“Go and explore”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 1, 2014

Do not rely on your GPS in Mellah - it does not work there. ¨
In the city center you find very worn out district with narrow lanes - total labyrinth, but it is worth to explore. Some houses are torn down with no signs of further development.
It is worth to explore the genius loci is interesting.
Do not go there in the night.
You definitely happen to meet someone (kids, youth, old men...) who offers you help to explore Mellah - expect you pay even at the beginning he says he is not a guide. Or refuse his help at the very beginning.
There is a Sinagogue - you get interesting information for free, some shade. From outside looks like normal house and we had a bit difficulties to recognize the building from outside. Usually someone sits on chair in the narrow lane in front of the door.

“Not my thing”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 16, 2014

I heard many people speaking about this place. As far as I am concerned, it is not a big deal as you can easily get lost. In the middle of the Mellah, I did not feel secure as many people were staring at me and some girls tried to apprach me for cheap sex. Becareful not to eengage in any cheap sexual relationship because it is not safe and one miay get in trouble with the neighbourhood guys who will be waiting for some tips from you!!

“A very nice neighbourhood; a must”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 17, 2014

You will find: Great markets. The 2 palaces; 'Bahia' and 'El Badi' and one of the best patisserie shops 'Anjar'. The Jewish market; clothes, spices, fabrics, beads, necklaces and pottery. The same products as in the Soukh but cheaper and a much friendlier atmosphere. Because there live many very poor people, you might be approached by pushy 'fake guides' to accompany you to the Jewish cemetary or the synagoge. (better not) You will also find The small indoor Jewelry market; gold and silver. The Indoor market; THE place to see the ART of making OURKA (or warka) dough for the famous 'Pastilla'! But also fruits, veggies and fish, chicken etc. It can be smelly though... The small beautiful square with the storks; for lamps and small restaurants with local food, No wine... For more sophisticated food (even SUSHI !!!) GO TO the roof terrace at The KOSYBAR.Yess wine....right next to the one and only huge tree next to the old city wall. Lunch during the day and when being exhausted at the end of the day: THE best place for a SuperChill. Wine and Dine.... A stunning vieuw on the storks and the most beautiful sunset behind the tower of the Koutoubia in the distance.....

“Overrated”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 23, 2014

We had booked the guide to take us through few attractions and this was first one he suggested. There is quite a bit of walking to see the remnants of some historic constructions. The highlight was the nests of storks utilising the high walls. There is not a lot to see here and I did feel that it was really overrated. Skip this if you are in Marrakech for a day. Visit if you have some spare time late afternoon for a relaxed stroll.

Is the old jewish quarter and market just a couple of minutes walk from Riad Hayati.
It is famed for its silver jewellery and spice markets.
