My partner and I stayed at Riad Jonan as the first stage of our driving holiday across the south of Marrakesh and wow...what a great start!
Howard (& his delightful little dog Kiko) and his staff were welcoming, friendly and so knowledgeable with some excellent recommendations on places to visit, eat, car hire...you name it...nothing was too much trouble...(n.b Kiko didn't actually do any advising but was great entertainment and added charm/character to the already beautiful Riad)
We were greeted at the airport by our very friendly taxi driver and driven through a maze of people, scooters, donkeys, shops and side eateries all spilling their wears onto the street...immediately the hustle and bustle of Marrakesh was upon us (and I too would say without a doubt, that if you want to experience the "true" Marrakesh then you must stay in the Medina)...then, pulling up to a stop...you can't help but think that the driver must surely be mistaken...how can this possibly be the right place as it's just a little doorway in an alley...the door is opened and you are greeted by Howards lovely staff, who show their hospitality immediately by bringing you some eagerly accepted mint tea with tiny Moroccan pastries in the beautiful, tranquil setting that is Riad Jonan.
I could talk forever about the attention to detail and personal touches that are sprinkled throughout but will leave that for you to discover for yourself...it is a delightful place to stay in a perfect location, ideal if you want to be in the heart of the action!
We had the best breakfast ever at Riad Jonan...if you like yogurt then you simply must sample their homemade version with fresh fruit for breakfast...it is amazing!
With regard to Marrakesh itself, I was very surprised at how expensive or high "bidding" starts in the local shops and souks...be prepared...have a figure in mind that you would be prepared to pay (realistic)...and stick to your guns...if you're realistic then the seller will soon come chasing after you to "close the deal!"
...also, one final tip from me - negotiate the price with your taxi before you get in (as they all seemed to claim that their meter was broken!)...make sure that you have the exact money too otherwise you'll be a victim of the "I have no change" routine!
All in all a fantastic holiday - would definitely go back and without any hesitation, would recommend Riad Jonan! Thank you Howard!
