Al-Bushra was the perfect base for our first 4 days visit to Marrakech. Tucked away in a quiet side street only 5 minutes from the medina, it puts all the main sights within easy walking distance and makes a good lunchtime break when you just need to take five minutes out from the bustle!
The riad is beautifully appointed – Gary and Steve have taken real care designing a first class ‘home from home’ where they’ve paid real attention to the décor and details in every room and living space. But Al-Bushra is much more than that – it’s about unobtrusive service of the highest standard. It all just works so well!
Gary is an impeccable host, who from the moment we arrived, could not have done more to ensure everything was exactly as we would want it. And his culinary skills are superb! Each day starts with a breakfast of fresh juice, coffee, fruit, and delicious pastries which really sets you up for the day. (For something a little different, make sure you try the egg tagine brunch). In the evenings, we often ate in the main city square but would relax beforehand with a drink in-hand on the riad roof terrace watching the sun set listening to the evening pray calls.
Marrakech can be cheeky and catch you off-guard, so a little friendly help goes a long way. Gary’s local knowledge is invaluable when planning your trip. We would recommend pre-paying for your airport transfer through the riad – taxis are not allowed into the old city but handcarts and porters are! Morocco also has a closed currency so it’s useful to know that Sterling can be exchanged around the corner from Al-Bushra if you don’t want to queue at the airport. All airport purchases have to be paid for in Euros, including duty free. Sterling and dirham are not accepted, making it a tad tricky if you fancy a drink while waiting for your plane.
We ventured out of the city on day 3, up to the mountainous Ourika Valley and falls – well-worth the trip and easy to do by Grand Taxi from near the Koutoubia. We paid 500 dirham for the day plus extra for an English-speaking guide at the falls - and the views on the way are stunning.
Al-Bushra made our holiday in Marrakech – with so much still to see in the world we don’t often repeat visits but this time we have made an exception and we’re already booked to go back next year. Roll on Feb 2014!!
