“Great style, friendly attentive staff"”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 17, 2012

I should have written earlier regarding my stay at Riad Farnatchi. I have not reviewed an hotel before - probably through simple inertia - but having recommended (actually insisted) that any friend who would listen should stay at Riad Farnatchi, I was astonished to hear from one of them, who had just looked it up on Trip Advisor, that someone had trashed it`s otherwise impeccable record. I suppose that it is impossible to be all things to all men, but it is truly impossible to understand how anyone could have actually visited Riad Farnatchi and found the staff and management anything other than totally and happily solicitous.
I have visited Marrakech at least a dozen times over the past 20 years. Without naming names, I have been lucky enough to stay in many of the city`s best addresses, but none have combined the charm and genuine happiness that personified all at Riad Farnatchi.
Riad Farnatchi is such a special place from the architecture to the staff, but I can see little point in re-iterating all the plaudits that it has received from your other recent reviewers. In fact, I would leave it at that if it wasn^t for the fact that James (Wix), the owner, had looked after us with such obvious joy. His natural efforts go way beyond the call of duty and the description as "impersonal" is simply absurd.
We are often told that "it takes all types" but it is utterly wrong that one strange individual should be allowed to mislead your readers so comprehensively without comment from a rather more objective (and regular) guest.

After staying at 3 different riads during our Morocco trip, I will say that Farnatchi was by far the most glam and luxurious. That being said, it was also the most expensive, so it came at a price!

The location is perfect, very close to Ben Yousef, a short walk to chill and nice shopping, and lots of other nice riads (trust me, you want to be in a place with some other tourists around). Overall it was beautiful - the blue patios, the carpets throughout, the very nice living spaces and movie room. They unfortunately don't let you select which room to stay in, unless you want to book room number 9. However, they are all special and different, we stayed in room 4 which had a small private patio upstairs (through crowded with lounge chairs) and a very cute marble bathroom. They use Molton Brown products, a very British pick by their British owner.

The dinner was lovely, we had ours by the pool and they were happy to accommodate whatever we wanted to eat (which was a very tasty fish tagine and a harira). The service was very polite. Just in comparison to the others we stayed at, it felt very much like a hotel, not a riad. There was no personal attention and not a lot of personality or warmth -- once we got a little lost trying to find our room and there was no one on hand to help us out.

One small nit is that we had 3 people staying in our room so they went out of their way to charge us an extra 17 euro for breakfast, which we were having at 630am to catch our flight so we had like one piece of bread each. And no, this was no champagne breakfast. If you're going to charge me upwards 300 euro a night, the least you can do is throw in a breakfast.

Overall, this is very much a couple getaway, but a nice treat for both exploring the medina or just hiding away in Marrakech.

I was delighted to read your comments regarding the quality of our rooms, our dinners and our very special location. I was, however, mortified to read your thoughts about the service you received and the breakfast that you were served.

As you will recall, I greeted you myself and, as is our custom, spent some time discussing your plans for your all-too-short visit. Our staff genuinely enjoy the opportunity to chat to guests and so your comments about the impersonality of our service are almost as much of a mystery as those regarding breakfast, which was served as requested at 06.00.

I would like to start by addressing your complaint of not necessarily being able to get the room you wanted. Obviously, in the case of suites 2 and 9, they are the only ones in their respective price band and so you are bound to be guaranteed them if they are available. Guests interested in booking one of our other suites are always asked to give us their first three choices, so that we can plan our occupancy in order to avoid numerous empty rooms. On average, in excess of 70% of guests booking more than three weeks in advance get their first choice and 95% get either their first or second choice. Although very few hotels have such individual rooms as ours and even fewer offer a guaranteed choice, I do accept that the 5% that fail to get their first or second choice might be disappointed, although they rarely are. Happily, that was not the case with your booking.

You kindly noted that we didn't charge for the extra person in your room, which we would normally apply for three adults sharing a room. Our room charges include breakfast for two, as well as a plethora of other goodies and so it doesn't seem unreasonable for us to have charged for the extra breakfast that was requested. Our cooks arrive at 07.00 and so, regrettably, we were unable to provide freshly prepared Moroccan pancakes at 06.00. They are delicious when prepared to order by our Berber cooks but quite revolting when reheated the next day, You were, however, offered freshly squeezed orange juice, home made yoghurt, fresh fruit salad, home baked bread, a selection of home made jams, freshly ground coffee and tea. In spite of the early hour, freshly cooked eggs would have been provided with pleasure, had they been requested. On reflection, I hope that you will agree that if you were too rushed to eat more than a piece of bread, it is less than reasonable that we should be downgraded as a consequence.

I took over at Riad Farnatchi 16 months ago. During that time, yours has been the only review to consider the service that we offer to be anything other than exceptional. It is a matter of immense disappointment to all of us at Farnatchi that you felt your stay to have been anything less than the perfection that you had every right to expect. The Farnatchi team and I love looking after our guests and pride ourselves in our determination to go that "extra mile". Indeed another recent guest wrote to TripAdvisor to say how wonderful it was that we seemed to know what they wanted before they did!

We don't try to be all things to all men - we leave that style of hotelkeeping to the multiple chains - but we do feel that our exceptional attention to our guests' wishes is nearly as good as all our other reviewers have commented. Come and stay with us again soon and let us show you again how much we really do care!

Riad Farnatchi is by far one of the best places I have ever stayed. As soon as we stepped through the door, owner James Wix and all the charming staff made us feel right at home. The service was attentive but not overwhelming, our bedroom was spacious (well palatial) and sympathetically decorated with beautiful Moroccan accents and the bathroom was incredible – rainforest shower, enormous bath and double sinks. The food was absolutely delicious to say the least - we loved the homemade chapatti like breads and homemade yoghurt for breakfast – amazing! The Riad really does feel like an oasis in the middle of the buzzing, crazy atmosphere of the souks – we could not have asked for a better location. My only regret of the trip was that we had to leave! I could not recommend this hotel more - a definite, definite, must for Marrakech.

An absolutely wonderful experience from beginning to end of our five day trip. Greeted by the delightful owner, James, and his cheerful and attentive staff, for whom no request is too much trouble, our jaws dropped to find this beautiful oasis of calm in the ultimate central Medina location.

As mentioned by other reviewers, our room was beyond any expectation in terms of size and attention to detail in both decor and comfort. Given total flexibility on where we had dinner on night one, and having arrived late, we opted for it to be served on our expansive balcony. The setting was gorgeous and the meal itself surpassed in quality any of the other restaurants we tried while in Marrakech- making it very tempting to spend every meal at the riad!

Despite temptation we did explore beyond Riad Farnatchi, amongst other things taking a day trip into the Atlas Mountains. The trip was organised seamlessly by the Riad staff and we enjoyed a magical day in the mountains admiring breathtaking scenery, experiencing rural Moroccan life and enjoying an excellent traditional lunch. Exhausted after a long day we gave the hammam a go and enjoyed a soothing massage (these you have to try- so relaxing!).

All in all Riad Farnatchi offered the perfect break, be it for the opportunities to explore the Medina and beyond, relax in the hammam, or just chill out on the roof terrace and cool off in the pool. As many have said, this is the real Marrakech experience to be had, with 5+ star comforts and the character to go with it. I, like others, cannot see how Riad Farnatchi isn't at #1 on tripadvisor. I have stayed elsewhere in Marrakech in the past but now would never look further than Riad Farnatchi!

Room Tip: All the rooms are large and beautifully finished but also unique. As mentioned, Riad Farnatchi staf...

We’ve just returned from a fabulous 5 days holiday at Riad Farnatchi in Marrakech. The accommodation, food and service were so outstanding that we feel compelled to write.
Our suite exceeded all our expectations (and we are a well-travelled couple). Tastefully and exquisitely furnished in typical Moroccan style, it provided an enriching and peaceful haven after an action-packed day in the bustling souk or a trip to the Atlas mountains. My husband and I had planned on a great many excursions in keeping with our hectic life in London. However, with 28 degrees and beautiful sunshine, we spent more time relaxing in the Riad than we had expected from a city break.
Our days were spent enjoying a superb breakfast consisting of delicious local fare, fresh orange juice and wonderful coffee. One look at the freshly baked stuffed pancakes put paid to any ambitions we may have had to lose weight. They were irresistible!
Although in the middle of the medina, the Riad is a haven of peace and quiet. A walk through the souk at our doorstep was a frequent pastime. We had no intention of purchasing more than a few souvenirs for the family. Needless to say, temptation proved too great! Bargaining with the friendly sellers in a good-tempered manner was great fun, and we are delighted with the bedspread and other choice pieces that now adorn our Richmond house.
No better antidote to the hustle and bustle of the souk or a guided trip to one of the many attractions than whiling away a few hours in the heat of the day up on the roof terrace. A dip in the pool is a further option. The attentive and highly accomplished staff spoiled us with refreshing drinks and sorbets as well as the traditional sweet mint tea.
A relaxing session in the hammam or a massage might be squeezed in before a sumptuous dinner in the elegant restaurant or a bbq on the roof terrace. The traditional local dishes are expertly prepared by the Berber chef and were served by kind and thoughtful staff. No request was too much for them, the answer was always ‘yes’ and delivered with a lovely smile.
We must pay tribute to James Wix, the owner and director of Riad Farnatchi. A highly accomplished hotelier and host, he is at the helm of this wonderful, exciting and innovative venue where no effort is spared to make you feel welcome and spoilt.
Furnished with a delicious packed lunch, we very reluctantly left this oasis of peace and relaxation fully intending to return next year.

Room Tip: The 'fitness centre' is a massage treatment room; they also have their own hammam.

Riad Farnatchi was recommended to us by friends who had visited 5 years ago 'You just have to go there' to quote. So expectations were high but this was also the first trip my husband I had made together without our 3 very young children. So we wanted something special...
From the moment we were let through the huge door late a night it did not disappoint.
The very friendly staff, delicious food, amazing views from the terrace our stay was truly perfect in every way.
Escaping back from the souks to the tranqulity of our room (all so nice it was hard to choose which one to go for!) or the pool to cool down.
We could not recommend it enough and hope to return very soon!

Room Tip: All of them are special in their own way!

There are few things I could say that have not been said before. This is THE Riad from which to explore Marrakech. The staff are fantastic, the service impeccable and the rooms embody everything that is wonderful about the city. The impeccable taste is palpable throughout the property, from the exquisite furnishings to the fantastic food prepared by a real Berber Chef. The owner is attentive and engaging and will do everything in his powers to ensure your stay is perfect. Don't hesitate - book now!
