Just returned from a holiday staying at La Medina. Two adults and one 14 year old boy. We had a great time and all loved our stay at La Medina. There are some negative reviews on this site from last year but for us everything was good. I suspect those that were unhappy thought they would get a standard club med. This one is a little different.... but lovely all the same. There are some caveats that might not appeal to you:-
It isn't a huge campus club. They have a pool, table tennis, fun stuff ant night but for the big stuff - tennis, golf achery etc you travel to their sister club. For us this was no problem at all. Club med run a private bus every half hour or so to their huge prestigeous club La Palmerie. It only takes about 15 mins. Once there you are treated as if you are staying there. Meals, sports, Bars activities. Frankly this was the bargain of the century for us. Maybe if you had several smaller children it could be a bit of hassle.
The food at La Medina is more like a tradditional restaurant with table service. This is actually great. Starters and deserts are still buffet style, but the main is a choice from three special dishes. Less choice but boy were they good. Small children might not like them but the starter part of the buffet always includes some "safe" choices like a pasta/pizza etc. If you prefer the traditional huge buffet spread that is available at La Palmerie.
La Palmerie is spectacular. Beautiful club, lovely facilities. Special call out for Karima, Lou Lou and Said who run the tennis. Made my holiday special.
Where La Medina really comes into it's own is in the evening. It sits literally right on the main market square which goes from quiet stilness during the day to an utter madhouse during the evening. On the first night I asked what they were celebrating before realizing this is the standard every night. So you can have your dinner, and then go for a stroll around old Marrakech.
The hotel is lovely. The rooms do look a little like thay haven't been touched for thirty years which I saw upset a few people. I thought they were charming. All coloured tiles and wood and copper. The rooms have all mod cons, including TV (important if you are 14).
The bars were great. A very large comfortable quiet one all soft furnishings amd Morrocan nik naks on the ground floor. (It has good free WiFi). Then on the roof there is a velvet tented affair that is also used for the parties. All you need is a Hooka pipe and Joanna Lumley !
The staff were all great from manager Joel all the way through. Quite a few of the GO's live there also, As ever learn a few words of Morrocan and you will be looked after all week..
La Medina is different from most other club meds but lovely all the same. It cost us a lot less to stay there than it would have done at La Palmerie and as such it was great value. Would definitely like to go back to this one some day.
Thanks GO's.
