Apparently all good things come to those who wait and in this instance must also apply to those who walk around in circles trying to find Riad 72.After some false starts from 'helpful" locals we were in no doubt as to why the maze of alleys would in years bygone have confused would be invaders into moving on to an easier place to ransack.Close to exasperation and exhaustion we finally got some directions that worked.Once we had found it we never had any problems finding our way back.
What a beautiful sanctuary and what fantastic staff. So helpful, caring and utterly charming. They all worked so well as a team to make our stay so memorable.
This was our last place to stay in Marrakesh having stayed 4 nights at La Mamounia and 3 nights at El Fenn. Both the places were exceptional but Riad 72 just had a simple yet elegant charm and serenity to it.
The internal central courtyard is tastefully decorated with a Moroccan influence and Italian eye for style. We sat and enjoyed a very refreshing and by this time necessary, bottle of chilled water and cool hand towels whilst we checked in.We had left our luggage at El Fenn and the staff at Riad 72 arranged for it to be collected and delivered to our room.
Our room was a loft style room and you need to be reasonably sure of foot to climb the stairs that don't hav handrails. The bed was firm but comfortable. The bathroom well proportioned and functional but a bit light on for storing toiletries.Everything was very clean.Airconditioning was quiet and effective.
The roof top terrace ,whilst not as expansive as El Fenns' ,was still a very enjoyable spot to be.There was a very small plunge pool but we didn't take the plunge.
Breakfast and dinner can be taken on the terrace and we did both.Breakfast had the standard fare which included delicious croissants , baguettes ,fresh orange juice.
Dinner was absolutely magnificent on the two occasions we dined in.We had the terrace to ourselves on both occasions.A beautiful old lady prepares the meal and you can request you favourite Moroccan dishes or leave it to her to design a 3 or more course dinner. The kitchen is in a room off the courtyard and you can see your meal being prepared from mid afternoon.Like everything else, the kitchen is spotless. It was so memorable being on the terrace as the sunset commenced and the enchanting evening prayer calls began resonating from the various towers within our view.It is worth staying just to enjoy this experience of quintessential Moroccan cooking, sights and sounds.
We wanted to have a hit of golf and the staff booked us in at Royal Marrakech Golf Course and arranged for a driver to take us there and back with a bit of a sightseeing tour on the return.
We liked some of the linens and decorations at the Riad so much that we asked the staff if they could be bought locally.Fortunately they could and within a short walk we were taken to an amazing 3 storey Aladdins Cave stocked with furniture, rugs, lights, cooking utensils, wall hangings and more.It was not your typical tourist trap.It was not signposted and unless you knew what was behind the non descript solid wooden front doors you would have no reason to enter.Fortunately we were shown inside without having to utter"open Sesame".Inside the emporium were mainly locals .We bought a few things but would love to have had the luggage space to buy more.Hopefully we will get the chance to do so one day.
Within the riad there is a small hammam. My wife enjoyed the hammam whilst i had a massage. The massage was pretty standard but my wife thought the hammam was an amazing experience . Whilst the surrounds may not have been as opulent as the hammam she enjoyed at La Mamounia ,the overall treatment was superior and more authentic.
Would certainly not hesitate recommending Riad 72 and hope to return one day.Although the labyrinth of souks are within a couple of hundred metres which is great,it was fantastic to be able to return to serenity from the hectic hustle and bustle of the souk and El Fna.
