“First time at a Club Med”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 28, 2012

This was our first time at a Club Med. We are a couple in our early 50's my husband is blind and well travelled. It was our first trip to Morocco. If I hadn't had a really bad chest infection things would/could have been better.

We went end of Feb 2012 and stayed for one week.

Positives: Food was excellent, drinks and wine were excellent, and location excellent. Some of the staff bent over backwards to help us out.

There were niggly bits that annoyed us but for 3 stars we wont dwell.

The room wasn't practical for someone visually impaired but that wouldn't effect everyone.

We don't speak French ( I speak Spanish, English and Swedish) so that didn't help. I would take a phrase book the next time and maybe study a bit before we went.

We did enjoy our selves and the Moroccans are some of the nicest people I have ever met. Would I go back? Yes. We have practical problems that would be better sorted at a more specialised hotel for us but it didn't detract from the experience.

It's a great base for the newbie explorer. We met lots of nice people. Got a taste for Morocco. We would go back.

Room Tip: if you don't like the first one ask to change but I think they are all the same

“Four hours from London”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 23, 2012

Just four hours from London and you will enter the heavy wooden gaurded doors into a tranquil oasis, booking in is no problem to the friendly staff. You will be taken to your room through the pleasant walkways so cooling in the summer months with tinkling water fountains and excellent well tended garden areas.
All of the rooms i have stayed at here are designed in a traditional Moroccan fashion with the usual tiled floors, mozaic wash and shower area but all looking out onto a garden from the shuttered window.
Take breakfast on the restaurant patio area, cuisine is available to suit any palate, and any nationality.
Step outside the complex and you are directly at the Jma el Fna, horse drawn carriages the bustle of the souks, await exploration. At nightfall view the square from the wonderful advantage point "La Medina" has over the whole area.
An excellent stocked and comfortable bar area with open log fires for those cooler winter evenings. As an all inclusive package here, coffee, ( snacks pre lunch and Dinner ) and drinks are available all day.
The pool area in summer is however quite cool being shaded by the large trees surrounding the site but if you like sun pop up to the terrace or jump on the free shuttle to La Palmeraie where there are many open spaces and pools to lounge around.
From my last visit here I understand that Club Med are going to renovate La Medina during 2012. Here's hoping they do not change its traditional, charming and peaceful atmosphere too much.

Room Tip: Single's, go for a "club room single occupancy" rather than a "single club room&q...

“unbeatable location & friendly staff”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 30, 2012

Together with my parents (aged 72 and 65), my husband and I stayed at La Medina for 10 days at the beginning of January. We chose it for the location and because our travel agent explained the reciprocal use of Club Med La Palmeraie, the 4-star resort located a short shuttle-ride away. We probably would not have gone with La Medina if it weren't for the option of spending time at La Palmeraie - I would rate this as a high selling point if you're considering staying here.

In any case, as other guests have mentioned: the resort is definitely a 3-star in every way, but the location cannot be beat. You're right in the heart of everything in Marrakesh, yet the noise and chaos drops away completely when you pass through the walls of the Club Med. Based on recommendations from this site, we asked for quiet rooms but were given them anyway: 125 and 126. Didn't hear anything other than chirping birds and early-morning call to prayer. Room cleanliness was not fantastic - fairly clean on arrival but nothing more than a basic sweep and change of garbage cans each day. I complained to front desk twice but did not note an improvement in service.

The Club Med formula was perfect for us, being a group of diverse ages, interests and habits - i.e. my parents were up for an early breakfast and weren't bothered at all when we would scamper in at 10am for a cup of coffee and bit of fruit. Meals were good and food was plentiful - not the amazing selection as there was at the Palmeraie, but the service was MUCH friendlier and we got to know the staff fairly well. The Pameraie staff were quite sullen and not particularly helpful. One thing to note is that guests at La Medina can reserve meals at their 5-star restaurant at the Palmeraie in advance - we didn't find that out until almost the last day and it was too late.

The on-site hammam was a great bonus and we also splurged for two massages each. We checked out the hammam at the Palmeraie and actually preferred the one at La Medina. Pameraie was an excellent location to kill a few days, do all sports & activities and splurge on a fantastic meal or two. Free shuttle leaves hourly from La Medina.

All in all: good for a mixed group but I'm not sure it I'd recommend it without use of the 4-star Palmeraie nearby.

Room Tip: Do make a point of talking to front desk if you're not satisfied with cleanliness. Our rooms (1...

“It's all gone downhill”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed November 21, 2011

I have stayed in this club med before and quite enjoyed it. That was a few years ago and in the summer. This time it was cold so facilities like the pool were out of bounds and that had made the stay enjoyable the last time. The whole resort is starting to look really tired. On arrival three staff seemed like they had nothing to do but it still took them some time to acknowledge our arrival and check us in. We were offered some dates during the check in process. We had two single rooms, they looked much like they had looked years back but now look dated and not at all contemporary even a bit dark. What really surprised me most was how the standard of the food had dropped drastically. The food was awful, cheap cuts of meat served luke warm. The only decent meal was breakfast which was eggs with baguette.

We decided to have lunch one day at La Palmeraie and what a mistake that was, the food was even worse, infact it was just shockingly bad, cold – So awful I just couldn’t eat it.

I get the impression that Club Med has stopped investing in some of their properties or maybe stopped investing in the off season. Wild horses wouldn’t drag me back to either of these properties.

Dear Customer,

We would like to thank you for taking the time to put your comments on Trip Advisor regarding your holiday experience at Marrakech La Medina Club Med Resort.

For your information, the above resort is rated 3 Tridents in our brochure and therefore, it would not offer the same overall standard of comfort, quality of service, food and facilities available as part of the Club Med package than our 4 or 5 Tridents Resorts.

We were however sorry to note your disappointment with regards to the standards of accommodation and catering. We would like to offer you our sincerest apologies for the inconvenience caused to you as a result. Rest assured that Club Med has not stopped investing in any properties as we are always doing our utmost to maintain our standards as required by our system of rating.

As far as the attitude of our staff on site is concerned, we were sorry to read that you found our staff at Reception to be rude and unhelpful. I can assure you that Club Med does certainly not condone such behaviour from members of staff and that this kind of attitude is just the antithesis of what Club Med staff should personify i.e kindness, generosity and sense of service.

I hope that despite your misgivings regarding your stay at the above resort we will have the opportunity to restore your faith in our company by welcoming you again in one of our resorts in the not too distant future.

Kind regards,

Your Club Med UK team

“Ab Fab !”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 1, 2011

Just returned from a holiday staying at La Medina. Two adults and one 14 year old boy. We had a great time and all loved our stay at La Medina. There are some negative reviews on this site from last year but for us everything was good. I suspect those that were unhappy thought they would get a standard club med. This one is a little different.... but lovely all the same. There are some caveats that might not appeal to you:-

It isn't a huge campus club. They have a pool, table tennis, fun stuff ant night but for the big stuff - tennis, golf achery etc you travel to their sister club. For us this was no problem at all. Club med run a private bus every half hour or so to their huge prestigeous club La Palmerie. It only takes about 15 mins. Once there you are treated as if you are staying there. Meals, sports, Bars activities. Frankly this was the bargain of the century for us. Maybe if you had several smaller children it could be a bit of hassle.

The food at La Medina is more like a tradditional restaurant with table service. This is actually great. Starters and deserts are still buffet style, but the main is a choice from three special dishes. Less choice but boy were they good. Small children might not like them but the starter part of the buffet always includes some "safe" choices like a pasta/pizza etc. If you prefer the traditional huge buffet spread that is available at La Palmerie.

La Palmerie is spectacular. Beautiful club, lovely facilities. Special call out for Karima, Lou Lou and Said who run the tennis. Made my holiday special.

Where La Medina really comes into it's own is in the evening. It sits literally right on the main market square which goes from quiet stilness during the day to an utter madhouse during the evening. On the first night I asked what they were celebrating before realizing this is the standard every night. So you can have your dinner, and then go for a stroll around old Marrakech.

The hotel is lovely. The rooms do look a little like thay haven't been touched for thirty years which I saw upset a few people. I thought they were charming. All coloured tiles and wood and copper. The rooms have all mod cons, including TV (important if you are 14).

The bars were great. A very large comfortable quiet one all soft furnishings amd Morrocan nik naks on the ground floor. (It has good free WiFi). Then on the roof there is a velvet tented affair that is also used for the parties. All you need is a Hooka pipe and Joanna Lumley !

The staff were all great from manager Joel all the way through. Quite a few of the GO's live there also, As ever learn a few words of Morrocan and you will be looked after all week..

La Medina is different from most other club meds but lovely all the same. It cost us a lot less to stay there than it would have done at La Palmerie and as such it was great value. Would definitely like to go back to this one some day.

Thanks GO's.

Room Tip: People mention the noise and smell from the horse drawn carriages outside the hotel. If you have a r...
