It's not flashy, modern or slick; Riad Kniza is an 18th-century mansion in the medina that the owners have restored to its former glory with traditional Moroccan tiles, woodwork and antiques. From the time we entered through the heavy wooden door into a fountain courtyard, we were transported into another world. We were upgraded to a suite consisting of a splendid sitting area with a fireplace, a connecting area with cabinets, closets, and media equipment, and a bedroom with a domed ceiling. The bathroom was spacious, with a huge tub, separate toilet and double sinks. Although the suite had AC, the windows overlooking the courtyard pool let in lovely breezes. Even more special: the delicious breakfasts delivered every day, the downstairs spa with a hamman, and the couscous dinner served to us one night in a private portico area. Plus, the staff was as courteous and helpful as one could wish. Marrakech has some fabulous hotels, but this place is ideal for those who want something really memorable.
