Maze of alleyways with traders trying to sell you anything they can. Bartering to get the best price, start as low as you can. Bargains to be had if you bargain tough. Careful you don't get lost..... Lol. Well worth a look.

“Assault on the senses”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 22, 2013

First thing we noticed was the noise, bells, drums, whistles and people all talking at once. then we were struck by the almost medieval impression it gave with the building style, myriad of tunnels and way of life and finally the smell....a combination of petrol from the dozens of scooters racing along and weaving in & out of the alleys through to cat mess in the smaller alleys. Whichever way you looked, there was something going on. Everything from snake charmers to bare knuckle fighters in the square through to an overwhelming array of goods for sale in the souk itself. You could easily get lost, it's so big, but it's divided into sections, carpets, metals, lanterns, spices and so on so that helped with getting your bearings. The stall holders were friendly but all mastered the knack of effectively 'trapping' you in a corner of their stall and doing their utmost to make you buy....even if you didn't want to. Our English culture is one of browsing, picking up and putting down, going from shop to shop until we find something we may want to buy,,,,but here in Marrakech it felt like running the gauntlet as we ended up not wanting to stop and look for fear of being hassled yet again. Of course, this is the way shopping is done here but it felt like a strain rather than a pleasure after a while. Definitely worth a visit but one of those 'once seen never forgotten' excursions that we personally wouldn't want to repeat. We did enjoy it but it was exhausting.

“interesting place to get lost in”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 22, 2013

A lot of colors and smells in the souks. You have to bargain a lot for the price because the prices for tourists are heavily inflated. So take your time to look around and make sure you get the best price. If unhappy just turn around and leave and they will most probably ask you to come back and sell you the staff for the price you want. A lot of fun to "play" with the local merchants. It is gret fun to get lost in the souk.

very colourfull and interesting but impossible to buy anything as they wont agree a price and keep bringing more items so u give up in the end, it is like stepping back in time and a guide arranged by the hotel is very usefull to learn the history of the place

Great fun. Recommend arriving early and getting lost/exploring. When haggling, offer 25% of their initial price. After some haggling, you'll almost inevitably end up paying about 30-35% of their original price!
