“Must see to get a more comprehensive idea of Marrakech”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 12, 2014

The new Marrakech is a modern city with wide avenues and European stores and cafes. After visiting the medina, it is a nice contrast, and it will give you a more comprehensive view of the city. Dedicate just an hour or two, drink coffee and taste some wonderful cakes at Patisserie Amandanine, nothing special, but still important to visit.

“A city centre....wow”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed February 8, 2014

Gueliz is what it is. The modern (ish) centre of Marrakech. There are the ubiquitous Western shops including McDonalds, but quite frankly there are better city centres in Europe and Gueliz offers very little. Some good restaurants including Al Fassia and the Italian Catanzano..one of the more cheaper places that has a licence to serve alcohol. The traffic is crazy especially around Place 16 de Novembre and around Mohammed V and VI. It does give some respite from the hustle and bustle of the Medina, but it replaces it with traffic, noise and pollution. No need to spend more than a morning here at most and get a taxi.

“Not great from a tourist point of view. Just your run of the mill city”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed February 7, 2014

This is the modern French part of the city and to be honest there's nothing of any interest here bar the shopping. It's a shame because this area is the place where they could have more 21st century styled fun tourist attractions like a Marrakech Dungeon for example.

“Appaling cruelty to donkeys”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed January 30, 2014

I visited the Gueliz area and had intended to do some shopping and visit a very good pizzeria near rue de la libertee. What i saw was most upsetting - rampant conjunctivitis in donkeys and badly beaten donkeys going to and from the area, exhausted, treated like machines, and this wasn't even a particularly hot day. The new builds are being supported by these creatures who suffer abysmally, for example next to the cement trailers at the new building sites for long long days.
The whole experience is one of sadness and although there are highlights in this area ( Majorelle gardens, some shops selling artisanal goods) i would urge caution, or else more proactivity (contact SPANA, the local charity for animals) or even the tourist board to help conquer this horrible abuse.

“Not much to see. Supratours and train are here.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed December 27, 2013

This is the newer part of town and there isn't much to see in terms of sightseeing. You can try Patisserie amandine (check my reviews) and Al-Fassia (we couldn't go because it was booked solid). The buses by supratours leave from next to the train station. You can take a few buses that connect the new town with Jemma El-Fna.
