“Starstruck”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 5, 2007

This is a modern hotel just a 2minute walk from the Djem al fna and as such is ideally located for the main attractions (and handy should you need to nip back to your room promptly!)
We found the reception staff to be friendly, fluent in several languages and even negotiated a discount price with a free upgrade to a suite. The suite had a large bathroom (the bath was great), huge bed (very, very hard) sitting room, two plasma screens (though rubbish TV) and a generous balcony overlooking a verdant courtyard; quite a contrast to life on the other side of the hotel wall.
The suite was situated in the new extension but bizzarely it took three seprate lifts to reach it.
The reception area is the older part of the hotel and it opens out on to courtyard with fairly large pool and sun loungers. The piano bar is close by and is the ideal accompaniment to a very civilised poolside G&T.
We did not try the food as the menu looked unpromising and there was plenty of good dining to be had in Marrakech anyway.
The clientel were as expected, largely european, well heeled and generally middle aged or older though there were one or two younger families.
This hotel is a great sanctuary from the hussle and bustle, the heat, the smell and so on but doesn't feel at all Moroccan - like many such hotels, it could be anywhere.
On the whole I enjoyed my stay here (3 nights) because it was comfortable BUT... the over-riding impression was that this was not a 5 star hotel. I wonder whose star ratings we're talking about. There were minor issues such as dud light bulbs, plaster smears not cleaned off bathroom tiles and my pet hate - the room maid knocking you up at 9.15am and actually coming into the room (happened twice) whilst I'm not suitably attired to receive guests!!! The bill also contained an entry for the minibar which we had not used. These minor points could be so easily rectified but personally I would rate the hotel as 4 star.

  • Liked — Spaciousness and not just a shower but a large hot bath which was surprisingly welcome.
  • Disliked — Hard bed, hard pillows - ached in the morning.
