“riad farnatchi heaven”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 13, 2008

i went to morocco by myself,a lifelong dream finally coming true.I am a 40 ish single woman from Montreal.Needless to say, I was advised against it by a few, considering al the "usual" reservations some of us might have or experienced. As soon as I put my feet on the ground,I fell in love with the colors, smells, noises and craziness of Marrakesh.Incredibly exhilarating and fascinating,it is a jump in another time, another way of life.I used the services of "trufflepig" travel agency from Toronto and gave them carte blanche for the whole 2 weeks stay. From hotels to activities, I was completely in their incredibly organised and professional hands. They booked my first 5 days at Riad Farnatchi. As all other riads, it is hidden in a narrow alley behind a nondescript door. But as soon as it opens, you arrive in a beautiful haven of peace and quiet .Elegant and refined down to the tiniest details. But although the Riad's service, rooms ,cuisine , staff and general quietness that you revel in , once inside in the walls the heart and soul of the place is Mme Lynn...A fixture in Marrakesh, she is the one that made the trip. Extremely knowledgeable of all the right people and places , she has completely taken care of me and i felt i was in the best hands possible .Manager of the riad, she is far more and will make your stay an experience that woud not be possible without her knowledge and expertise. The whole week would have been incredible because of Marrakesh but her attention to the guests and her suggestions of all things in the city brought this trip to another level completely.....Feeling like you "belong" in the city, even if for 5 days....I called her, "madame lynn concierge extraordinaire" :)

While Riad Farnatchi is one of the most expensive riads in Marrakech it is head and shoulders above the rest.
The rooms are beautiful and our bathroom worthy of a review devoted to itself - huge bath, great shower (from which one could gaze at the sky/stars) separate room for double basins, lovely lighting and huge choice of Molton Brown products.
It seemed that every room has a beautiful balcony and the view of the High Atlas at breakfast is maginficent.
Public rooms continue the theme, and while pool is small it is big by Riad standards.
Service is exemplary overseen by Lynn Perez who is best desrbied in one of the guide books as a "can do" person.
The owner's 5 page guide to Marrakech restaurants and hotels outside the Medina is an informative and entertaining read.
This establishment really is a haven from the bustle of the Medina - calm, beautiful and quiet. We did not need the offered earplugs to counter the 5 a.m. call to prayer.
Perhaps the only downside was rather a solemn setting for dinner (good advice on the competitively-priced local wines) with food that was sound rather than what the rest of the place would lead one to expect.
Apart from this one caveat we found Farnatchi to be flawless.

Riad Farnatchi is the best place to stay in Marrakech old town. It's nestled amongst the winding back streets and is fantastically situated close to everything but at the same time provides a welcome sanctuary from the chaos.

The service was the best I've come across in Marrakech. Nothing was too much problem even though most things had been thought of in advance, even down to the Moroccan slippers by the side of the bed and hot honey and lemon when I came down with a sniffle. My room could have fit my whole flat inside. Beautifully decorated in tasteful Moroccan style. The highlight was having a bath full of bubbles in the enormous marble bath in the middle of our private courtyard.

The hotel is a traditional old Moroccan house based around a series of interior open courtyards. The main one is where you find the spotless, sparkling swimming pool. Unfortunately the weather was a bit too cold to go swimming but it was a lovely place to chill out in one of the beautifully decorated rooms around the side.

As a treat we booked a traditional Moroccan steam bath (hammam) at the hotel, followed by a massage. It was an amazing experience to be rubbed down with black soap, scrubbed and then douched with buckets of warm water. My skin felt fantastic afterwards and the massage, including hot rocks placed on my spine was the best I've ever had...and I've had a few!

The perfect end to the evening was a bottle of rosé and some cute and tasty canapés on Farnatchi's roof at sunset. We sat and chatted whilst watching the sun go down over the Koutoubia mosque and Marrakech's day drawing to a close. It was then a short walk to dinner at the exquisite Restaurant Fondouk just up the road, that the amazing, 'nothing is too much for you' manager had booked for us when we said we wanted to eat out.

In conclusion, Riad Farnatchi is the perfect spot for a relaxing break yet brilliantly situated in the heart of the medina with easy access to all the sites and sounds of Marrakech. I cannot recommend it enough.

A short but sweet review - Riad Farnatchi is simply the best place we have ever stayed and I like to think of myself as a purveyor of fine accommodation! My advice - if you don't stay here once in your life you have missed something wonderful. The riad is a stunning and breathtaking space - beautiful and varied common spaces, wonderfully appointed rooms with luxurious furnishings and great detail throughout. What makes this place a special experience though is the staff and Lynn - they looked after us like we have never been looked after before and I think that was because of the philosophy they have about how to look after your guests. You cannot be disappointed (or there is something seriously wrong with you...).

Sometimes it all comes together, and its perfect. This was one of those moments. As a hotel owner, I have a very critical eye, and I know how hard it is to reach this level of excellence. Well, here it is. Perfect: staff, design, housekeeping, space, amenities, food, location, concept, attention to detail. Especially the staff - the owner must know how lucky he is to be surrounded by such kind, good people. I travel often, and this was THE best vacation, ever. Bravo.

A short review for this special place. Forget about the word 'hotel' and think more along the lines of arriving at the home of an old friend in a far away city. It was no surprise to learn that Riad Farnatchi was in fact setup by a semi-retired British hotelier who wanted an intimate place for family and friends, thank god he was selfless and opened it up to guests as that same sentiment is felt by all who visit.

Riad Farnatchi is so highly customized to the individual that even after years of travelling, we find ourselves still talking about it nearly two years after our visit (and coincidentally writing a review on this site two years later). That should say enough about the place, but for those who are curious, all I can recommend is to first ask for "Lynne". An American living deep in the medinas of Marrakech, she adores and is adored by the local population and has an intrinsic knowledge of how the small, ancient city works. She will bend over backwards to make sure that absolutely any desire you have is fulfilled ahead of you arriving - from finding you the exact thread count of sheets you would like, to arranging thai massages, cooking lessons, a special champagne by sunset mezze dinner in the desert - absolutely anything you want is arranged to an impeccable standard.

Don't expect wifi internet don't expect alot of fuss and best of all, don't expect to feel anything but pampered in this small, beautifully crafted, exclusive boutique hotel. The location by the way is unique. You will be picked up by the hotel's black SUV by a chic ex-military 'minder' who will guide you through the medina and back alleys to arrive at the riadh which is nestled behind two large ancient doors, we have never experienced the sense of timelessness before, almost as if the last one thousand years had brushed over this city and the Farnatchi just slipped in somehow, offering a glimpse of the past to its guests.

Rooms were large, cool and beautifully appointed. The rooftop deck overlooking the city with its towering mosques and burnished orange and beige buildings is an incredible area to have breakfast and relax during the day. The courtyard provides tranquility and relaxation and the traditional hamam is a must try. The city of exotic colors, mysterious characters, wonderful food and ancient tradition is a must see/experience for all ages. The ideal setting for this without any question is Riad Farnatchi. Sure, you could stay at one of the large hotels or a 'big' classic like Le Mamunya, but you will live to regret it as you will never get the intimate 'feel' for beautiful Marrakech as you would at this hotel. 100/100 and a very special thank you to Lynne.

  • Liked — The service and intimate connection with city you get by staying here.
  • Disliked — Sounds basic, but complimentary water would be a good suggestion (especially in Marrakech)

We have stayed at the Farnatchi on two different occasions and have had a wonderful experience both times. The first time we went, the manager spent a looong time on the phone for us, helping to straighten out complicated airline reservations. The second time, we availed ourselves of the pick-up at the airport service and also of the laundry service, both of which were excellent. The breakfasts are delicious, and we've also had dinner there twice--once in the dining room and once in our room, which was so pretty we didn't want to go out! The staff were friendly and warm. We highly recommend the Riad Farnatchi!
