“be prepared”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 22, 2013

be prepared to be in awe and very hot! I recently went to Marrakech and visited the souk twice and enjoyed both times! the traders can be a little bit pushy but no more than you would expect! always ask how much they want for the item and start haggling from under half price! prices vary from stall to stall and often its exactly the same item so look around before making any purchase and do nit be afraid to walk away if you do not like the price! inside the souk there is a factory that makes and sells amazing argan oil and Moroccan oil with very good group discounts! also there is a section that is the leather factory where the actual slippers and sandals are made! ask a guide to take you there as there are some real bargains to be had! on our first visit we used an unofficial tour guide man called mohammed and we found him again the second time! we did tip him but this was purely our choice not a requirement!

“Seek and you will find....”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 22, 2013

The souk is a maze of alleys and vendors all selling the same thing - bags, pots, jewellry, scarfs, sandals, spices - but that is exactly what you would expect. Yes, it is very easy to get lost, but look up and you will see signs back to the main square so just follow them and eventually you will get back to civilisation. You must barter - whatever the price is they quote, go in with your initial bid at just under half. And be prepared to walk away, even if they get agressive, sad or make you feel guilty! We bought some small pots, the ones 'on show' were Safi branded which is supposed to be a good quality ceramic. We pointed out the colours we wanted, the vendor got the pots for us and wrapped them up - when we opened the package at home, the pots were not branded so much poorer quality - but hey, we paid £3 for each, so what do you expect. But maybe just watch what they actually put in the bag! I found some of the vendors a bit agressive in their way that they tried to stop you to come into their shop, and you do have to be prepared for every vendor to try to entice you in, so it does get a bit tiring after a while saying constantly no thank you, but that is all part of the fun! Seek out the bargains - leather bags are definately at the top of the list, as are the scarfs. If you do find yourself wandering out of the souk into unfamiliar streets, be prepared if you are truly lost and someone helps you find your way back to pay a tip. Go there and enjoy the experience! It has to be done.

“A Must Experience but perhaps alittle too much hassle!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 20, 2013

We had a lovely few hours in the Souks with our guide (and im really glad we paid afew pound to have him with us) A real eye opener to see so many hand made Moroccan goods and in set in so many streets and so interesting to watch them making these goods but for us it was alittle too much hassle even though we did have our guide with us it is a must to go see.

“Labyrinth”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 14, 2013

Loved shopping in the souks- would need two weeks just for shopping! Even if you're not a shopper its still definately a trip you have to make. Don't show that you're intersted in anything even if you are, keep it cool and casual and reserved that way you won't get harrased. If you like something, don't show it! Think of how much you want to pay before hand, then haggle away. Don't be afraid to walk away without buying even if you have spent a while haggling. Shop arround before hand to see what going rates are then go for it.
