“Perfect Oasis”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 14, 2013

Visited October 2012 and wrote this upon our return but forgot to post it!
I spent a lot of time researching which Riad to choose and am so very pleased we chose this one. We opted for their 4-night package which was great value (look for 'Our offers' on the website) and then stayed an extra night!
When we arrived they had arranged for a guide (Shafik) to take us on a tour of the Medina. This was the best thing that could have happened as it gave us the confidence to go out and about on our own (with our 11 year old daughter). We actually booked him for another day to visit some monuments as his knowledge was superb and we got so much more out of it than had we been on our own.
There are alleys everywhere in the Medina and it would be very easy to get lost. From Riad Kniza it was incredibly easy to get to places as there is one street which forks off left to the Souks and straight on to the Djemaa el Fna. You are also on the edge of the city walls so very easy to get taxis etc.
The staff are simply wonderful. I read the reviews saying that 'nothing is too much trouble' and it isn't. I have never experienced service quite like it. Samira and Amina on Reception are superb. They will happily arrange/suggest anything you may want to do. They booked a horse and caleche to pick us up, rather than walk to the square to get one, as we were visiting the Majorelle Gardens (and it was the most ornate of all the carriages we saw whilst there!), booked all our restaurants and arranged transport if we needed it - they even sent one of the 'boys' to walk us to the restaurant on our first night as we were slightly apprehensive! On day two I needed to change some money and Samira sent someone to change it for us. On our final evening we were moving to another Suite and they transferred everything for us without having to pack, and it goes on .......
The Riad itself is just beautiful and the furnishings were stunning. We loved having breakfast on the roof top terrace and could have happily stayed up there all day! There are various seating areas (both covered and uncovered) with sunbeds too.
We ate in the Riad for 2 nights and I have to say it was, without doubt, the best food we had in the whole of our trip to Morocco (we had also spent 4 nights in the Atlas Mountains first).
The Riad has been in the same family for centuries which is very unusual in Marrakech and you sense the feeling of pride. Kamal, the director/owner's son, was there a lot of the time and was always happy to talk about his family home and I saw his father, Mohamed, there a couple of times. I thanked him for welcoming us into his beautiful home and he replied by saying "It is your home now" and that is exactly how it feels!

Room Tip: Junior Suite Johara was just stunning and on the first floor with no street noise. We moved to Seni...

We had an absolutely fabulous experience in every way at Riad Kniza, from the airport pick up to the exotic welcome with fresh juices in a magical room that instantly transported us to another world. Our suite was gorgeous (#1), and the traditional dinner in the dining room was so incredibly good we dined there every night. The staff arranged tours for us that were perfect additions to our trip, including riding camels and exploring the souks. We are already planning our return trip - it was the best stop on a 7 country tour!

Room Tip: We highly recommend suite #1, if your budget allow! Magnificent!

Some suspicious travelers have a growing theory that ratings can be engineered to make some properties look way better than they are by playing the ratings game. I occasionally count myself in that camp. Hotel Kniza dispels that notion as it is the real deal deserving of their lofty ratings ie a very nice property with world class service. It should be the choice when in Marrakech medina. First off, they include driver pick up on your arrival and an orientation walking tour with an English speaking guide. For the uninitiated into crazy (and crazy fun) Marrakech, this is great as it immediately makes your trip more settling. Secondly, the property is really nice with well appointed suites, a roof top terrace and a courtyard pool. But it is the service that sets it apart. Ex: show up at 7:30am where not only were our rooms ready but they serve an excellent breakfast on the spot Ex: my daughter misplaces purse somewhere in property…no problem as an all hands on deck entourage turns it up in our kids rooms hiding under an overturned blanket. Ex: wife breaks sandal walking on the cobble streets…no problem as a bell hop takes it to a local cobbler where it is fixed within 30 minutes (and refused to take payment, much less a tip). Go here as they don’t make them like this anymore.

Located at the end of a turn that looks like a door in an alley you enter a palace. Beautiful morroccan lush air conditioned rooms. Terrace breakfasts. Perfect service. English speaking. Brad pitt has been here and ronald reagan stayed here so its an icon. Food is sumptious.

I spent a long time choosing a Riad to stay in for a big birthday celebration. The thing that stood out for me and pursuaded me to book was the traditional style of the Riad and the comments on customer service. Firstly the good things:

The Riad is beautiful and the rooms are stunning. Yes they are a little dark but this is the nature of a riad and helps keep them lovely and cool. The room we were in was up a separate staircase with just one other room up there so very private and quiet. The Riad is a really calm, quiet and relaxing.

The food was excellent. We had a dinner on the first night as part of our package booked and it was fabulous. More food than you can possibly eat and excellent quality.

All soft drinks were included in our package which was excellent. Lots of mint tea, fresh orange and water with lovely pastries in the afternoon were most welcome.

The half day tour arranged for us with Omar was fantastic. An excellent guide, really interesting and would definitely highly recommend.

The not so good:

The main courtyard, plunge pool and rooms are all lovely but there the room terrace is very tired and quite dirty. The sunbeds and cushions/curtains in the seating areas were very worn and grubby and definitely need changing.

The location of the Riad was on the edge of the Northern Medina in an area that was mainly a locals market. This was actually quite interesting but not for the squeamish! however it is a good 15 to 20 minute brisk walk to the main square which in the heat at this time of year is quite a trek. During the day you can meander along and go through the Souks but in the evenings it seemed a long way. The other problem is that apart from Maison Arabe (which is lovely but very expensive) there is not much in the way of restaurants near Riad Kniza.

Service - after all the great reviews i was most sad about this. There were a number of issues, drinks ordered and not delivered, chasing up bookings for restaurants which they had done but just not bothered to let us know and the same with a trip that we booked quite last minute and again not confirmed so had to chase again. I contacted the Riad on a number of occasions before arrival with queries that were efficiently answered and I asked to arrange a few things but on arrival none of this was organised and I had to go through it all again. We asked for restaurant recommendations and apart from a couple of the most expensive in Marrakesh they were unable to assist. We had mixed receptions ranging from super friendly to complete indifference.

Breakfast was very repetitive with no choice as to what you would prefer. You are served lots of food but most goes to waste if it isn't things you like. I am not fussy but I really don't like huge pieces of chocolate cake for breakfast! I understand that for some this would be heaven but I would prefer to be offered a choice so as not to waste food unnecessarily.

As part of our package we were also given a free half hour massage. I asked about the use of the Hamman and what was available and the costs. They came back to me saying I was booked in the Hamman before our massages and no mention of cost. I thought it was included as we were told we could use it at any time just to give them plenty of notice to heat it up. We were a bit late back from a trip and so were running short on time so they first suggested we forget the massage and just have the Hamman but when we said we would prefer to just have the massage if we were short on time they managed to find time for both but when we got the bill on departure we had been charged 60 Euros for the Hamman - no wonder they suggested we have that and drop the free massage!

The Riad has no menu. They say order what you like but it is difficult when you have no idea what they can possibly do and more importantly what they are charging for anything! This put us off ordering food but we did have a few drinks and wine and it was reasonably priced but it would be good to see a menu of sorts or at least be offered some options.

As mentioned it was a big birthday celebration and I had mentioned this in my emails but this was not even acknowledged with a Happy Birthday from any of the staff which again doesn't point to excellent customer service.

I know that these are all quite picky and I assure you I am not a diva but I was overall disappointed.

We did have a lovely trip and think Marrakesh is fascinating and definitely worth a visit. This was our second visit and on the first we also stayed in a Riad which was much cheaper and although not as pretty the service we received there was far superior. Were we to return again it would sadly not be to Riad Kniza.

Room Tip: The rooms are beautiful but i wouldn't choose one on the ground floor as you are likely to be di...

I stayed at Riad Kniza a while back, and the experience was totally faultless! We were on a package through the Riad, and the food on offer was great, including the in room breakfast. Everything else the Riad organised (Airport pick-up, Walking Tour, Hammam, Massage and Atlas mountain visit) were superb. They even arranged a Shisha pipe on the roof terrace for us with no extra cost!

The raid is gorgeous and a true haven from the bustle of Marrakech, as beautiful as it is. Our suite seas beautiful, and we were made to feel so welcome by the fantastic staff. It was like a home from home, and the whole atmosphere was calm and relaxing and so interesting at the same time. The restaurant is superb, and the food and wine were really quite amazing. We used the hammam, and it was fantastic. We felt so sad to go and definitely will back. Thanks to Kemal and the team for a wonderful introduction to their wonderful country and city!
