“Back in time”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 24, 2015 NEW

The cultural experience that you must see, specially at sunset. You get to experience music, food and all sort of commerce on this big open square. Hard to describe so you better live it.

“Unable to see this square in a positive way due to the distressing sight of monkeys dragged about on chains.”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed April 23, 2015 NEW

We were staying in a Riad fairly close to this square so walked through it several times during our stay. Although it was worth seeing as a totally full on sensory experience (interesting smelling food, noise of drums, hundreds of people trying to make a living from having their photo taken, selling bangles, henna tattoos etc), I didn’t like it. Although everybody sees things from their own perspective and I realise that I shouldn't judge their method of making a living, I found seeing distressed looking monkey’s pulled around on the end of chains, and snakes being exploited very upsetting, so not feeling I was in a position to challenge (although I thought about it), spent most of the time trying to avoid seeing them (& avoid being run over by the bikes & cars passing so close as although the locals seem to have excellent spacial awareness, I don't!).
Having said that, it isn’t to be missed as it’s a huge part of the Marrakech ‘adventure’. Wanting to see what it was like at night, we found one of the rooftop café’s and after a while, got a table where we could see over the square and for me was a better way of absorbing what was going on but with a bit of space. A word of warning ‘though, we were told that the henna used in the square has a derivative than can cause skin to react. Also, the nice ladies coming up and ‘giving’ you a bracelet want something in return, so don’t put one on unless you intend to buy one, which seems fair. Also worth remembering if you are going to take photos of the men in their twirly hats and other sights, then have some cash ready as for many this is their way of making a living.

“Famous Square”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 23, 2015 NEW

Full of charm and bustling energy. One of the top tourist spots in Marrakech and well worth a prolonged visit. The fresh orange juice sold in the Square is really thirst quenching.
