“fantastic rooms, shame about the service”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 25, 2007

Well, it was like walking into paradise after walking through the streets to get there. The hotel is conveniently located about 15-20 minutes walking from Jemma el Fna. But walking there and back can be quite stressful for some people as cars and bikes whiz pass on the narrow and bustling streets.

Once inside it feels very grand. We got offered a drink while we sat and filled in our hotel cards. We were shown to our room, which was very nice indeed. Nice comfortable, large bed. Beautiful tiles on the floor and walls. Windows overlooking the courtyard and swimming pool. Swimming pool was clean but not nearly enough chairs around the pool for the amount of people using it.

The staff seemed to be trying a bit too hard to please and were always in our face. It just seemed they were being forced to do something they didn't really want to do. I asked myself on various occasions "what happened to a service with a smile?" They didn't help create a relaxing atmosphere, which is what I would expect from a hotel at this price.

So overall a very pleasant experience but could have been better.

“Would return”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 17, 2007

I've stayed in countless hotels; this was certainly the nicest! The service wasn't perfect, the facilities weren't the best of the best, but such things didn't matter. The place is beautifully decorated and absolutely charming. It's an oasis of sanity and serenity away from the madness that is the medina.

We were lucky: we had a free room upgrade, presumably due to them running out of space. Ours was a 'superior' room, with a small lounge area and a private balcony overlooking a part of the downstairs. The room was very tastefully decorated and the cleaners seemed to visit more than once a day. The bed was huge and very comfortable.

The staff were all very friendly and keen to help. They all spoke enough English for us to be able to converse with them when our rudimentary French reached its limits. If you have a basic grasp of French ('O' level) then you'll do fine in Marrakech, at least with shopping and eating.

The food in the hotel was superb. Proper vertical food. It was priced appropriately - a three course meal for two with a bottle of wine costing around £50. By contrast, a decent meal (tagine and juice) at a restaurant in the main square might cost £8 (for two people).

The restaurant/bar have a decent selection of foreign and Moroccan wines. The Moroccan wines are quite cheap by hotel standards - about £9 for the Sémillant, which was fruity and very drinkable. The foreign wines were at more usual prices.

Breakfast was pretty much like you'd find in any decent hotel. There was bread for toasting, pastries, scrambled egg, bacon(!), hot tomatoes, sausages, dried and fresh fruit, yoghurts, cheeses, those weird spongy pancakes, fruit juices, plus a woman with a frying pan who would make you an omelette or fried egg to order.

The pool area was relaxed and the pool itself was clean and warm enough at about 11am (bravery required to enter but fine once you're in). Unlike some hotels I've been to, you're allowed drinks by the pool. Drinks from the bar always seem to come with nuts and/or olives.

We'd love to go back to this hotel.

“Lovely hotel”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 7, 2007

This is a lovely hotel, but if you're in Marrakech a riad is probably a more interesting option. However, if a heated pool, spa, mini-bar, room service, restaurant etc is important, then this is good. We were happy overall but they kept getting our room service breakfast wrong, in spite of it being £15/person! Hence the lower rating...

  • Liked — Heated pool
  • Disliked — Location - I would prefer to stay inside the medina.

“Relaxing and beautiful!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 9, 2006

We spent a fantastic 5 nights at Les Jardins de la Medina in early November. About a 15 minute walk from the square, Les Jardins has spacious rooms, helpful staff and great food. Each of the six people in our group enjoyed visits to the hotel's hammam and spa. We never wanted to leave!

“one of the lovliest hotel experiences ever!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 6, 2006

after reading so many bad reviews of this riad, it was with great trepidation that we checked in. We found a hotel with great beauty and personality. The staff was always politle and helpful. Breakfast was substanial, and the one night that we ate dinner at the hotel was memorable not only for the incredible beauty of the courtyard setting, but the excellent quality of the food. The spa service was delightful and not too expensive. Everyone we met who was a guest the week we stayed seemed to be enjoying their stay just as much as we. This is a great place to stay. We recommend it highly
