“We love Marrakech and Riad Al-Bushra is a complete gem!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 22, 2013

Al-Bushra was the perfect base for our first 4 days visit to Marrakech. Tucked away in a quiet side street only 5 minutes from the medina, it puts all the main sights within easy walking distance and makes a good lunchtime break when you just need to take five minutes out from the bustle!

The riad is beautifully appointed – Gary and Steve have taken real care designing a first class ‘home from home’ where they’ve paid real attention to the décor and details in every room and living space. But Al-Bushra is much more than that – it’s about unobtrusive service of the highest standard. It all just works so well!

Gary is an impeccable host, who from the moment we arrived, could not have done more to ensure everything was exactly as we would want it. And his culinary skills are superb! Each day starts with a breakfast of fresh juice, coffee, fruit, and delicious pastries which really sets you up for the day. (For something a little different, make sure you try the egg tagine brunch). In the evenings, we often ate in the main city square but would relax beforehand with a drink in-hand on the riad roof terrace watching the sun set listening to the evening pray calls.

Marrakech can be cheeky and catch you off-guard, so a little friendly help goes a long way. Gary’s local knowledge is invaluable when planning your trip. We would recommend pre-paying for your airport transfer through the riad – taxis are not allowed into the old city but handcarts and porters are! Morocco also has a closed currency so it’s useful to know that Sterling can be exchanged around the corner from Al-Bushra if you don’t want to queue at the airport. All airport purchases have to be paid for in Euros, including duty free. Sterling and dirham are not accepted, making it a tad tricky if you fancy a drink while waiting for your plane.

We ventured out of the city on day 3, up to the mountainous Ourika Valley and falls – well-worth the trip and easy to do by Grand Taxi from near the Koutoubia. We paid 500 dirham for the day plus extra for an English-speaking guide at the falls - and the views on the way are stunning.

Al-Bushra made our holiday in Marrakech – with so much still to see in the world we don’t often repeat visits but this time we have made an exception and we’re already booked to go back next year. Roll on Feb 2014!!

Thank you for taking the time to write such a constructive review. It is most appreciated. Delighted that you liked the egg tagine; Gary's crying eyes from peeling the onions seem to pay off! Thank you.

You clearly had a good time whilst in Marrakech and we are proud that the Riad and Gary played a small part in that enjoyment. We look forward to welcoming you back next year.

Thank you.

This place was highly recommended to us by friends and it definitely lived up to the rave reviews. The location was fantastic, right in the middle of the historic, central Medina part of Marrakech and handy for the key sights, yet also a peaceful oasis of tranquility. This Riad has just been beautifully restored. We experienced fantastic hospitality from Gary, the owner, who went out of his way to make our stay a delight. Gary served fantastic breakfasts on the roof terrace, with fresh fruits and pastries and gave us lots of advice and useful tips to get the most of our stay. Fantastic hospitality !

We've just returned from a short break in Marrekech in Riad Al-Bushra and can't thank the owners enough. Having arranged our transfers from the airport, we were transported to a beautifully restored riad - a real oasis of calm - and the grey English winter rapidly became but a distant memory. We were treated to lavish breakfasts, which we chose to have have on the roof terrace - an excellent place to recover from the joys of coffee, croissants and a fresh fruit salad to die for. The roof terrace also served as an excellent place to see the sunset, hear the muazzin and review the day - all over a glass of wine. Nothing was too much trouble for our host, whether it was providing directions, breakfast / lunch requests to arranging excursions; we thoroughly recommend the balloon trip which was well worth the early start.
In summary, we had a great time and are now looking at the diary for when we can go back to Riad Al-Bushra.

We have just returned from a wonderful stay at Riad Al-Bushra. The Riad is beautiful; tastefully decorated with thoughtful use of the space providing different areas within which to relax. We experienced fantastic hospitality from Gary and Steve, the owners, who were incredibly helpful in making our stay a very special one. The highlight of every day was the amazing breakfast feast that was served on the roof terrace; local fruit, pastries and Gary's wonderful cooking provided the perfect start to every day.

The Riad was perfectly located, just a short stroll from the main square and yet in a very quiet area of the medina. Once inside the Riad, the hustle and bustle of the city felt a million miles away and it was very easy to relax and enjoy the facilities along with the complimentary hot drinks.

During our stay we wanted to visit Essaouira and Gary very helpfully gave us the transport options with the various costs and comfort. With their local knowledge and experience, Gary and Steve were able to provide us with information so that we could get the most from our stay and we are already planning a return visit.

We stayed in Riad Al-Bushra during a romantic getaway to Marrakesh and Essaouira. We can absolutely recommend this gorgeous riad, run with passion and enthousiasm by the English owners. The riad is ideally located, in a nice part of the Medina, near Jemaa El Fna square, yet wonderfully quiet. The rooms are tastefully decorated, spacious, and very comfortable (quality mattresses, a real luxury!). Every morning a lovely fresh, abundant breakfast was served (on the roof terrace, in the middle of winter!). One evening we had dinner in the riad, which proved to be one of the best meals we had in Morocco: a lamb tajine with caramelised tomatoes that still makes our mouth water nostalgically...
For those who have a few days in Marrakesh, an excursion to Essaouira is well worthwile, the owners were very helpful and arranged transport for us.

Many thanks for taking the time to wrote a review. We are pleased you enjoyed your stay and thank you for noticing the mattresses. We bought the best mattresses available in Morocco. We are glad the investment paid off.

Everyone who goes to Essaouria seems to enjoy the experience. I recall you spent several days there before returning to us for your final night in Morocco. We also like Essaouria and are delighted you also enjoyed it.

We look forward to welcoming you back sometime soon. Thank you.

This Riad has been beautifully restored and offers a tranquil base from which to explore the amazing Unesco World Heritage Site of Marrakech old town, and a retreat to return to after a days exploration. When the senses need a rest, the roof terrace of Riad Al Bushra is the ideal location to watch the sun set. The Riad offers amazing cooked breakfasts and a traditional Morrocan Feast can be arranged by appointment, which I thoroughly recommend: the most amazing food. Our hosts were available to meet any need and to offer guidance and arranged a trip to the coastal town of Essouira for us, which offered further insight into Morrocan life.
Small private pockets are available throughout the Riad, where you can read, catch up with e-mails or just relax, without feeling you have to limit yourself to your room. However should you choose to relax in your room these are the height of comfort too. We will certainly return to Riad Al Bushra again and recommend anyone heading to Marrakech check it out too.

We were wowed by the sumptuous surroundings and attention to detail of the recent restoration of Riad al Bushra by its English owners. Daily cooked breakfast was a real treat along with a varied selection of local breads and pastries and gallons of freshly brewed coffee.

Our hosts were on hand to provide local information and helped us book a trip to the seaside town of Essaouira which is well worth the day out of Marrakech. We also took advantage of the opportunity to have a home cooked Moroccan meal prepared for us by a member of the Riad staff which was a wonderful experience.

Our thanks to the Riad al Bushra team for making our first impression of Morocco such a favourable one.
