“Exhilarating feeling of escape and splendid isolation”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 28, 2012

I have stayed at this riad twice and can only say good things about the personnel (Adil and Mohamed in front-of-house and Yamna in the kitchen), the location, it's food and architecture. There can surely be no more pleasant place to go after a hot day in the streets of Marrakech than the rooftop terrace and be served mint tea and Moroccan patisseries while sprawled out on cushions in the shade afforded by the canopy. The romance of discovering the place hidden away in the depths of the Medina left me with an exhilarating feeling of escape and splendid isolation. I will return.

I've been in Marrakech for few days with a group of friends, notwithstanding the lenght of our trip i really liked this Riad. It is quiet and very comfortable. At the same moment it is also close to the basic point of interest of the City.
During my stay I found a kind welcome and a gentle service .
People working in the riad are always ready to help and eager to answer to your requests.
Even if the location hinders to reach the accomodation by car, they are well organized with the transportation.
The first impact with the centre of the city and all the area around the Riad is not the best but i didn't find any problem or trouble to walk during the late evening for its narrow streets. So at the end the location is really good.
In conclusion this Riad is a lovely place where spend a trip in Marrakech and a very useful solution for those who want to be near Djemma El Fna and the places near it. It is perfect to stay there with a group of friends, but i guess it must be lovely even for couples.
We didin't have the chance to have the hammam, but we enjoy staying in the terrace, even if it was winter.
The food was very good and we all loved to drink tea relaxing in the amazing quiet of this riad.
Last but not least we have to mentioned the kindness of Mohammed (riad's ownner), who was very kind during the days spent in the city.

Marrakech is a stunning, loud and vibrant city and the Dar Al Kounouz is an oasis of calm and comfort in the Medina, just a few minutes walk from the bustling heart of Djemma El Fna.
We were made very welcome by the owner and really enjoyed our stay, the en suite rooms are comfortable and with freshly prepared breakfasts to start each day. The rooms are clean, comfortable and warm ( we stayed in January 2012) and sat on the roof terrace of an evening watching the sun go down before wandering back to the main square for our evening meal.
I would recommend this Riad and Marrakech without reservation for an excellent break

My wife and I returned to this Riad for a 4 night stay with another couple of friends last week. It can sometimes be quite daunting and disappointing to return to a favourite place. we certainly need not have worried - the Riad has lost none of it's charm, style or welcome. I cannot praise highly enough the peace, calm and service you receive here from the moment you step through the door - Mohamed, the Manager, now includes a taxi from the Airport and a guide to the Riad in the overnight rate, so no concerns about finding the Riad in the alleyways and twists and turns of the Medina. The breakfasts served in the downstairs 'salle a manger', to the accompanying sound of the central fountain is excellent and the whole experience is of personal and calming service. The Riad can provide dinner at 17 Euros per person and there is also a Hammam on the first floor. The roof terrace, complete with tables and chairs and sunbeds provides an excellent view across the roofs of the houses in the Medina and the Koutoubia mosque and Atlas mountains provide a beautiful and exciting backdrop. I really cannot praise this place highly enough.

This is my first review that isn't entirely positive. Anyway, as the others say, the staff are great, very helpful etc. But for 65 Euros per night I expected a better room - I had dirty bed sheets, freezing room temperature (despite the heater being turned to 30 degrees), and no TV. Yes the architecture is beautiful but I was more worried about having to wear several layers just to be able to sleep.

The worst bit for me was the long winding dark alleyway leading to and from the Riad, with groups of young guys gathered at almost every corner... I was just too scared to go out and about. I went out during the day, still scared, but wouldn't dare go out at night. Not worth it, really. I certainly would not go back to this Riad or even Marrakech. Thanks very much! Casablanca is a much better holiday destination!

The staff and the Dar are so nice. It is a wonderfull sensation to walk through the house and see all the beauty in fine craftmanship. We really enjoyed our stay and the staff is wonderful and helpful.
We had about 8 different places where we stayed that holiday in Marocco, b ut this was absolutely the best!

Please do visit this Hotel if you want to enjoy your stay in the medina!

Mt wife and I stayed here in February 2009 and were staggered not only by the beauty of the interior of this small hotel but also by the welcome, courtesy and assistance by the hotel staff. From the moment we arrived and were entertained by the owner to mint tea and small cakes, through to the wonderful freshly cooked breakfast each morning and to the peace and tranquility of the interior, we were really blown away. I cannot emphasise too strongly how much we were captivated by this city and this hotel. well worth a visit. You will certainly not be disappointed.
