“One of Marrakech's best hidden riads”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 25, 2009

My partner and I were travelling back from Agadir and looking for somewhere to stay in the final weekend of Ramadan. After going through every place from best to worst in the Lonely Planet, one the hostels recommended "Dar el Souk". After speaking to the lovely owner Madeline (fluent in English and French) she offered us a discount and said that we would absolutely love it there. She was not wrong - each room is individually decorated, the staff are so friendly and useful and you will not find anywhere else as unique hidden as this. The perfect place to stay in our final weekend in Morocco.

We had a three day break in Marrakech travelling from Agadir in the middle of our two week holiday. The August heat is almost unbearable and Dar el Souk gave us the perfect retreat from the hustle and bustle of the main square and souks. The only fault I could find was the water pressure. Our shower went from scalding hot to freezing cold in waves making it almost impossible to shower. That said, it was a super break, very friendly and helpful staff and we would most definately return there.

This Riad is so beautiful... it looks just like the pictures from its website.

There was some confusion our first day there, we called Amanda upon arriving at the airport since we were flying standby and weren't positive whether we would get on the flight or not. Normally they would have had someone waiting, but in this case she said just to wait outside at arrivals. about 15 minutes later (which is how long she said it would take) a man pulls up in a taxi and walks over to us and said something that we believed to be Dar Souk so we got in and he dropped us off at the entrance to a small, busy alley and told us to use this "guide" to get to our riad. We followed the guy to our riad and then he DEMANDED 20 dirhams from each of us, there were 4 of us. We thought this was ridiculous because nobody had told us we needed to do this, so after arguing with him for 5 minutes we finally gave him 30 dirhams to make him go away.
The next day we were able to speak to Madeleine over breakfast and she made it sound like that's the way it's always done, which frustrated us because after reading so much on Marrakech we knew that people are out to get all the money out of you that they can, so it would have been nice if she had told us this PRIOR to our arrival. Nevertheless, that is the only bad thing I can say about it.

The one tip I would suggest is NOT going in August or, if you really want to, get a room that has ac... we got the only rooms at the riad w/out ac... we basically didn't sleep.

One more great thing to know and think about: if you like to drink this riad provides beer/wine for purchase... which you won't find ANYWHERE in Marrakech. Riad's have to have a special license to sell it, which costs a lot of money, and I've been told that if the riad is owned by Muslims they for sure wont have liquor to purchase. My friends and I all felt it was nice to just be able to have a glass of wine and relax up on the terrace in the solitude of the riad after a crazy day walking through the souks!

The breakfast here was my favorite part, they give you so much and it's delicious!
All in all I would rate it an 8 out of 10!

We have just returned from a wonderful 4 day trip to this riad and cannot find fault with it in any way.
The staff were friendly and helpful and it is in a perfect setting, just a short stroll from the main square and the souks. We were met at the airport by a taxi driver as arranged by the riad and he drove us to meet a 'chariot driver' in a square. We paid the taxi driver (100Dh) and the riad paid the charioteer (20Dh) as we had no small currency notes.
Madi, the English owner, welcomed us with mint tea and biscuits and gave us a map and a useful talk about the city.
The riad has many sitting areas and also a roof terrace where we ate wonderful breakfasts each day and sat in the sunshine. We also arranged to eat an evening meal in the riad and had a really lovely meal in a beautiful dining room.
We walked many miles in the 4 days and saw some amazing sights. The museums are all cheap (generally about 10Dh) and the areas around the tanneries and the Sadaain tombs are relatively free of tourists. We ate in the main square one night and were disappointed by the experience and cost. We also ate at the Argana restaurant on the square and had a very good meal there. The souks off the main square were fascinating and we bought some things there after haggling, but the souks out of the square were far more interesting and we spent many hours wandering around them.

From the moment we arrived to be greeted by ex-pat Madeline, it was set to be an amazing holiday. Never before has anyone sat down with us upon check-in and given us the ins and outs of the city - practial info on where to eat, what to visit, where to get your massage, what times to visit things. Simply amazing.
The terrace room we had was a joy, a spacious suite with beautiful moroccan decor and lovely details like local handmade lamps, curtain ties and furnishings.
Breakfast was brought up every morning for us to eat on our terrace, all the girls were lovely, nothing was too much to ask of them. The Riad has a large roof terrace for relaxing in the sunshine, completed with the girls bringing you water, wine or the traditional mint tea to enjoy.
The location was fantastic, very central and we always felt safe walking through the lit backstreets late at night to return after a day spent lost in the souks.
Madeline even organised a personal trek into the Atlas mountains for us which was incredible and very reasonably priced.
We are already planning our trip back to this incredible find.

Many thanks Madeline, for your friendliness, hospitality and in making Marrakech a place we can't wait to come back to.

I have just celebrated my 50th in this beautiful riad, and a totally wonderful time was had by all!
Madeleine is a lovely character, helpful, amusing, fantastically laid back and not in the least perturbed by our somewhat noisy partying at times!
The staff are all wonderful, the food is plentiful and very good too!
The rooms are beautiful and the whole weekend was just the most fabulous experience!!
I would recommend Dar El Souk wholeheartedly!!!
And to top everything off, I was provided with a chariot ride to the taxi at the end of our stay!
Thank you Madeleine... we loved our stay and will be back again!

A group of 12 of us went for a friend's birthday to Marrakech, it was my first time in the city and the hotel arranged the transport from the airport to the hotel and even arranged the baggage handlers from the taxi to the hotel door. They had sent us tips and an up date on the weather before going, so we were not caught out by the rain!
We found the hotel to be clean, well decorated and very homely when we arrived and throughout our long weekend there. The staff could not have done more for us, fixing tea, arranging taxis & restaurants and also getting in a stock of good wines for the birthday meal. Really well done.
The owner Maddie gave us a good introduction on what to see in the city and places to go on our arrival which really helped.
It was a great stay and if i was going back to the city i would stay there again without a moments hesitation.
