“Great fun!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 15, 2012

The souks were by far the best part of Marrakech and you can have a great time as long as you understand the rules.
1. If you want something, you will need to pay. This includes taking photos or having someone guide you out of the maze, it won't be much and agree a price beforehand.
2. Haggle. Decide how much you want to pay, then offer half. If the shopkeeper refuses then say no and start to walk away. They will try and make you feel guilty, but this is part of the game. Remember - they wouldn't sell it to you if it was under cost so don't believe that line!
3. Don't stress out about getting 'ripped off'. Decide how much the item is worth to you. If you get it for that price or below, who cares what others pay?!
4. Say no. If you aren't interested, say no (and only the word 'no') firmly. Walk away and refuse to make eye contact. They will leave you alone.
5. If you are a woman alone, wear a ring and mention in conversation that you are married. This carries a lot of weight in Marrakech - I was travelling with a girlfriend and it was amazing how fast shopkeepers back off when you casually say 'my husband wouldn't approve of that!'

“Fun to haggle”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 14, 2012

As long as you can take it in your stride enjoy the haggling, but don't get too upset with the constant harassment from the shopkeepers to buy their wares

“Keep out! Its not worth it.”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed October 14, 2012

I got the impression that they really didn't like tourists! I don't know if it was desperation because of effects of the global economy or whether they are just greedy and inhospitable. Somewhere between the two I suspect.

If you take their photo, they'll want paid or become angry, or even both. If you ask them nicely for their permission to take a photo, even in French and Arabic, like I did, they become angry or want paid.

If you want souvenirs, gifts or some of the local wares, go to the Ensemble Artisan or another artisan co-operative. They are genuine and lovely people. There's also good number in the new town that are worth visiting.

“Great experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 12, 2012

Stallholderswere all friendly respectful and sharp businessmen. Great fun bartering and something for everyone. we were warned about pickpocketsbut didnt experience this , The only slightly annoying aspect is the incistence of snake charmers or monkey owners wanting you to have a photo with them and want paying even if you only look. Eating in the square was fun too.

“Overwhelming”

Sounds, colors, smells, shapes... everything gets mixed in the Souks of Marrakech. From slippers to lamps to cotton shirts to pastries. You must get lost there in order to experience the real soul of Marrakech.
