesthouse. The communal areas were elaborately decorated and fitted with Morrocan style fittings and fixtures, which made for a good chill out area and meeting place. The communal areas were the only places we found to escape the intense heat of Morroco. The pool is decorative at best but you definitely would not swim in it!
The staff in the most part were really helpful, especially Aziz who is jack of all trades and always a source of a smile.
The breakfast was passable - yogurts, bread, spreads and jams, coffee, orange juice and some random cooked item (croissant, pancake etc).
The room was a major let down - the mattress sagged a lot in the middle which meant for an uncomfortable nights sleep. The air conditioning unit did not work which meant that the room was permanently hot, even during the night. There was a hole in the wall stuffed with a tissue, which after further examination turned out to be hiding a bare wire! The doors and windows were old and poorly fitting and so didn't give a sense of security. The bathroom was ok and cleaned each day - the light above the mirror was gaffa taped to the wall though!

Location wise, the riad is ideal if you want to be in the middle of all the hustle and bustle. It is literally yards away from the main souks. The downside to this is that you can't leave the hotel without getting confronted by the locals which we found really tiring after 5 days.
This Riad is so central that you have to walk the last 10 minutes to get there as only bikes and mopeds can get down the narrow streets.

Personally we would not return to the Riad, we did enjoy aspects of it and appreciate it could be really nice but it lacked too many comforts that we look for in a holiday.
