Our guide recommended we visit #14 restaurant among all the open-air food booths in Djemaa el-Fna Square. The whole square is a study in chaos, with everyone vying for your attention and your dirhams. After much searching random numbered restaurants we came upon #14. We could tell right away that it was the most popular and delicious by all the barkers from other restaurants trying to lure you away from there to their own empty places.
We squeezed into the picnic table with many other diners. The tiny restaurant was full of people, maybe 50 people, of which 40 or so were locals. Lively waiters and cooks were cooking and serving like mad. The menu was quite varied. We had the fish, calamari, eggplant dip, fried eggplant, and of course bread and mint tea. It was served on a piece of paper, no utensils were anywhere. You eat with your hands, sort of picnic style. The food was plentiful, hot and so delicious.
Then when we went to pay we were shocked to learn that the whole meal for 2 people came to around 6 Euros (60 dirham). We thought there was some mistake but no indeed that was the right price. Wow what a great deal. A delightful experience.
